Hi, Nolan Eakins has written a Linux version of PasswordSafe! This port, called MyPasswordSafe, is compatible with pre-2.0 database files created by the Windows version. MyPasswordSafe is built upon Qt 3. For details and links to the source and binaries, see http://www.semanticgap.com/myps/. Note that I have not reviewed MyPasswordSafe's code in depth, nor have I tried to run the program. Specifically, I've no idea if MyPasswordSafe is as (in)secure as PasswordSafe is or not. Note also that this is a first release, and that Nolan is actively developing the program. For the time being, we have decided not to merge Nolan's code into the PasswordSafe codebase on SourceForge. I'd like to thank Nolan for his effort, and for making his work available in both source and binary form. This is OpenSource development at its best! Cheers, Rony |

Hi, A second beta version of PasswordSafe 2.0 has just been released. *MANY* thanks to all who've downloaded the first beta and commented on it - I've tried to include as many fixes and improvements as I could. The files are available from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/passwordsafe/pwsafe-2.0pre2-bin.zip?d ownload and http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/passwordsafe/pwsafe-2.0pre2-src.zip?d ownload The md5sums are: 72c120e5465b2abc1766520ae475bd84 pwsafe-2.0pre2-bin.zip 616073e0388ecbb15c2277b9bb3c0898 pwsafe-2.0pre2-src.zip Following are the Release Notes. enjoy, Rony Password Safe 2.0pre2 Release Note - January 2004 ================================================= This note describe the new features, fixed bugs and known problems with Password Safe version 2.0pre2. For a short description of Password Safe, please see the accompanying README.txt file. For more information on the product and the project, please visit http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net This is the second BETA release of version 2.0 of PasswordSafe. While much effort has been put into assuring the stability of the program and the integrity of the data, it cannot be considered "production quality" yet, and therefore should not be used except for evaluating the new features and providing input as to bugs, feature requests, etc. New Features for 2.0pre2: ========================= [RFE 504086] It is now possible to export the password database into a plain ASCII file. Fields are separated by a tab character. Note that this is a VERY large security if used carelessly. New Features for 2.0pre1: ========================= [RFE 782508, 829563, 815350, 555440] Tree, or heirarchical, view of entries now supported. This allows the user to define categories, sub-categories, etc. Bugs Fixed in 2.0pre2: ====================== [859798, 859565] Debug libraries are no longer required. - Export to v1.7 format fixed. Known Problems: =============== - The Help file is outdated for this release. - The Search facility is broken. - The default user name facility is broken. |

Hi, This is the first public release of Passwordsafe 2.0. Some features are missing, and there are some annoying GUI issues, but the program is stable, and it seems good enough to start getting feedback from users asides myself... THIS IS NOT YET READY FOR GENERAL USE. Please download and use this program only if your are interested in seeing the new features, and would like to help the development process by reporting bugs, desired features, etc. (or, of course, coding). Two major new features in this release: A new database format, and a new tree view. The former should be invisible to users, the latter quite useful. The application imports old database files transparently, and warns the user upon saving that the new format is incompatible. PLEASE SAVE YOUR DATABASE UNDER A NEW NAME. This way, the stable (1.9x) passwordsafe will still be able to access your data if something goes wrong. Please write me if you find problems with this release. A small sample database and description of how to recreate the problem is the best way to report bugs. Files are downloadable from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/passwordsafe/pwsafe-2.0pre1-bin.zip?d ownload and http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/passwordsafe/pwsafe-2.0pre1-src.zip?d ownload md5sums are 36038b0d7f29c48ef38bf6db8b7fcd73 pwsafe-2.0pre1-bin.zip 665b5f6d0ea01cef1676f7d854c6cae4 pwsafe-2.0pre1-src.zip enjoy, Rony |

