I don't think you can remove mailing lists once they're created
(at least that used to be the case). Otherwise, I would agree on
removing it. I don't think it's that bad anyway, since every can view
the archives. But, I'll check and see if they've changed it.

I've checked a preliminary version of the new Java server into
CVS. I'm making steady progress and am currently working on the Audio
mixer. The communications infrastructure is there and works correctly
though. Due to the status of J2EE 1.4 (still under devel by Sun), you
may need to mess with the SOAP provider part to get it to work (I had
to download the XML processing pack to get it to work with my build,
although it kinda worked with a previous version of the j2ee runtime).
As soon as I get a preliminary version of the audio mixer working,
I'll start adding the sound engine and then we can build the protocol
between the clients in there. The goal will be to support legacy Perl
clients as well. So, feel free to take a peek.

Hi all. I've investigated and fixed the segfault bug under higher
loads that Xavier noticed. The problem was a premature freeing of
the string that contained contained the sound name after the event
was added to the mixer queue. The server now handles heavy loads
with no problem. I also tweaked the dynamic volume algorithm so that
everything stays smooth and the server calculates dynamic volumes
correctly.

As the procedure is to get the source (which already contain all the code, plus the config examples) and Peep-Sounds-0.5.0.tar.gz, it would be redondant and confusing to have things like code/config in sound. and worse, when you unpack it, it overrides the code for the server... i mean, if you do a cvs checkout, you get a peep-0.5.x directory with code in it. now, you untar the sound tar, and, it writes peep-0.5.x/server/config.c, (and others) which are already here ! not mentionning you now have rc2, not cvs... thanks -- xavier |

Hey Xavier. I'm gonna have to turn off my mail sorter it seems :)
I did a huge spurt of work on it and then it kinda languished while
I got distracted. I did have plans for putting it into CVS. It's
currently written on Java J2EE 1.4, which is still stabilizing,
specifically the SOAP libraries used are not fully baked in the
latest beta from Sun. It's kind of annoying because a whole bunch of
java libraries need to be downloaded first and they're not small. So
hopefully those dependencies can be minimized once the server is
up. But I've been trying to coordinate with Collin and get our show on
the road. Both of us have been a little distracted as of late.
I'll take a look at the seg faulting this week :)

Please feel free to make the commit. My rules of thumb for the
debugging levels are
1: Essential debugging information
3: A good mid-range for debugging informatin
6: Includes detailed information on network traffic
7: Lots of information
9: Only the most trivial of debugging information.
As in whoa. Watch out. No telling what's going
to come scrolling across the screen.
So you might consider 7 rather than 9.
I got the other message you posted to the list. I have a deliverable
due in the morning and 50 exams to grade by tomorrow at noon so I won't
get a chance to look at it until late tomorrow but I will look at it.
At first glance, it looks like we may have to put an opportune eval in

(ie the server segfaults, free the binded ports, logparser is left alone) may be it should try to re-open the tcp socket until it succeed ?
