I decided to leave things as-is, rather than overhaul the Fill routine and potentially break things for a while, and delay a new release. :) However, it will be one of the first things I dig back into for 0.9.28. Sorry for the bad news, but thanks very much for the report. Recursion is all fun and games, until someone loses an eye... I mean... until you run out of stack space. ;) -bill! |

Hi amazing release cycle! May I know whether the flood fill issue fixed? Beta releases of what will (soon!) become Tux Paint version 0.9.27 are available for those who'd like to download them and test them out. We appreciate your bug reports! For Windows (11, 10, 8, 7, or Vista), in either as an installer ("setup.exe"-style) or a stand-alone ("portable") ZIP archive: (from today!) http://tuxpaint.org/files/testbuilds/windows/0.9.27/2021-11-19/installer/ http://tuxpaint.org/files/testbuilds/windows/0.9.27/2021-11-19/zip/ For macOS (Big Sur (11), down to OS X Yosemite (10.10)): (currently, from 10 days ago) http://www.tuxpaint.org/files/testbuilds/macos/0.9.27/2021-11-09/ For Android (version 5 or late): (currently, from 11 days ago) http://www.tuxpaint.org/files/testbuilds/android/0.9.27/2021-11-08/ For Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and compatible distros: (from today!) http://www.tuxpaint.org/files/testbuilds/rpm/0.9.27/2021-11-19/ Thanks in advance! Things to try out: * Magic tools are now grouped * New Magic tools: Lightning, Opposite, Panels, Reflection, Smooth Rainbow, and Stretch * Updated Magic tools: Halftone, TV, and (slight change) Cartoon * These Magic tools can now apply full-image effects: Blocks, Cartoon, Chalk, Emboss, and Halftone * Rotational brushes supported (any angle; different from the old 8-way "directional"), see e.g. the arrow brush * Badge/icons indicate which brushes support rotation/direction and/or animation * Lines and Shapes show the angle of the line / rotation * New Fill mode: "Brush" (freehand paint within a contained region) * Windows "Recycle Bin" used when deleting pictures (via "Open" dialog) * All config. options should now be listed in the output of "tuxpaint --help", the Unix manpage, and bash shell tab-completion * Config. options documentation (HTML & text) have been reorganized * manpage and HTML/text docs about Magic tools support localization (not much has been done yet, though) * New "Frog" starter image * Various bugfixes & build-related changes (especially Windows & macOS) And over in Tux Paint Config.: * The "Use 'All Users' Settings" checkbox (for deleting one's local config. file, so that the system-wide one is always used) has been replaced with a 3-way option that allows the local config to either: (a) ignore system-wide configurations and ONLY use the local config (b) merge the system-wide configuration with the local one (the previous default behavior), or (c) use only the system-wide one (deletes the local config file) * Uses a larger window & fonts/widgets, on modern large displays; UI layout code was heavily overhauled * Japanese translation should render much better Whew! That sure is a lot, especially for it having been less than 5 months since the last release. Thanks again, your feedback is very much appreciated! -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

I'm beginning work to remove the recursion, and implement span filling as described over at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flood_fill#Span_Filling I need to get to bed, though, so it's all #ifdef'd out at the moment... -bill! |

Hi 0.9.26 still has crash problem. I downloaded the new version and install(override existing one, the installer didn't prompt any dialog asking), and by clicking the start menu icon i see the 0.9.26 label on left buttom screen. I've tested if by default color is black, and the template image is also black, then no issue at all. If you select some other color, then fill, it still crashes. Ah, confirmed! I added a simple hack to have the flood fill stop iterating any deeper than 20,000, which is a lot. I think an even less recursion-heavy method of filling is in order. I wonder what professional apps like GIMP do. (I was able to load the SVG at 3000px wide, and even scale it up to 6000px, which exceeded the max. memory limit setting, and it was able to fill successfully. :) ) We already walk left & right, and then recurse to fill up and down one row. I made some improvements to the Fill tool in the previous version (0.9.26), when I was working on some new features that the Fill tool offers -- linear & radial gradients. (And 0.9.27 will add a freehand fill option, as well.) I recall addressing some crash behavior, when dealing with complex shapes, and I just tested with the current 'master' version from the Git source code repository (in other words, what will become version 0.9.27), and was able to easily fill the solid black of the template example you provided. So I think you should try upgrading to version 0.9.26. If that version still causes difficulty, please let us know and we'll investigate further! Thanks again, -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

