Sounds great! I can probably contribute a Danish translation in a few months. French once we get a demand for it since we will probably have to pay to get it done. No, I'm not Danish but a partner is and we have connections there. There are some very good translation programs out there that cover many languages. However, they don't do a perfect job so someone who knows the language needs to look it over by comparing the English and translated strings. Hopefully those translation programs can handle a po file, otherwise it would have to be converted to a format they handle and then reassembled into a po. May I suggest we each take on a few scripts at a time. Once we're done them then we can all do a few more, etc. In this way someone will not be modifying a huge number of scripts for an extended time and it's more inspirational when each chunk gets completed quickly. We could possibly do by module or alphabet. Might want to make a language field in the user, company and customer tables. Let me know which files I'm doing... Rom, yes this would be particularly good. I think it would be possible to create a script that periodically updates the main .po file of the strings requiring translation. I also think it would be possible for a web-site to allow a translato= r to select the language and the appropriate .po file could be parsed= =20 into a web page with the strings translated available for modification. That would then write the new translations back to an amended .po file. I think you will see the possibilities when you see the automatically created .po file of strings and referred to as msgi= d and the translations referred to as msgstr. I dont think this would be too much of a mission either! [Massively off topic ... Had a look at your web-site. ( 2004-08-20 10:03:14 - Project CVS Service ) pserver-based CVS access and ViewCVS access to repositories for projects starting with a, c, d, g, u, w, and x has been restored as of 2004-08-20. This completes our resolution of the 2004-08-12 hardware failure that impacted this service. No data has been lost in this hardware outage; data has been reloaded to this host from the developer CVS server. Developer CVS service access, and non-developer CVS services for all other project letters, was not impacted by this outage. |

Rom, Luca and the team, Luca, I hope you can forgive me in trying this gettext approach - I know you were keen on the db method - which I relaise definitely has some advantages. I have started down the track of the gettext method of translating webERP, it does seem to have a minimal impact on readability ... I think? Take a look at the code and see what you think -comments appreciated. It is also very easy to modify the existing scripts. All strings are just encapsulated in a call to the function _() _("Some string") there is a utility xgettext that extracts all the strings that are encapsulated in this way to a .po file which is the core translation file which has a msgid being the original text of the string and a msgstr being the translation of that string into the alternative language. In some strings there are bits of html mark up - which will have to be retained where possible eg. on the links to Main Menu - the string is "<u>M</u>ain Menu" indicating that the letter M is the shortcut using CTRL+M (followed by enter in IE) is the same as clicking the link. This may not be quite so useful in other languages. If Rom could edit this file to make the appropriate translation for Brazillian Portugese that would enable me to prove the concept. Luca may also like to have a go at the Italian. Has it been 2 weeks yet - are you back Luca? The only downer is that there are at least another 160 scripts to go!! I am hoping there will be support from Rom (Brazillian/Portugese), Luca (Italian), Steve (French speaking Canadians?) not sure if Dick is interested in a Dutch version, not sure if Danie is interest in Africans (sp??) and me If we can divide the scripts up we could crack this quite quickly. However, the translation on its own will be a significant project and for that we can only rely on you clever bi-lingual folk. It does seem particularly great to have all the strings extracted nicely from the scripts using this xgettext function. If the same string (exactly the same) occurs more than once in the .po file you can delete the related msgid and msgstr of the subsequent occurrences since they will not be needed. I have attached the translation .po file as it stands (just for the index.php, header.inc and session.inc) and a copy of index.php as amended so you can see the minimal modifications required. The actual additional translation code I have put in session.inc as this is included in every script. The only other issue is that gettext must be compiled in to PHP or the gettext.dll option in php.ini under windows is uncommented. If gettext is not compiled in or the module activated then the system defaults to the original english string. One beauty of the approach is that the system cannot be broken this way since even if gettext isnt installed I have a default function that just returns the english string. This is one aspect that I really like because if I am left holding the baby - at least the system isn't trashed and I can just mark the whole multi-language thing off to experience. Men, with your support I think this will work! I think this is the minimal hassle route to multi-language webERP. If the concept proves ok then all that needs to be done is: 1. split up the scripts between us 2. encapsulate every string in _("????") 