You could do that (on linux at least) by checking the numbers in
/proc/net/dev
every few seconds.

No, it's just that (admin-wise) peep is not really that much useful. It's
fancy, but not that useful.

Understood. Attached is a patch which can be used to build a Debian package
out of Peep and fixes a number of bugs in the latest release. If you don't 
know how to use it I could upload packages to people.debian.org/~jfs

I just don't want to maintain more packages, so it would be best if you
found a suitable maintainer for these. I can make the initial upload,
however.

  Hi Barry. To get logparser to work, you'll need to change the
regular expressions that it's using to find events in the log.
That will solve the logparser issue. As for the server crashing,
that's hard to say. It's possible that running it on Fedora
has exposed some sort of race issue. Might be worth running
it in gdb to see where it fails.

the log format on Fedora is different enough that logparser doesn't 
see any events. (I tried sudo, root logins, etc. Fedora doesn't seem 
to log sudos though.)

I've also tried sysmonitor... that works better, but the server seems 
to segfault after a few hours.

The last line before the segfault is
"Set volume for state [loadavg] to [0.023529]."

  I'm not familiar with Collin put there, but it might be that he
has the clients checking the configuration file for which ports
were defined. You might want to add a new port definition to the
configuration file for use by the client. Note that multiple
instances of a client can be started up on different machines and
connect to the same port.

  Hi Barry. Most Linux distributions have moved to ALSA and integrated
it into the kernel. That being said, do you have a /dev/audio device?
You might want to try that. It sounds like there's some weirdness
with the kernel. Is there a previous, more stable version you could
try? Might be the driver for your sound device.

How does one get more than one client talking to a server?

I can get clients to connect to the server on port 1999 or 2001, 
(using --port= and --noautodiscovery) but I can't get more than one 
client to connect, even when using different ports.

It always says "There are no open sockets".

If I had to make a wild guess I'd guess the volume is getting turned

I think I have it working now... I noticed 'play' seemed to be 
hanging after outputing the first second of the sound, and a friend 
was having other audio corruption on fedora... anyways there was a 
new kernel released today and it seems to have fixed the problem.

  Hi Barry. It could be you have the server using a device
for which the volume is turned off. The play command might
use a different audio device or ALSA sound drivers directly.
Have you checked your mixer?