Hi, Release 1.92c.2 is available for download. This is a maintenance release for PocketPC (WinCE) versions of PasswordSafe, fixing the following: Bugfix [818692] PPC: notes not fully visible: Added horizontal and vertical scroll bars to the notes field in both the Add and Edit dialogs to allow easy scrolling through the data. This fix raises an additional known problem in that entering data into the notes field is difficult because the field is partially obscured by the SIP. Thanks to Kevin for this release. Hi, Release 1.92c.1 is available for download. This is a maintenance release for PocketPC (WinCE) versions of PasswordSafe, fixing the following: Bugfix [787325] Endianness of the MIPS processor was wrong. Bugfix [791417] [792555] Passwords were saved by the Pocket PC autocomplete feature Bugfix [791423] Multiline notes were displayed incorrectly in the edit dialog In addition, the following new feature has been added: There is a new check box option ("Double-click shows password") in Options/Display that changes the behaviour of a double click on a password entry. When checked, double clicks present a dialogue box showing the password. When unchecked the password is copied to the clipboard as normal. Thanks to Kevin for this release. Hi, Release 1.92c is available for download. This is a maintenance release, fixing a few minor annoyances: Bugfix [783314] Clearing the clipboard now properly trashes the password in process memory, as well as emptying the clipboard. Bugfix [760656] Passing a filename that contains spaces via the command line now works correctly. Previously, the quotation marks confused PasswordSafe. Bugfix [777367] The Edit/View Item dialog box's Help button now works correctly. RFE [772212] Pressing Cancel when prompted for the password when unminimizing the application no longer exits the program. (Would happen only if "Lock password database on minimize" is set) Bugfix [769820] Pressing Cancel in the Clear Clipboard dialog box will now prevent the passowrd from being copied to the clipboard. Previously, it was equivalent to pressing OK. (Would happen only if "Confirm item copy to clipboard" was selected) RFE [768870] Added a manifest file for native Windows XP theme support. RFE [754790] The option "Clear the clipboard when minimized" has been changed to "Clear clipboard upon minimize or exit". Previously, the clipboard was unconditionally cleared upon exit. This allows the user to change the behaviour. The PocketPC release incorporates the fixes of the Windows release. In addition, the endianness of devices built around the SH3 CPU is now correct. Thanks to Gregg and Karlo for their work fixing the bugs, and to Kevin for building the PocketPC versions. Great! This is the kind of bug that I like - well defined, trivial to fix. (Now if only I can find someone who's willing to update the help files...) Hi Dr. Weis, Thanks for pointing out the bug. I assume you meant the "pencil" or Edit button, which opens an entry for viewing or editing. The "+" button adds a new entry. This will be fixed in a future release. In the meantime, there's a workaround you can use in 1.92b: In Manage->Options... choose the Misc tab, and check the "Save database immediately after Edit or Add". This will prevent the "save changes" dialog box from appearing upon exit. Hi there, I'm a completely satisfied Password Safe user. I used version 1.7 for a long time. I downloaded the1.92b version today. I dowloaded the new version because of an annoyance I've had with version 1.7, hoping it was a bug in the program. The problem appears also in the new version: When I click on the + button to view an entry in my database file and then click OK to close the window and than I close the main window, I'm asked to Save the changes I made. The program closes properly if I click the No buton or the OK button. Since I've made no changes to the database, the database file is not changed. I admit that this is a small annoyance but maybe it can be fixed somehow. I'm using Windows ME. Thanks in advace, Dr. A Weis . + * * /\ . Hi, I'm using (and a lot of collegues also) PWsafe extensively. In different versions, on different PC's, as people are used to. BUT, the the Passwordsafe database stayed always the same (since 1.7.0, afaik). Getting incompatible is not such a good idea! Is there perhaps some way of having the new feature (3 passwords) AND keeping the old passwordstructure for the database. It would be a great help in introducing this new feature while maintaining compatibility! You could make the 3 Password-feature easily with the actual version by editing the title e.g XXXXX-1 with PW-1, XXXXX-2 with PW-2 and XXXXX-3 with PW-3. regards Karlo Van der Gucht -----Urspr?ngliche Nachricht----- Von: Rony Shapiro [mailto:ro...@gm...] Gesendet: Freitag, 30. MessageEelco, Do you have the passwordsafe button in the taskbar after you entered the password, or does the application just exit after the password is entered? Do you know how to use the "regedit" utility? If so, please look at the My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Counterpane Systems\Password Safe key, and write me the data for the top, bottom, left and right subkeys. My guess is that these got "garbage" values somehow, causing the main window to be "displayed" off-screen. Rony -----Original Message----- From: pas...@li... Thanks for writing. I started using PasswordSafe since version 1.92. The problem is that I can log in, but then I don't get to see the list with username/passwords. PasswordSafe gives me a clear message when I log in with a wrong password. It is possible to create a new db, but I again can't see the actual program with username/password combinations. I can't find any logging with errors what soever. Maybe I should try to open the program from a different computer? Regards, Eelco van Kuik -----Original Message----- From: pas...@li... Hi, Release 1.92a is available for download. This is a maintenance release, fixing an old bug regarding multilingual support, and a problem with persistence of the "Show password in display list" option. Thanks to Gregg for fixing the multilingual issue, and to Alex Fung for testing the fix on his machine. You should probably upgrade only if you need to have these issues addressed. No other features have been added. Hi, This release has some nice new features: [736391] Whan a new master passphrase ("Safe Combination") is defined, the user is warned if it is cryptographically weak. [732609] The Options dialog box has been tabified, hopefully making it less intimidating for non-technical users. [505540] It is now possible to change the default length of generated passwords. [541928] It is now possible to specify the "Password Policy" via the Options dialog box, i.e., only uppercase, with/without digits, etc. Also, the annoying "permanently minimized if closed while minimized." bug has been fixed. The md5sums of the packages are: 8b2e6e6588c4e14c8174f6f311c8c75b pwsafe-1.9.2-bin.zip 6b4ef773fa0d9bbdd41461d4abb2a486 pwsafe-1.9.2-src.zip Credits: In addition to the usual suspects (https://sourceforge.net/project/memberlist.php?group_id=41019), Karel (Karlo) Van der Gucht contributed some GUI improvements and work on the password policies. Enjoy, Rony mailto:ro...@us... |

