Also, RPM packages for RHEL Linux (and compatible OSes) are now available as well! (Thanks once more to Shin-ichi for both of these.) Happy new year everyone; I hope you're staying safe out there. This is just a brief note to let you all know that a new version of Tux Paint has been released! So far, it's been made available for: * Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10; both 64-bit and 32-bit (installer EXE only, so far) * Windows XP and 2000 (installer EXE only, so far) * Apple Macintosh; OS X Yosemite (10.10) through macOS Big Sur (11) * Android (version 5 Lollipop & later) * Haiku; both 64-bit and 32-bit * and of course as source-code (.tar.gz) Many thanks to Mark K. Kim, Pere Pujal i Carabantes, Shin-ichi TOYAMA, and Luc 'Begasus' Schrijvers for these ports. Shin-ichi says he'll produce some RHEL Linux packages soon, as well. Visit the download page of the Tux Paint website to find what you need: http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/ This new version includes many minor changes, as well as these noteworthy ones: * export drawings "out of Tux Paint" (from the Open dialog; e.g. on a desktop/laptop OS, they'll be copied into your personal "Pictures" folder) * export animated GIFs (from the Open->Slideshow dialog), great for sharing silly animations on social media * Shapes tool offers the ability to expand shapes from the corner, rather than the center * improved Eraser tool (including finer eraser sizes) * larger on-screen keyboard (accessibility feature of the Text and Label tools) on high-resolution screens You can read my press release about it here: http://www.tuxpaint.org/latest/tuxpaint-0.9.25-press-release-en.php PS - I've also come up with a "Privacy Policy" regarding the Tux Paint website (www.tuxpaint.org) and the application itself, and have posted it here: http://www.tuxpaint.org/privacy/ Feedback is welcome! -- -bill! A new build of Tux Paint 0.9.24, originally released back in May, is now available for macOS. The previous version worked on macOS 10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, 10.14 Mojave, and 10.15 Catalina. Now that macOS 11 Big Sur is out, we've received a handful of reports of Tux Paint 0.9.24 not working properly (it runs, but no image is displayed). Mark Kim of the Tux Paint project spent some time digging into this and has produced new builds of Tux Paint and Tux Paint Config. which not only work on Big Sur, but also on a few earlier versions: OS X 10.10 Yosemite, and 10.11 El Capitan. If you're running Big Sur and had problems -- or if you're still running Yosemite or El Capitan and want to try out the new Tux Paint -- you may download them here: http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/macosx/ In case you missed it, we also have a page that lists all of the previous major releases of Tux Paint, and the various versions of Mac OS X / OS X / macOS that they run on, along with download links, too! (http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/macosx/older/) If you come across any problems, let us know ASAP! Many thanks to the folks who reported the issues, and to Mark for all he had to endure to get Big Sur installed and Tux Paint up and running on it! -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

Hi, it is mirrored at ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/android/0.9.25/ Please test and report any issue, Thanks :) A thing that I am working right now is the _locales_ list of the config tool for the Android version in order to convert it to a more understandable by regular humans _languages_ list. Shin-Ichi here in the Tux Paint project has been working on native 64-bit Windows builds of Tux Paint, and was kind enough to go back and re-build the most recent release (0.9.24, from this past May) for 64-bit Windows. Most modern PCs and laptops will have a 64-bit CPU, so most everyone will be able to take advantage of this new build of Tux Paint. Please download it and try it out, and let us know ASAP if you notice any problems! Shin-Ichi has been kind enough to build Tux Paint 0.9.25 beta builds for Windows and RPM-based Linux! I've mirrored copies of them onto my FTP server, and you can fetch them from there. Please take it for a test drive, and report back any issues that you come across! (Shin-ichi built them right around the same time as when I mended the issues with the shapes tool refresh and rotation, but I'm guessing they were built afterwards.) Windows (10, 8, 7, Vista, 2000, XP) ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/win32/0.9.25-pre/2020-08-30/ Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 (x86-64) 64-bit versions of RHEL 8 and compatible distributions (such as CentOS). They might work on other 64-bit RPM-based distributions such as Fedora Linux. ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/rpm/0.9.25-pre/2020-08-30/el8.x86_64/ (includes some SDL libraries) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 (x86-64) 64-bit versions of RHEL 7 and compatible distributions (such as CentOS). They might work on other 64-bit RPM-based distributions such as Fedora Linux. ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/rpm/0.9.25-pre/2020-08-30/el7.x86_64/ Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (x86-64) 64-bit versions of RHEL 6.x and compatible distributions (such as CentOS). They might work on other 64-bit RPM-based distributions such as Fedora Linux. ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/rpm/0.9.25-pre/2020-08-30/el6.x86_64/ Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (i686) 32-bit versions of RHEL 6.x and compatible distributions (such as CentOS). They might work on other 32-bit RPM-based distributions such as Fedora Linux. ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/rpm/0.9.25-pre/2020-08-30/el6.i686/ Thanks & enjoy! -- -bill! (I think it would be good to add to the "EXTENDING" documentation, like we do for Input Methods.) I'll see what I can I do about that, soon. This could allow constructing a keyboard that has a more suitable layout for eye-tracking or tapping purposes. (And if anyone does so, and they might be useful for others, we can consider adding them to Tux Paint itself.) > As for the other two problems: thank you for pointing out the > documentation. Tux Paint has a "savedir" option that can be supplied via the configuration file, or on the command-line (i.e., in the application launcher shortcut in Windows). See the "OPTIONS" documentation for all of the various things you can ask Tux Paint to do. I've tried to make sure LOTS of things are configurable. (Including simplification options and options to disabling new features, as we add any that I feel might be a bit too confusing for younger users.) > Thanks for all your help! Happy to help! -bill! |

Hi, Thank you both for your active engagement with our tuxpaint issues! We have both problems, actually. But resizing the targets would be a good start. I mean, those keys are too small even for my fingers when I use the tablet in touch mode (and I have decently slender fingers)! We'll try to memorize the keyboard key locations if we cannot see them until you find a different option... haha As for the other two problems: thank you for pointing out the documentation. I was able to work through the "starters." Of course the school district created horrible permissions for all those tux paint subfolders and it took me a while to circumvent that (when the school owns the tablets, they tend to lock students out of pretty much everything other than the downloads folder). On windows 10 there is something a little like a unix softlink, so I had to change 'starters' to soft-link point to another folder for which I did have permissions. But this seems like it's tenuous and the next time we update tux paint it is likely to break. I know in the configurations one is able to change the folder in which the artwork is saved. Is it also possible to point 'starters' to a different folder? Thanks for all your help! Hi Bill, Nice, Thanks :) These days I am currently too tired after day work to do something useful. I've take a look at the code and noticed a partial workaround that could be helpful for the current 0.9.23 version: scaling up the 5 btnsm_***.png images should render the onscreen kerboard bigger, however the font size will not be altered by this change. So if the problem is to identify the letters this will not prove useful, instead if the problem is precision of the eye tracker to point to a small button, then it could help. If there is enough room to fit a keyboard with larger, 48x48 buttons, on the current canvas, with the chosen layout, Tux Paint will do so. Otherwise, it will fall back to the smaller, 24x24 buttons. You can see examples here in this tweet: https://twitter.com/TuxPaintTweets/status/1298484446216089600 While I was at it, I made the font size used for the buttons slightly larger. It was 12pt before (24x24 buttons). It is now 16pt on the small keyboard, and 32bpt on the larger keyboard (48x48 buttons). I hope this proves useful! Any further improvements would probably require a bit of rewriting how things work in there. I wonder if it'd be worth supporting PDFs for Starters and Templates...? Right now, we support PNG, JPEG, SVG, and KPX (KidPix -- a wrapper around JPEG). Note that PNGs with solid white backgrounds are supported, allowing for a plain black-and-white image to be used as a starter (with the white being interpreted as 'transparent'). (Prior to 0.9.21, Starter PNGs _had_ to be "black & transparent".) > There are alternatives: > The first one that comes to my mind is "tuxpaint-import", it is a shell > script that runs on Linux and other *nixes. If you are not on Linux, you could try to run it in a Linux/Unix emulator, it's usage is described in the README.html A second alternative is to add your image to the Tux Paint's "starters" folder, either in the global Tux Paint's installation folder or in the user's saving folder and