Hello. I'm trying to get support for a ppp connection to the Inet. I've added the right modules, the ppp package and other stuff but I cannot find the 'setserial' utility. Please, in which package is the 'setserial' utility? Thanks in advanced. Nikki. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Matt.. I noticed an idosyncracy of getpkg the other day.. ----- If you request a package with: getpkg diskutil The package is installed and the init is run. ------ If you request a package with: getpkg diskutil.tgz The package is installed and the init is NOT run. ------ I don't know if this was intentional or not. But a look at the code confirms that getpkg tries to init /etc/init.d/diskutil.tgz, which fails. I did not look at addpkg. It might do the same... |

Does the Trinux system have the default gateway set properly? The route command (or netstat -nr) should show a default route to the gateway. If not, then add one with route and try again. Does the gateway run IPchains? It may be blocking the data channel that snarf may require. Try looking for blocked packets coming back to your trinux box on the redhat gateway. I hear that IPtables helps to alleviate this problem too. I don't know if snarf will use passive ftp to grab it's files, but behind an IPchains firewall, passive mode is necessary. You might try removing the dhcp file from (I think..) /tux/config in the boot floppy. This will cause the boot process to pause, and ask for you to enter the IP, DNS and gateway by hand. Oh, one more thing... the trinux boot process relies on a working DNS to find the package server. If DNS is not available, loading the packages will fail. As a final option... I would suggest putting the package files on your own web server. This helps lessen the load on the public package server, and it will make your boot process very fast. The price is a small one (a little disk space) and the benefits are great. Also, as changes are made to the packages, sometimes they will break. By using your own package source, you can control which packages are updated... I do it that way... Hope this helps.... Matthew Franz is awesome. Just a little kudos. The kernel you built with the PERC2 driver worked great. I have access to the partitions on the RAID controller. The ONLY caveat is that you used a kernel that did not support NTFS. However, a simple 'insmod ntfs.o' fixed that. Thank you very much. Richard Thomas |

It is unlikely that you will be able to fit both the ide.tgz packages and the pcmcia kernel module packages on a single floppy but if your network is connected you can load them remotely or put them on another DOS floppy # fmount # cd /floppy # pkgadd ide.tgz # pkgadd fs.mods.tgz You might have to run /etc/init.d/ide because I can't remember if pkgadd automatically insmods the modules. If you have network connectivity then just do #getpkg 2.4.5/ide.tgz #getpkg 2.4.5/fsmods.tgz then insmod /lib/modules/filesystem.o -mdf __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Could you please consider ; I have created the pcmcia boot disk . The laptop is 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.12 is a RHat gateway to the Internet . dhcpcd runs on the gateway and masquerading provides IP address sharing . This works fine with windows which are configured to know of a gateway . MY problem is that can snarf to 192.168.1.12 which happens to host a mail server and www server but I can not snarf to the outside world . ie tirnux.sourceforge.net ( 216.136.171.201) to get the packages. Could you please advise as to my options and what is necessary to get the laptop monitoring host up and running . I assume there is a option other than running a dhcp server on my gateway . regards , n |

I know realize that I was being stupid and looked around the list until I went nearly blind and found some more info... I found the mousedev.o module and put it on my boot floppy next I proceeded to vi /tux/config/modules and added mousedev.o to the modules file... after rebooting my system and searching through "dmesg" and doing a few lsmod's I found no record of the module that I loaded ... what gives? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp |

If the SCSI will detect a disk OK, then you might load an older 2.2 kernel based OS on a small, temporary scsi boot drive. Hook it into the scsi chain and boot from it. Mount the (now accessable thru the Dell Rpm) Raid disks and do whatever you need to.. Or dd from the raid device (which might be found in /dev/rd??) to a waiting empty scsi drive. The extra work involved in getting Trinux to see the raid disks, may not be worth the small cost of a scsi disk.... On Fri, 30 Nov 2001, Richard Thomas wrote: > Thanks for the answer. Thanks for the answer. You got me further along than I was. The RAID is a Dell PERC2 controller. Dell has a RPM for it, but it only supports the 2.2 kernel. I did load the md.o, xor.o, and raid5.o modules. I don't understand the results though. The SCSI adapters detect great. It detects the SCSI CD drive, but I can't seem to find it to mount it. dmesg shows the CD drive as sr0. Is there a special method to mount SCSI devices? I am sending the results of the dmesg. I was hoping you could find a moment to take a look and steer me in he correct direction. Thanks for all your help so far. Still catching up on this thread :( First things first. I would create an adaptec boot floppy I would use a more recent boot image from http://www.io.com/~mdfranz/trinux/boot/17nov-2413 Replace the bzimage on the disk with the one from http://trinux.sourceforge.net/kernel/2.4.5/adaptec/ Then boot with the floppy and do a # dmesg make sure the Adaptec driver has been detected See if the devices sda1 sdb (or whatever) are detected My guess is they will not be because of the RAID. Do you know which kernel driver is required? - mdf > The reason I need read-only access to the NTFS partition is so I can > create a bit-copy of the partition for forensic analysis. Trinux image is 0.80rc2-ide, ping works fine, traceroute won't work. Let me know if you need more info. bash# traceroute 192.168.1.40 icmp: unknown protocol val |

I'm still kind of new to this type of work. Supposedly, > I just have to place the modules (.o files) on the boot > floppy. However, there is not enough room on the boot floppy. The way we do it is run everything off a server. That way, you just have to carry around one floppy with you. Just put up an anonymous ftp server with all the packages you want. Check out the docs on the trinux site on how to load new packages, and where it looks for them on the server. It's all there and it's pretty straightforward. This is REALLY slick if you can make it work in your environment. The other alternative is, of course, to build a CD. I have no experience at that, so I'm afraid I'm no help to you there. :( > I would love to compile a kernel with the modules I need, but > I do not yet know how to do that. Any idea where there is > good info on doing that? Well, there are lots of resources on compiling a kernel from scratch. I think Matt has the config file that he uses for the kernel on the site somewhere. You could take that config file and use it as a starting place. Here's some info to get you started compiling kernels: http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html Particularly sections 2 through 5. Section 10 talks about modules, that might be worth looking at too. I would avoid compiling the driver into the kernel, if possible, though. Using a module is much more flexible. > I learn very quick. The ntfs support > is so I can take a look at the partition before I create the > bit-copy. Right. It uses ISOLINUX -- see the ISOLINUX web page http://syslinux.zytor.com. I double checked my bash history file for the mkisofs command for building the .iso but it was too long ago.
