I'm interested in the same thing. This is what I've figured out so far. (Matthew -- let me know if I'm wrong on anything.) 1) All of the original code I've seen evidence of in Trinux are in shell scripts, so in a way you already have the source but just don't know it. 2) Much of this is actually stored in a compressed minux file system on the boot disk -- initrd.gz. You can poke around this / modify it by using the loop back device. Let me know if you don't know how to do this and I'll find the applicable HOWTO for you. I think Matt also has a copy of this in a variety of formats under the "bleeding edge" link on the site. 3) The kernel is straight from Linus' Linux sources. 4) The config files for the kernel can be found the web site, at http://trinux.sourceforge.net/kernel/2.4.13/. Note that this is for 2.4.13, and 2.4.5 is the kernel that the current boot disks use. I don't think it makes too much difference, though... I wanted to use the modified Mandrake stock kernel 2.4.8 (it has XFS and other goodies) and with a little hacking I got it to compile and it works great. 5) The packages are mostly binaries, but in most cases you can get the sources directly from the maintainer of the original software. 6) There's an ISO script in the download section on sourceforge which automates creating a CD ROM. So, if you are interested in making your new system from scratch, I think you've got a great example here. The only things I can see that might be missing are: 1) Any scripts Matt may have done to automate the packaging process. 2) Any patches that may have been needed to packages 3) I don't know what was involved in some of the base packages like the libraries, etc. The reason I haven't seen these is that they might not exist. Matt may have just packaged things manually and stolen the libraries from another distro (I think he built this on Slackware) I hope this helps! Hi, I was wondering, where the source to trinux would be? I want to try to eventualy make my own OS (or at leaste my own linux distro.). So I'm getting as much source for example as I can, but I cant find the trinux source code. It would be nice to have the .config- files for all kernel-sources. I'm trying for over a week now to get a small working kernel with the sound-modules and still trying very hard. B.t.w., I'm also learning very much. I will stay with kernel 2.4.5. I have no need to upgrade. On my machine, making a new kernel takes over an hour. The reason I use Trinux is the very nice possability to get all done on just 1 floppy and get a fully working system with the packages-loading from http. It's rather a rather unique way of getting a full working remote system, independent of the server's OS. I'm not aware of similar projects. And now the questions: Please send me the config-file used for creating the net image disk with kernel 2.4.5 Is there anyone else on the list who is interested in configuring the task a remote client has to do (this is my main purpose of using Trinux)? Folks, To clear up some of the confusion, I have wiped clean the mirrors page (http://trinux.sf.net/mirrors.html) so that it is now up to date and accurate. If you are interested in being added to this list (or put back on this list) let me know. Here is the script the folks at wiretapped.net are using to mirror trinux with lftp (see freshmeat for the tool) Thanks -mdf ---- cd /path/to/trinux/boot/ /usr/local/bin/lftp -e 'set net:max-retries 5 && set net:idle 60 && set net:timeout 60 && o http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/trinux/ && mirror --delete --verbose && quit' cd /path/to/trinux/kernel/ /usr/local/bin/lftp -e 'set net:max-retries 5 && set net:idle 60 && set net:timeout 60 && o http://trinux.sourceforge.net/kernel/ && mirror --delete --verbose && quit' cd /path/to/trinux/pkg/ /usr/local/bin/lftp -e 'set net:max-retries 5 && set net:idle 60 && set net:timeout 60 && o http://trinux.sourceforge.net/pkg/ && mirror --delete --verbose && quit' cd /path/to/trinux/util/ /usr/local/bin/lftp -e 'set net:max-retries 5 && set net:idle 60 && set net:timeout 60 && o http://trinux.sourceforge.net/util/ && mirror --delete --verbose && quit' |

I have downloaded the last version of trinux (0.80rc2) from the sourceforge site (latest directory). It appeared that i had to force the detection of the ide disk with the c:\trinux directory... So i fill the script named "last" to force trinux to mount the /dev/hda1 disk and to add the packages from the c:\trinux directory... I have inspect it quickly before forcing trinux to do what I want because i was very impatient to see trinux working :-)... All i know is that trinux, although the fact i have filled the "fstab" file in the "config" directory (2 lines : "hda1:vfat" & "hda5:vfat")... linuxrc told me that it doesn't find the /dev/hda1 filesystem... because it seems it tries to mount the /dev/hda1 filesystem in the /hda1 directory and this directory doesn't exist... The script doesn't seem to create it... I think it is because of my ignorance of how trinux works exactly... Maybe i do not use the right iso image for my floppy (ide iso image)... All i know is that i don't find any libncurse library and i don't know where to find them in order to open vi :-)... Now, my trinux works because of the "last" script i modified (Note that i had to suppress the commentary lines because one character seems to be interpreted by the shell program !... it is the "/" or the "'" character i think)... My guess is that the problem is that RAID hardware (which may/may not be proprietry) is not recognized by the kernel. The server also probably uses SCSI. What type of server/RAID hardware, SCSI hardware? Probably the easiest is to build a custom boot floppy with a custom kernel and then either load the packages you need off the CD or floppy. - mdf |

