I was thinking of pull-down menus too but only as an alternate selected = way because they would have to use Javascript. The rule here is ALL = HTML, CSS and PHP but possibly the odd Javascript as an option where it = makes sense. In this case it makes sense. The Javascript must be = tested and word in all the main browsers at the very least. That's good about the icons being able to be different colors. Dear Phil and All, > Sorry its taken me a few days to comment on your design work. It is fine :) > This design looks great! Thank you! > What is the intention with the GO TO selection box? I noticed that Menu in the top right side (in the stable version, not CVS) stays the same all the time. So I thought about putting it on a pull down so it gets less space in the interface. > One point - design seems to have adopted the old horizontal format. > Steve's new design that I recently committed to the CVS is more vertical > than the old horizontal way - you may want to have a look at this - I > like the fact that we can get more links visible on the page with his > way. It makes good use of the whole screen - even works at 600x800. Well, I did not see the CVS version yet... Please point me the way to get there. Some point I can share in my experience is that the interface must attend to 2 types of user: the new user and the everyday user. The new user needs to easily get along with the interface. The everyday user needs the interface to work as fast as possible as well as efficient as possible to them. I saw the webERP as far as Interface and Navigation in the stable version as follows: - Modules (payables, receivables, etc) - In Module Navigation (that is the main menu link and others) - these stay as the same in all modules - Options for each modules (those are unique for each module) > I have had lectures from Steve about how the visual appeal is important > for marketing purposes and getting initial buy in from potential users > .... and since everyone will have different view on what looks good I > really like the themes idea. We could even make this different for different users quite > easily. I agree with Steve. Desing today is as important as functionality... You do not wish to buy a Mercedes or a BMW or that wonderful Sport car because you can drive you faster to work... It is because it appeals to you. You like it. The same way with an application: you need to like its looks so you have the will to become more acquainted to it... > This may sound like me pouring cold water over your idea and I > desperately don't want to put you off contributing. Its not that your > design is not great... it is. However, I must say that I not keen to > re-invent the core GUI every couple of months. No it is fine... The whole idea of copying in some way the stable interface was that we had to only change the header and footer files... It is not in my concept having to redo any development in this way, only, of course, if we decide so. Please put the stable interface side to side with this one I did and you notice that they are the same, just with the positions changed. It will work as a new theme to your stable version. > Thats not to say that if we can extend the themes concept to allow a few > more bells and whistles ... then lets do it! > Perhaps we should get stuck into the multi-language stuff first then > revisit the GUI after that. Hi Rom, Well I can tell you what I've figured out so far about cvs. Others can = tell you more I'm sure. If you are using Windows then this will be more = helpful and if not then maybe someone else can fill in the Linux blanks. = Also, Phil has a link to the SourceForge cvs explanation although it's = more convoluted and less practical than what I'll explain here. =20 WinCVS seems to be the best so find it, download it and install it. = They have a link to it from SourceForge. Now you are about half way = there. Go into WinCVS and click on Admin > Login. Click on the General = tab. Fill in the following pserver /cvsroot/web-erp cvs.sf.net anonymous ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/web-erp I went to the Globals tab and checked Checkout read-only as well. Don't = honestly know if it's needed though. Next, click on Remote > Checkout module. Type in web-erp in the top = area then select a local folder where it will be downloaded. Click OK = and it should download the newest cvs version to the local folder. Voila! There are ways of updating your cvs, etc. but I have been keeping it = simple. I rename my local folder and then download a new copy. I then = use my awesome compare tool to see what has changed and to move my = changes in from another copy I work with. Hope this helps. I really don't know why the SourceForge instructions = have to be so impractical. They are enough to scare anyone off for = good, I swear. Anyway, that should get you started and you can go from = there. Some others may be able to add some helpful hints. The idea is to know what files, tables and graphics you have changed and = to give them to Phil. He will look it over and put what he decides into = the cvs. Phil makes good decisions, except the one I don't agree with = him about...hahaha...just kidding. After Phil moves the changes into the cvs it is good to download it and = test to make sure whatever you did that he incorporated works correctly. = Steve =20 ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Rom Pereira=20 To: web...