Hi, This is to announce the availabilty of a new and (hopefully) improved version of Passwordsafe. The version is 1.91, and it's currently a beta release. We hope to make it non-beta in a couple of weeks, based on the feedback we receive from users. I've managed to mess up the release name - In the File List section of the project's web pages it's listed as 1.9.1a, whereas the downloadable zip files are named -1.91-. My apologies for the confusion - I promise to improve in future releases... In any case, the md5 checksums of the packages are: 2bc437b1e09f30a0985b747794d74ea7 pwsafe-1.91-bin.zip 0291cb5fdfb5f0ff3675e1d623ddb06b pwsafe-1.91-src.zip It's been fun getting this release together. Thanks to all the developers who pitched in: Andrew Mullican, Edward Quackenbush, Gregg Conklin, and Graham Ullrich. Enjoy, Rony mailto:ro...@us... |

Hi Karel, That was my first thought too: I was thinking of diving into the code with a debugger and manually changing the allocation to the correct value. On second thought, however, if the length decrypts to garbage, chances are that the whole file is corrupt. Anyway, reading the length and allocating accordingly is done in _readcbc() in Util.cpp: unsigned char* wholething = new unsigned char[BlockLength]; Rony -----Original Message----- From: Van der Gucht Karel ICM CP RD VD 2 [mailto:kar...@si...] Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2003 6:43 AM To: 'Rony Shapiro'; 'hl...@tr...' Subject: AW: [Passwordsafe-users] "out of memory" error! Hi, This is Karel Van der Gucht Is there any chance to limit the amount of memory allocated (e.g. twice the amount of the file), to get a chance of loading and "resaving" the .dat file, if the calculated amount of memory is out of reasonable scale? This could help Hua in restoring his .dat file We are using a version 1.9.4 (derived from 1.9.0, with an enhanced password generating feature). Hua: I did send you the file 1.9.4, so you can test if this one is working. BUT: I'm pretty shure it won't, because I didn't change anything about reading and storing files. After all, lets give it a try. Rony: do you know the area in the code of pwsafe where this allocation is done, so I could give it a try on my suggestion. mit freundlichen Grüßen, kind regards Karlo Van der Gucht ----------------------------------------- Siemens AG ICM CP RD VD 2 Grillparzerstr 10 81675 München Postfach 801707 Telefon : +49 89 722 41399 FAX : +49 89 722 913523 E-Mail : Kar...@si... ----------------------------------------- -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- Von: Rony Shapiro [mailto:ro...@gm...] Gesendet: Mittwoch, 9. Here's why: One of the first things that's encrypted in the file is the length of the actual data. This is read and decrypted, and memory is allocated accordingly. If this is somehow corrupted, then a HUGE amount of memory is (trying to be) allocated. Thanks for your info Rony, I am just wondering how can I restore this corrupted file? I did not backup this file. Does version 1.9 or above solve this problem. The strange thing is that only this particular dat file got corrupted whereas the rest are fine. Do you know what might the causes are that corrupt the dat file? Thanks.