The linuxrc script seems to have some errors (for my computer)... How can i change the linuxrc script to work properly (automatic detect) with my computer ? Modules can be added to the boot floppy and then you add the name and any kernel parameters to the Many of the modules have kernel-packages see http://trinux.sf.net/pkg/2.4.13 http://trinux.sf.net/pkg/2.4.5 which automatically install the modules > 4) Do I need to do anything special for the boot loader? Hi! I was wondering what is required to recompile Trinux's kernel? I think I need to know: 1) Are you using any special patches to the standard kernel? 2) Where can I find the config file you used? 3) Can I use modules? I didn't see any in /lib/modules within initrd.gz. Where do they go? 4) Do I need to do anything special for the boot loader? (I'm used to lilo, and haven't used syslinux before.) 5) Any other pitfalls? I've got a utility I want that requires write access to NTFS, hense my initial need to build the kernel. I often find myself hacking the kernel, though, so I'd like to understand how Trinux's kernel is built and installed. Thanks! John |

Okay all, I solved my issues and I am now able to remote control my Trinux box = from my Win98 workstation. Thanks to Matthew and Tim for your = assistance. Want to know how I did it? Well, I finally read the MAN = pages for SSH ans SSHD. The secret lies in file permissions. The big key = was the line in the SSH MAN page that stated, "...ssh ignores a private = key file if it is accessible by others." So I checked the permissions of = the AUTHORIZED_KEYS file as well. I figure my problem might be Windows = related. I was generating the keys on a Windows box and saving them to = the Trinux boot floppy. Unfortunately, the default permissions for these = files was grant all (-rwxrwxrwx). So, after I changed the permissions on = the AUTHORIZED_KEYS and IDENTITY files to -rw-------, I was able to = login to localhost. Next I tried the Windows client, Tera Term. At first = I was unsuccessful. Once I put 'root' in the 'User name:' field along = with entering the appropriate passphrase, voila. Now I'll have to try = using the SSH2 protocol. Wish me luck and thanks again for your help. Rich |

Folks, If for some reason you've run across www.trinux.org, you will not find the friendly penguin there. This is either one of two things: 1) DNS screwup 2) Compromise of ISP/Web Hosting folks I either case your best bet is you use the Sourceforge site until further notice (http://trinux.sf.net) and I would *not* use http://www.trinux.org/pkg/ (although it doesn't appear to work) for package loading. Thanks = mdf |

