Hi Michael,
I think I have it working now... I noticed 'play' seemed to be 
hanging after outputing the first second of the sound, and a friend 
was having other audio corruption on fedora... anyways there was a 
new kernel released today and it seems to have fixed the problem.

BTW, if I tell peep to use /dev/dsp, does that mean it's using alsa or not?
Should I change that?
