  Hi Barry. Most Linux distributions have moved to ALSA and integrated
it into the kernel. That being said, do you have a /dev/audio device?
You might want to try that. It sounds like there's some weirdness
with the kernel. Is there a previous, more stable version you could
try? Might be the driver for your sound device.