Hi, This is my first post as a tuxpaint user. This project is great and my 3 years old baby loves it. But sometimes it crashes, do you encounter the same problem and I'm not sure if this is a known issue? Steps to reproduce: 1. New an image, select from built in template, like the following one(i only cropped small part of the image) 2. Select flood paint tool (i don' know exactly how to call this tool) 3. Fill to the black edge, instead of the hole. Expected result: all edges become same color, or no change. Actual result: Crash and exit without any error. Tuxpaint version: 0.9.25, Win11 10.0.22000 Build 22000 Regards, Yang |

One workaround you could currently try is, all in tuxpaint-config: Uncheck fullscreen and set the size of the window to the maximum size of your screen then set Tux Paint to grab the mouse so it stays inside the Tux Paint window and finally set the Tux Paint's button size to something bigger so you can read what is inside buttons. Thanks Pere. After i set Language to English instead of System default, I was able to launch Tux Paint. However there is some problem with Menu and window size. It doesnt display weel and menu items like Tools and Brushes are getting chopped. I later found out that this is some already known issue. Hoping to get it fixed soon as I have to work with window size of 800 * 600 or change my laptop display size to 100% which literl=ally makes my laptop font non readable. Hi Bill, In Config window, Load System fonts option was already unchecked. Also stderr.txt and stdout.txt files are both empty with 0 kb file. Please see attached screenshots. Also please note i have already tried uninstalling and installing TuxPaint again earlier to resolve this issue. Rahul responded to me off-list, so pasting it here :) ===== Thanks for your response. Regarding you queries: This is the first time I have tried installing Tux Paint on my laptop and version is 0.9.26. When i click on Tux Paint icon, nothing happens, no window appears, no error message as if I havent clicked on anything. I tried opening TuxPaint config but haven't changed anything in window which opens. Also how do i know if its Tuxpaint is trying to load System fonts and how do i disable it if its causing issue. Please advise. Thanks ===== Hi again Rahul, So in Tux Paint Config., under the "Languages" tab, see if the "Load System Fonts" option (on the right, in the section labeled "Fonts") is checked. If it is, try un-checking it, then click "Apply" at the bottom. Try launching Tux Paint again. If it was already unchecked, or changing it didn't help, it might be useful to get a copy of any errors that are being emitted by Tux Paint. In the folder where the Tux Paint EXE file is installed (e.g., ... ummm ... I'm not a Windows user, so bear with me ... "C:\Program Files (x86)\TuxPaint" I think?), look for files named "stderr.txt" and/or "stdout.txt". Feel free to paste the contents of them, or attach them to your email, in reply to this message. Is this the first time you've used Tux Paint, or did you have an older version installed previously? Did you make any configuration changes (e.g., using the Tux Paint Config. tool that comes with TUx Paint)? Does Tux Paint launch _at all?_ i.e., does a window appear, and then disappear when it crashes? Or does nothing appear at all? If Tux Paint is configured to load system fonts, you might want to try disabling it, in case there's a TrueType Font (TTF) that's causing issues. A new build of Tux Paint 0.9.26 (first released this past June) has been released for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, and 11. Tux Paint 0.9.26-5 should address a crash bug which particularly seemed to affect Windows 10, related to the uses of the Label tool and on-screen keyboard feature. You can download installer (.exe) versions for 64-bit and 32-bit systems here: http://tuxpaint.org/download/windows/ And you can download stand-alone "portable" (.zip) versions for 64- and 32-bit systems here: http://tuxpaint.org/download/windows-zip/ Please let us know ASAP if you notice any further issues with this version. Big thanks to Pere and Shin-ichi of the Tux Paint team for their work tracking down the source of the issues and addressing them. -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

