Hi: First of all I really love this program. Thanks! What I would like to do is export my databases at work and import them at home, so they will all be conveniently available. However, when go to do the export, the dialog box includes the message, "This operation will create an unprotected copy of ALL of the passwords in the database. Deleting this copy after use is *NOT* sufficient. This bypasses the security of the program." If deleting the copy is not sufficient, why not, and what would be sufficient? Thanks, sroushdy |

Hi, This is to announce the second beta release of PasswordSafe 3.0. All of the major problems uncovered in the first beta have been addressed, except a problem with win98SE and ME, which I cannot duplicate. Most importantly, a security implementation flaw on non-XP platforms has been resolved. Bugs fixed in 3.0Beta2: ======================= [1450484] Trialing garbage in tooltip text fixed (thanks to DK). [1462527] Uses a decent PRNG for non-XP platforms, closing key recovery attack vulnerability. [1446183] Export to v2 format now readable by pwsafe v2.x [1463103] Fields in Edit Dialog are wider. [1450486] URLs without a protocol now default to http. [1459326, 1427642] Fixed problems with password prompt (thanks to DK) Known Problems: =============== [1453108] Database problems with Win98SE and ME [] Online help has not been updated NOTES: ====== 1. This is still a BETA release! It should NOT be used as the only tool for storing "real" password information. 2. This release will read databases saved by previous versions of PasswordSafe. When saving a database, make sure that the new database will have the "psafe3" suffix. This will guarantee that your old database is not overwritten. If you do over-write it by mistake, you can export to old formats from this version, with no loss of data. 3. The purpose of this release is to gather feedback on bugs, on the new features, and on other features you wish to see implemented. Please enter feedback via the project's summary page: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=41019&atid=429579 for bug reports, https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=41019&atid=429582 for feature requests. Hi, Thanks for the new version, looks good to me. I'm a daily user of this program, on my PC at home as well as mobile and I am very pleased with = it.=20 I want to give some feedback on the new version: The first thing I tried after I installed the new version is the = autotype feature. I have an account that requires a Username and Password, = followed by three fields that need the information about my birthday in a format = like DD MM YYYY. Switching between the fields can be done with tabs. In the previous version I put in the Notes field the following string: autotype:\u\t\p\t\15\t\02\t\1956 that gave an error within the fields = with a text like "error resolving windows...."? In the new version V3 I put the string "\u\t\p\t\15\t\02\t\1956" = (without the quotes) in the autotype field. This results in filling the username = and password field correctly, but the date and the month field both get = filled with "\B" and the year field is filled with "\B95" (all without the = quotes) in stead of 15<tab>02<tab>1956. Is it something that I do in the wrong way? Or is this an issue that can be addressed in the next version? Hope you can use my feedback, Greetings, Ruud Janssen -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: pas...@li... [mailto:pas...@li...] Namens pas...@li... Hi, PasswordSafe 2.16 is available for download. This release fixes some minor problems and adds a couple of minor features. Thanks to DK for his help in this version. [1412208] Tab sequence of opening dialog fixed. [1376566, 1393910] Databases written with early 2.x versions of PasswordSafe can now be read correctly. [] Installation kit now adds MFC71.dll if missing. Yes, I have .NET installed, I need it for DriveImage 7. I was greeted with missing dll's after installation. I had to use a site such as http://www.dll-files.com and had to extract the missing dll files to the \Windows\System32 file folder (at least in XP-Home that is) Missing files: mfc71.dll msvrc71.dll msvcp71.dll After I installed the above missing files to the WIndows System folder, the program ran fine. Hi, I am using Password safe for a considerable period now and with = pleasure. It works good and I trust it. I used it without reading the instructions very well. Therefore I wasn't using it very cleverly. I discovered today the autotype feature and = tried it immediately. The most login-procedures work wit hit fine. However I have = one account that works differently. It asks for a username, then the = password, followed by my birth date in 3 fields dd mm yyyy. As you suggest in the help I created a customized string as follows = (fictive birthdates): /u/t/p/28/t08/t2005/t In this case the date isn't submitted in the fields. Is this because I don't use the feature the right way? Can you help me with this? Thanks in advance and greetings Ruud Janssen -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: pas...@li... Hi, PasswordSafe 2.09 is available for download. This release provides a re-implementation of the locking mechanism which addresses many of the problems that arose with the previous version. Bugs fixed in 2.09: =================== [1107971] Edit via double-click no longer crashes the application. [1103501,1119212,1138635] Refined file lock mechanism. New Features for 2.09: ====================== When saving a database, the previous version, if one exists, will be renamed with the ".dat~" suffix. This provides some minimal automatic backup. Enjoy, Rony p.s. I've left out a few minor improvements that I hoped to put in this release in order to get it out the door quickly, as the locking feature was causing quite a few problems. The next release should be a bit more substantial in terms of minor bug fixes and new features. |

As was mentioned before I have been using the http://sourceforge.net/projects/pwsafe/ program on Solaris and Linux. It works well but as far as I can tell doesn't support 2.0 formatted dat files. When I search for certain hostnames using pwsafe in a 2.0 dat file it just doesn't show up but open the same file in PasswordSafe and its there. The dev log says the version in CVS supports 2.0 dat files but I haven't been able to get it to compile (do to my lack of CVS knowledge, I would guess). I have started work on a Perl/html front end to the pwsafe program, but due to the fact that people using windows insist on upgrading the dat files to 2.0 format I've hit a brick wall. Any help would be greatly appreciated on getting the latest version of pwsafe to work from CVS. Thanks! Early happy New Year to every one. -cliff -----Original Message----- From: Arnaud Sahuguet [mailto:arn...@gm...] Sent: Wednesday, December 22, 2004 10:37 AM To: ro...@us... Cc: pas...@li... Hi >>>I would like to be able to decrypt the .dat file from any machine, >>>from the command line for instance. I started using PWSafe some years ago in a Win-only environment, but have moved to *nix OSes since. I did not want to migrate all passwords, so I use pwsafe.sourceforge.net to access the dat files in these environments. Works great. Hope this saves some time - re-inventing the wheel takes too long ... Maurice |

Hi Arnauld, Short answer: The .dat file cannot be encrypted/decrypted all at once. A workaround would be to export the .dat file to plain text and encrypting/decrypting this with a program/algorithm that is available on your target platform. WARNING: Doing this is potentially VERY unsecure, as the decrypted data may remain on the target machine, even after you've deleted the file. Long answer: There's no need to guess, as the format of the .dat file is fully documented in the files that come with the source code. Briefly, each entry stored as a record of variable length fields. All are encrypted using Blowfish with the same key, but each record has its own salt. Hope this helps. Hi, I saw some previous posting on this topic but no conclusion. I agree that decrypting the .dat file may create some security issues. However, since PasswordSafe only runs on a windows platform, what happens when I am travelling with no Windows box around. I would like to be able to decrypt the .dat file from any machine, from the command line for instance. My guess is that the .dat file stores the passwords as ASCII, with AES or Blowfish encryption, and maybe some salting. I just would like to know which algorithm to use. Once again, without the password, the only way to crack the .dat file is to use brute force or dictionary attack. regards, Arnaud |