Sometimes it is better to take what someone else has done, and just modify it. Look at the iso image for Trinux. There are some important components in the root of the CD, including the boot.img file and catalog file. Also, you can search for the keyword, El Torito or ElTorito, which is the moniker delegated to the "trick" of making a CD bootable. In a nutshell, the trick is to create an image of a boot floppy, and fool the OS into thinking it is booting the floppy. Crude, but it works. I think there is also a readme file in most Linux distributions. Try /usr/doc/HOWTO/Bootable-CDROM or something like that. If you just need the steps to re-create the iso file, then do this... cd /tmp mkdir myiso mount /dev/cdrom /mnt cd /mnt find . -depth -print | cpio -pmduv /tmp/myiso cd /tmp/myiso ## Make any changes in this branch you want to. mkisofs -v -J -o ../myiso.iso -b boot.img . then burn the iso image to your CD and test. Unfortunately, much of the boot process is controlled in the boot.img file, which is an image of a floppy disk, which is another task. But wait, there is more... The real germ of the boot process is contained in the initrd.gz file, which is contained in the boot.img disk image. initrd.gz is a compressed filesystem with some executables, libraries and startup scripts. I've released a new 4mb .iso image for testing (0.81pre0-24.5). The primary purpose is for laptops since previous versions were missing the pcmcia-bin.tgz package. It is available at: http://www.trinux.org/iso/ or http://prdownloads.sf.net/trinux/ but this is very slow and I'm not sure it got uploaded correctly Post any problems to the list. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? SSH is pretty tricky to setup. Because it provides protection/security, it has several strict requirements. This pre-release (0.8) beta version of Trinux (a minimal specialized version of Linux) is a really poor environment to learn the intracacies of SSH. I thought I noticed earlier you mentioned relocating the public key from the destination to the source machine, buy I ignored it cause it is obvious to anyone who uses SSH regularly that it is the other way around. You need to generate a key pair on the MindTerm Client. Then put the public key onto the trinux box, into the authorized_keys or authorized_keys2 file. Or both, if you don't know which one you got. Perhaps Matt's instructions are not real clear on this. He says he will rewrite the Docs someday... The new SSH packages, require that openssh be loaded before opensshd, failure to do so will generate an error message, but it goes by quickly, so you may miss it. Make sure openssh precedes opensshd in your pkglist file. Check on the Trinux box, that the host key was generated and placed in /usr/local/etc/, if I recall correctly. You might try running sshd in debug mode, from the command line: killall sshd sshd -d -d -d The output is cryptic, and it must be restarted after each attempt, but it helps. When you get it running, and you can log in from your client, then run: save-sshkeys on the Trinux box. It should write the host keys and authorized-keys files to the floppy where they can be found next time you boot. CD-ROM users must place the files by hand onto the cd image. I think I left out the support for identity.pub.. There are so many other ways to restore the keys, and the identity.pub was SSH1 specific, etc... I hope this helps... Again, this is a really poor environment to be learning SSH.... Michael, I am *very* close to having a new initrd.gz to use and hope to burn a small test CD for folks to test today. This will be targetted for laptop users because none of the existing ISO's work. I have changed the directory structure so that within the hard drive/CD you'll have the following: /trinux -> kpkg - kernel packages that will get loaded automatically -> bootpkg - manditory packages (such as dnslibs, dhcpcd, and the pcmcia) that will gut loaded automatically -> pkg - will get loaded based on the pkglist Flopiies will also have a kpkg and bootpkg directory but it will be on the floppy root If anytbody is adventurous the latest initrd.gz are alwasy at http://www.io.com/~mdfranz/trinux/initrd/ and the .tgz file is the source. Package loading from a vfat/minix partition works and booting from a DOS partition using Loadlin (and obviously loading the packages > > thanks for your advice. In trinux-80rc2-2.4.5.iso nfs-client.tgz has mount stored in lib/usr/sbin/mount I was wondering if there was a reason for this. |

Hi there, thanks for your advice. I haven't tried booting from the Tim Burton's image yet, but I did notice that both images are missing the pcmcia-bin package. I discovered that when I tried to use Phill's suggestion below and couldn't because that package was missing. So, I'm guessing that I'll have the same problem when booting from the tburt image. Before I burn a new cd, though, I have a couple more questions. First, what significance do the modules in the trinux/modules directory on the CD have? If they're automatically loaded when the system boots, why are there also packages that have those modules in them? If they're not automatically loaded, and should be loaded via their corresponding packages, why are they there? Second, if I want to load the pcmcia packages I need on boot-up (specifically, pcmcia-bin, pcmcia-coremods, and pcmcia-smc), will listing those names in trinux/tux/config/pkglist do it? If not, what else do I have to do? Thanks for your help. -mas On Tue, 6 Nov 2001, Matthew Franz wrote: > Does this problem exist in Tim Burton's .iso image as well, because the > .iso I released (80rc2) is missing a package or two. The new packages are up on the following sites: http://www.trinux.org/pkg/ http://trinux.sf.net/pkg/ http://www.io.com/~mdfranz/trinux/pkg/ If you use and OpenSSH client (I'm assuming 2.x or greater) you will need to generate a DSA key with # ssh-keygen -t dsa to generate the id_dsa.pub that will get added to /.ssh/authorized_keys2 just as # ssh-keygen created the identity.pub which got added to /.ssh/authorized_keys if you have SSH1 keys (authorized_keys) you will have to connect with the ssh -1 command, otherwise you'll get prompted for a password. I have not yet tested retrieving saved keys from the floppy although they do get saved properly. And a big thanks to Tim for all his help on this!!!! Thanks for your patience and let me know if you have any more problems. I'll try to update the docs shortly. -mdf > Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 20:44:37 -0000 > From: David Eales <dav...@nt...> > To: tb...@ti..., Richard Thomas <ri...@th...> > Cc: tri...@li... > Subject: Re: [Trinux-talk] Trinux Remote Control > > thanks a lot i will look forward to seeing that > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <tb...@ti...> > To: "Richard Thomas" <ri...@th...> > Cc: <tri...@li...> > Sent: Wednesday, November 07, 2001 8:15 PM > Subject: Re: [Trinux-talk] Trinux Remote Control > > > > > > I have looked at opensshd and cleaned it up a little. > > > > I need to submit it to Matt, to make sure I didn't break anything he is > > doing. > > > > I think I fixed most of these sshd problems some people are having... > > > > Look for an updated opensshd.tgz and openssh.tgz soon. > > > > On Wed, 7 Nov 2001, Richard Thomas wrote: > > > > > Okay, I need some help here.