Hi all, just a quick note to get you excited for the next version of Tux Paint, and to tell you about our new artwork showcase (gallery) on the website. In case you've missed any of the social media (Twitter and Facebook) posts about upcoming features, here's a rundown of what we've added so far -- they'll be part of the next release of Tux Paint (version 0.9.27): * Magic tools are now grouped into sections, which you can page through (like you can with the various groups of Stamps) * New "Lightning" magic tool -- draws a randomized bolt between two points on the picture * New "Opposite" magic tool -- like "Negative", but rather than swapping all colors, like a photographic negative, it simply swaps hues with their complementary colors * New "Panels" magic tool -- shrinks and duplicates your entire picture into repeating 2x2 tiles; useful for creating 4-panel comics (or simulating a compound eye, if you repeat it!) * Updated "Halftone" magic tool -- simulates color photos on newsprint, with cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK) colors * Updated "TV" magic tool -- simulates an image on an old cathode ray tube (CRT) television (now splits up the image's Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) components) * Fully rotational brushes are supported (by Paint and Line tools) * Small icons (badges) appear in the brush selection buttons, denoting when a brush supports rotation (or the older 8-way directional feature) and/or animation (multi-frame brushes) * Tons of documentation updates, and preparation for further improvements to the localization/translation of docs * Tux Paint Config. now appears in a larger window, with larger text and widgets (checkboxes/etc.), on high-resolution screens * Tux Paint Config.'s interface layout has also been reworked, so widgets are spaced more dynamically, and the window may be resized; helpful when some text wasn't fitting under certain translations/locales * Improvements to Tux Paint Config.'s "All Users" setting * A variety of bug fixes & translation updates Finally, ages ago, we maintained a gallery of children's artwork, submitted by their parents & guardians. It's been more-or-less 14 years (hey, the age of my eldest child!) since I've had the time and energy to maintain it. Back in those days, I posted _everything_ I received. I've sadly contiued to ignore it -- simply filing away the occasional submission I receive, in hopes for "some day" going back and updating the gallery. However, the gallery was, in the end, over-complicated. I tried to track every artist (even if we only received one picture), and listed their age (except oops, kids get older over time!) and location (people move!) It was also based on 2002-era HTML with <table>s and a ton of complicated PHP and a pseudo-database of image and artist data, maintained in some text files. And I really wanted to post _everything_ I received, even if it was a dozen sequences from a comic that a kid was drawing. Today, I've got almost 750 submissions stacked up, waiting for me to look through, but in the meantime, I'm also seeing some FANTASTIC art being made by young adults, and posted over on Twitter. I retweet them (when appropriate), and yesterday we went back through all those retweets and asked for permission to share their work right on our website. So far, everyone who responded has agreed... Therefore, I'm happy to announce a new Gallery page, showcasing some of the coolest art I've stumbled upon in the last year or so, along with some of my favorites from the 2002-2010 era of the original gallery: http://tuxpaint.org/gallery/ I'll continue adding to that page, and will also finally go back and work through 14 year's worth of email to pick out some of the best examples of art submitted by kids. I'm retiring the original gallery, though it remains online for now. Thanks, enjoy, and stay safe! -- -bill! Sent from my computer |

A set of APK packages ("installer" programs) for Android are now available that can install the Tux Paint Stamps collection on your device! Along with a "main" package, which contains the collection of artwork, sound effects (e.g., birds chirping, etc.), and descriptive text strings, there are also separate optional packages that can be used to install the localized descriptive spoken sounds for many stamps, in various languages. You can find them on the Android download page on the Tux Paint website: http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/android/ Huge thanks to Pere Pujal Carabantes for putting this together. If you're interested in beta testing the upcoming version of Tux Paint, version 0.9.26, and friends (config tool & stamps collection), we've created release candidates that you can download right now! New in Tux Paint: * Ability to show much larger UI buttons; useful for high-DPI displays & eye gaze trackers * Ability to show larger color selector buttons (in multiples rows) * The "Fill" tool now offers radial & linear gradient modes, and does a better job filling around anti-aliased edges * New "Checkerboard" magic tool * New "Pixels" magic tool * New "Clone" magic tool * Documentation overhaul, for easier translation by the project volunteers. French and Galician, and partial Japanese translations provided. * Reduced CPU usage * A handful of translation updates Download for Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10 (for both 686 and x86_64 architecture; and in both portable ZIP and installer EXE versions), Windows 2000 and XP (in ZIP and EXE versions), macOS (10.10 thru 11), and as source code (.tar.gz): https://sourceforge.net/projects/tuxpaint/files/tuxpaint/0.9.26-rc1/ Not much happened with the Stamps collection since December 2020's release (one translation update). But you can get it for Windows (ZIP and EXE versions), macOS, and as 'source' (.tar.gz): https://sourceforge.net/projects/tuxpaint/files/tuxpaint-stamps/2021-06-13-rc1/ And in the Tux Paint Config. tool, the most notable changes are: * Options to control the new UI settings in Tux Paint * "All Users" support works on macOS again It comes with the Windows versions, and is also available for macOS and as source (.tar.gz): https://sourceforge.net/projects/tuxpaint/files/tuxpaint-config/0.0.17-rc1/ If you try it out, please let us know what you think. And, of course, definitely tell us if you come across any problems. That can help us ensure that the final version that we make available on the website is as stable as possible.