@li...=20 Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2004 10:57 PM Subject: RE: [Web-erp-developers] New Look Hello Steve and All, =20 =D8 I'm thinking that possibly you're working from the old = interface. Well, I believe that "complaining" comes with the wife definition. But I do what I can to help her and in the end, she understands that I need some time alone with my thinking and my notebook. I cannot complain about her complaining (that sounded nice :-)) because it helped me to become a better person in a lot of different ways. But sometimes it is a pain. life is wonderful and my family makes it easier by far to live it. Dear Steve and All, > Hey, Phil, not true. Just a different skill set. A skill set more similar to mine than yours. Except I don't have XML, Flash or Delphi experience. I have some other experience though ;) Each one have their own skills. I developed mine as needed. Computers are a passion of mine and today, although I use computers as a secondary part in my profession (I am a International Sales Manager) they are still a big deal in my life. I usually use those to help the companies to develop their computer side and to improve the Company's efficiency. * I can tell by the Borland C note that you are from my days, Rom! Was Borland the best by far or what?!! I started in the computers at the age of 11, when I got my first commodore and a MSX. then I went to the Amiga and then at the same time to PCs. I started programming basic and logo in the MSX. I got my first job programming Borland C developing PDA like devices to the police of my country (I was 17 in that time). Then I become passionate with Borland C and DOS. Borland C is extremely powerful and I still recompile some of my old stuff just for fun using Dos Box and FreeDOS some times. I am no computer genius but I can make it work :D and the best of all: I have fun doing it. As it is for me know a lot of fun doing this project with you guys. As soon as we are done with the translation I will try to spread this all around. Here in the company we just adopted (unfortunately we are still using windows) OpenOffice.org and we are very satisfied with the results. As far as I know the future looks brighter and I will do everything I can so efforts like this will grow and grow and software like Web-ERP will become an everyday need. I am not the best php programmer, but I can do some coding and I am sure that I will learn a lot here. I am always open to learn more and I am not afraid of fixing mistakes of mine. Something I am good at is producing GUIs that are small in size and have harmony and are pleasant to look at. I try to keep it simple, as portable as I can and stable. Hello Steve and All, * I'm thinking that possibly you're working from the old interface. Have you downloaded the most recent cvs? By the way, if you haven't, they seem to be having trouble with it for the last week. You'll either have to wait or * maybe Phil has a copy that he could send. Yes, I did this based on the download version of webERP. I did not join the CVS efforts yet. Where should I start? * The graphics are very good. The font on the menu is too small as it displays on mine. Do you mean to have the Selects in that Go To drop-down? Yes, it is quite small. I am still doing some work on it since there are 2 concerns in that part: 1) the description of the icons and 2) the translation of it. I was thinking in maybe making the Modules Navigation a pull down menu. I don't know. All inputs are welcome :D. > Personally I'd like to drop the plus sign at the end of webERP as I think any punctuation makes it difficult for people to catch onto and readily communicate. I believe a name that is represented the same everywhere and without > anything that hinders remembering it quickly and long term means it spreads quicker. Especially in web searches, etc. However, that's Phil's call. I just copy the actual way you write down the logo. As you said it is Phil's call. I just did a little redesign since "web" and "erp" are two different word and in languages like mine (Brazilian Portuguese) it sounds like one word. So it would be important, in my point of view (I can be wrong), to show that it is 2 words. I agree about the identity thing. One cannot change its name otherwise it looses it identity. > I find these days that several of the erp vendors have gone with pastel (calmer) shades as a color scheme. In fact earth tones seem to be the "norm". Accpac has varying shades of soft browns, blues (some harder)and greys > including their icons. Great Plains uses soft to medium blues, greys, browns and soft, sort of grey/green. Navision is soft blues and browns. Possibly others may disagree. Is it possible to reshade the graphics into a pastel > color scheme? I just copy and paste the icons in the interface. The green and orange makes it more commercial now-a-days, but I do agree with you that the pastels are more neutral and it is hard that people hates it. Who does not like pastels can easily ignore it. But my idea is the following: with CSS it is easy to change the main interface colors and we can do (as soon as we decide to use the Everaldo icons and the he sends to me the vector version of his icons so we can change the coloring on them) different versions of the icons for the different themes. So we can have 10 different versions of the coloring of the icons and much more combinations of the CSS schemes. The interface is good for 800x600, but it is possible to do a "slim" version that will fit in smaller screen widths. Please let me know your input, Best Regards, Rom Perei |