rename it to imagename-back.png . The third alternative are Templates, basically you put your image in the Tux Paint's "templates" folder, either in the global Tux Paint's installation folder or in the user's saving folder. Starters and templates appears in the "New" dialog, their thumbnail is created automatically by Tux Paint, instead images imported with tuxpaint-import appears in the Open dialog Starters are more powerful than templates in the sense that you can do more creative things with them, yet templates are more simple to setup. I suggest reading http://www.tuxpaint.org/docs/en/html/EXTENDING.html http://www.tuxpaint.org/docs/en/html/README.html > Second issue is that no matter how hard I've looked into the configuration options, > I've been unable to find a way to resize the teeny tiny keyboard that comes up > when we want to use text. This is covered too in the EXTENDING.html I pointed above, basically put your stamp in the "stamps/|category|" folder, either in the global Tux Paint installation folder or in the user's Tux Paint saving folder. Note that in the saving user's folder maybe will not exist the folders I mentioned and you may have to create them. Also is worth to note that there is documentation in case you want to improve the quality of the stamps http://www.tuxpaint.org/docs/en/html/ADVANCED-STAMPS-HOWTO.html > > Those are pretty much it for now. Hi! We're new to the user list, but have been using (and recommending) TuxPaint for a while. We use TuxPaint with an eye-tracker and all painting takes place with the eyes! It's pretty awesome and TuxPaint is pretty much the only mechanism by which we can input continuous inputs (as opposed to clicking buttons) in a 2D interface, so we like TuxPaint A LOT. That said, we have a few limitations that if you can help us get past, would make our use even better. First, we would love to import backgrounds more easily. Presently, to import a background (for example, a PNG or JPG of a worksheet for school that we want to mark up), we have to: 1) save an image in TuxPaint (let's call it 20200820_1831img.jpg) and note its location on the file system along with the thumbnail location 2) Take the worksheet image. Resize it to the TuxPaint size, and also save a separate file as a thumbnail. 3) replace that earlier TuxPaint saved file by renaming the worksheet images to 20200820_1831img.jpg and the associated thumbnail 20200820_1831Thumbnailimg.jpg 4) reopen TuxPaint and we have basically "faked" tuxpaint to open an older saved file while in fact we opened the worksheet. Let me tell you-- this is tedious to do on a regular basis for worksheets. It's hard enough to get our instructional assistant at school to get the pdf's of worksheets saved as png's and jpgs. And certainly with COVID, it's all my job now... so how can I get around this arduous process and just open background images of our choice? Second issue is that no matter how hard I've looked into the configuration options, I've been unable to find a way to resize the teeny tiny keyboard that comes up when we want to use text. I'm sure it's obvious and there, but I've not been able to locate it. Third issue is just a question about stamps and how we might be able to add stamps of our own? Those are pretty much it for now. All of these would make our lives so much easier with Tux Paint and facilitate my kiddo to do so much more school work and fun painting! Looking forward to hearing from developers or users. Thanks!! anatandaviv. |

The Tux Paint development team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Tux Paint version 0.9.24! The latest version has promoted the "Fill" tool, previously found under the "Magic" section of Tux Paint, to the main toolbar, where it's easier to find. It also includes some performance improvements during start-up and when bringing up the "New" drawing dialog. The solid background colors can also be placed at the end of that dialog, allowing emphasis of template images. Tux Paint also now makes it possible to disable stereo sound, which can benefit users with a hearing impairment, or in situations where only one speaker is available. Version 0.9.24 is currently available for Apple macOS, Android, Microsoft Windows, RedHat Linux, and as source-code. Download it now! http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/ For further information, see the press release located here: http://www.tuxpaint.org/latest/tuxpaint-0.9.24-press-release-en.php To learn how to contribute to the Tux Paint project, visit: http://www.tuxpaint.org/help/ You can also follow Tux Paint on Twitter (https://twitter.com/TuxPaintTweets) and join the Tux Paint page on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/TuxPaint/). Enjoy, take care, and stay safe everyone! -- -bill! (Lead Developer) |