3. send them back to me 4. I create one large .po file 5. Send back to the translation team Rom, Luca, Dick? for translation 6. Send me back the translated .po files 7. I create the binary .pot files using the gettext utilities et voila! (the extent of my French!) Brazillian/Portugese, Italian, Dutch?, Africans? webERP! We could easily make an additional field for language in the user table to allow the users to all have different languages. In terms of ongoing maintenance the xgettext utlity allows only new strings not already in the main messages.po file to be extracted too so all the leg work is removed - each time a script is changed the small additional .po file is circulated to the translators and fired back into the main messages.po file for creating the new .pot binary. All thoughts and comments always appreciated. Phil |

Rom, Sorry its taken me a few days to comment on your design work. This design looks great! What is the intention with the GO TO selection box? One point - design seems to have adopted the old horizontal format. Steve's new design that I recently committed to the CVS is more verti= cal than the old horizontal way - you may want to have a look at this - I like the fact that we can get more links visible on the page with his way. It makes good use of the whole screen - even works at 600x800. I have had lectures from Steve about how the visual appeal is importa= nt for marketing purposes and getting initial buy in from potential user= s =2E... and since everyone will have different view on what looks good= I really like the themes idea. This involves a new directory under the = css directory all you need to do is tell config.php the name of the new directory (theme) under the css directory and the whole system change= s its look! We could even make this different for different users quite easily. This may sound like me pouring cold water over your idea and I desperately don't want to put you off contributing. Its not that your design is not great... it is. However, I must say that I not keen to re-invent the core GUI every couple of months. Re-working old scripts always gives me the nasty negative feeling of "if only I'd done it th= is way in the first place I wouldn't be wasting time doing it again" - G= UI re-invention seems like a never ending circle and I prefer to focus o= n pushing out the accounting functionality. Thats not to say that if we can extend the themes concept to allow a = few more bells and whistles ... then lets do it! Perhaps we should get stuck into the multi-language stuff first then revisit the GUI after that. Hi Rom, I'm thinking that possibly you're working from the old interface. Have = you downloaded the most recent cvs? By the way, if you haven't, they = seem to be having trouble with it for the last week. You'll either have = to wait or maybe Phil has a copy that he could send. The graphics are very good. Do you mean to have the Selects in that Go To = drop-down? =20 Personally I'd like to drop the plus sign at the end of webERP as I = think any punctuation makes it difficult for people to catch onto and = readily communicate. I believe a name that is represented the same = everywhere and without anything that hinders remembering it quickly and = long term means it spreads quicker. Especially in web searches, etc. = However, that's Phil's call. =20 I find these days that several of the erp vendors have gone with pastel = (calmer) shades as a color scheme. In fact earth tones seem to be the = "norm". Accpac has varying shades of soft browns, blues (some = harder)and greys including their icons. Great Plains uses soft to = medium blues, greys, browns and soft, sort of grey/green. Navision is = soft blues and browns. Possibly others may disagree. Is it possible to = reshade the graphics into a pastel color scheme? Hello Phill and All, > Sounds good Rom - also seems you know how mad I am on efficiency/throughput/badwidth use. Some people love to make you wait. I do not mind waiting for some flash to load, but I hate web sites that they make you wait, because the menu or some main navigation is tightened to the huge graphics that are loading or some java application. There is a need to ally wonderful looks to efficiency and speed in the GUIs. > The recent facelift from Steve looks pretty good to me, but everyone likes different things I guess. > Have you got in mind a new theme ? Yeap. Let me get acquainted to the Web-ERP structure and I will propose something. My brother happens to be a good designer (an example: = http://www.1800sailaway.com - he did the graphics and animations and I = coded it) and I was explaining to him about this project and he offered = to help if we desired so. Also a friend of his, Everaldo that is the = designer of the icons of KDE (http://www.everaldo.com), once told me if = I needed some Icons that he would do for me. So, what do you think about = doing some modifications to the appearance without loading it up with = images? I am also a freak about loading time, so it would be a very = light makeup J =20 Please let me know, =20 Best regards, =20 Rom Pereira |