Dear all, I agree with Phil: "I really like the themes idea. That is why it would be nice when people can choose their own theme. May be is this a usefull link: http://ergo.human.cornell.edu/ahtutorials/interface.html ----- Original Message ----- From: "Phil Daintree" <p.d...@pa...> To: <web...@li...> Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2004 2:29 PM Subject: Re: [Web-erp-developers] design idea Rom, Sorry its taken me a few days to comment on your design work. This design looks great! What is the intention with the GO TO selection box? One point - design seems to have adopted the old horizontal format. Steve's new design that I recently committed to the CVS is more vertical than the old horizontal way - you may want to have a look at this - I like the fact that we can get more links visible on the page with his way. It makes good use of the whole screen - even works at 600x800. I have had lectures from Steve about how the visual appeal is important for marketing purposes and getting initial buy in from potential users .... and since everyone will have different view on what looks good I really like the themes idea. This involves a new directory under the css directory all you need to do is tell config.php the name of the new directory (theme) under the css directory and the whole system changes its look! We could even make this different for different users quite easily. This may sound like me pouring cold water over your idea and I desperately don't want to put you off contributing. Its not that your design is not great... it is. However, I must say that I not keen to re-invent the core GUI every couple of months. Re-working old scripts always gives me the nasty negative feeling of "if only I'd done it this way in the first place I wouldn't be wasting time doing it again" - GUI re-invention seems like a never ending circle and I prefer to focus on pushing out the accounting functionality. Thats not to say that if we can extend the themes concept to allow a few more bells and whistles ... then lets do it! Perhaps we should get stuck into the multi-language stuff first then revisit the GUI after that. All, I definitely would like to have a translation to Dutch, but I do not know yet in which year I have some time left to do this. After the translation of Dutch is done, then I might be able to help with French too but I need then some help of my friends and/or my wife. First priority is to be sure that webERP meets all functional requirements that we need in The Netherlands. I think you are doing an excellent job with designing the architecture for translations. It might be an option to integrate the database solution with gettext solution with .po files by entering the translations in the database and create a report which creates the .po files. You can then create separate column for the shortcut and generate the right string inclusive html to the .po file. This opens also the possibility to replace the .po file by a database interface. It's probably a better userfriendly interface for end users to be able to alter translations in the database. I would like to thank you all for the support and joining the project and adding your contributions. Last year there was only Phil. I was looking for accounting software and joined this project because the basic concepts (no overhead, very clean, runs almost everywhere through basic php and mysql), lots of functionality and last but not least: Phil's energy ant time to get it all done. Now there is interests from all over the world! :) With best regards, Dick Stins ----- Original Message ----- From: "Phil Daintree" <p.d...@pa...> To: <web...@li...> Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2004 11:39 PM Subject: [Web-erp-developers] Translation > Rom, Luca and the team, > > Luca, I hope you can forgive me in trying this gettext approach - I know > you were keen on the db method - which I relaise definitely has some > advantages. > > I have started down the track of the gettext method of translating > webERP, it does seem to have a minimal impact on readability ... I think InfoCentral (in SourceForge) checks whether gettext is installed and deals with it accordingly. Hi Phil, One note, you don't really need gettext to be compiled with php (if it is great then use it because of the speed improvements) but if not there are simple php based gettext implementations. I thought someone had already posted a function that checked for that and acted accordingly. Although gettext is pre-compiled at most ISPs it does not come with the default php installers which is probably what people will be using when they first download weberp for evaluation. Hani |