A couple weeks ago, I posted source-code for what will become Tux Paint 0.9.24, and friends (Tux Paint Config. 0.0.15, and Tux Paint Stamps), so that other volunteers in the project can produce test builds for the various platforms we target: Windows, Mac, etc. Just today, I've posted some slightly updated source code, based on some changes they needed included, as well as some last-minute updates to some of the translations of Tux Paint's interface. In the meantime, though, I realize I was in announcing the fact that the test builds existed! So, for those of you out here who'd be willing to play around with them, you can find them on my FTP server, in the following locations: * Windows (XP, 2000, Vista, 7, 8, and 10) ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/win32/0.9.24-pre/ * The "installer" (setup.exe-style) version of "Tux Paint" * I haven't confirmed, but I _believe_ it also includes "Tux Paint Config." * No new "Tux Paint Stamps" (but changes since Sept. 2018 have been minor) * macOS (10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, 10.14 Mojave, and 10.15 Catalina) ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/macosx/0.9.24/ * "Tux Paint" and "Tux Paint Config." * No new "Tux Paint Stamps" (but changes since Sept. 2018 have been minor) * Android ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/android/0.9.24-rc1-20200328-20200401/ * "Tux Paint" only. No "Stamps." * After installing you need to grant storage permissions to it (at least on Android lineage 14.1) If you try them out, and notice any problems, please let us know! (You can post back to this list, 'tuxpaint-users', or you can email me directly. If it seems appropriate, you could also post a bug report at SourceForge; you'll need an account & to be logged in, though. https://sourceforge.net/p/tuxpaint/bugs/) Thanks & enjoy! Keep an eye out for other test builds (maybe), and of course the final 0.9.24 & friends release! Stay safe, too, everyone! -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

Hi, adding new starters is described in http://tuxpaint.org/docs/en/html/EXTENDING.html See both, the starters and the templates sections. If you still have problems then would be useful that you describe all the steps you did and to have a copy of the image that is causing the problem, also the versions of OS and Tux Paint you run. Note, I've made some quick tests (on linux adding a starter to my home directory) and see that once a starter's thumbnail is created it is no more updated even if the starter changes. That could lead to the behavior you described if one adds a starter, tests on tuxpaint, then modifies the starter to improve it but for whatever reason a blank image is saved in its place: the thumbnail on the New dialog will continue to show the original image but the blank starter will be loaded. A new version of Tux Paint is now available! It adds a color-picker to the color palette, and star shapes to the "Shapes" tool, and has been updated to run on latest versions of macOS (while, hopefully, still being compatible back to Mac OS X 10.7). It's currently available as RPMs for RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) and compatible platforms, Apple macOS, and recent versions of Microsoft Windows (XP, 2000, 7, 8, and 10). Also, the SDL2 port of Tux Paint, forked over on Github, has been kept in sync with the official version (which uses SDL 1.2), and based upon that, a new build for Android (with F-Droid software repository installed) has also been produced. It's also been translated to six new languages (bringing the total up to nearly 130!): Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Kabyle, Urdu, and Devanagari and Perso-Arabic variations of Kashmiri and Sindhi. You can read the full press release here (please share it!): http://tuxpaint.org/latest/tuxpaint-0.9.23-press-release-en.php And download Tux Paint (files are hosted on its SourceForge.net project) from here: http://tuxpaint.org/download/ Enjoy! Thanks as always to everyone involved in the project over the last 4 years (since the last official release), and previous 12 years (since the program's inception)! Hello Tux Paint fans! If you have an Apple Mac -- and especially if you're using a more recent version of Mac OS X / macOS (10.11 or later) and had difficulty using Tux Paint, but even if you're on an older version where Tux Paint 0.9.22 still works -- we'd like you to try out a test build of the upcoming 0.9.23 version of Tux Paint. Please let us know whether or not it works, and which version of Mac OS X or macOS you're using. Feel free to email me directly, rather than back to this mailing list, to keep the noise level low. You can find it here: ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/macosx/0.9.23/ The file is: "TuxPaint-0.9.23rc-20180627.dmg" Thanks very much in advance! -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

Also, if you changed the "save" dir, make sure your daughter's user is able to read/write into the new place. I see you say in your first mail you changed also the "data" dir, that's a different thing, you should not change it unless you place brushes, stamps, etc. in the new place.
