Ah, that's better! It indeed seems that the file in question got corrupted. Here's why: One of the first things that's encrypted in the file is the length of the actual data. This is read and decrypted, and memory is allocated accordingly. If this is somehow corrupted, then a HUGE amount of memory is (trying to be) allocated. Here are my answers for your questions: 1. version 1.7 2. everytime for that particular file. 3. 1KB 4. only that particular file, other files are fine. 5. only 3 entries. 6. I am using Window 2K Pro, 512MB ram. I have other large applications but are fine. My guess is that particular file might get somehow corrupted. But I donot know how. I appreciate your help on this. Hi Will, This is new to me. Let's try to gather some more information: - What version of passwordsafe are you using? - How often is "sometimes"? - How large is the .dat file (in kilobytes)? - Does this happen with any .dat file, or only a particular one? - How many entries are there in the file? - What about the computer you're using? What OS, how much memory? are other applications giving you trouble as well? Rony -----Original Message----- From: pas...@li... Hello. I don't know if this is the proper way to make a bug report to PassSafe (can't I just login somewhere with my browser??). Anyway, I downloaded the binary distribution of 1.90. I am using Win98. The problem is that it will not save any database I create. Clicking the Save icon, or using the File->SaveAs or File->Save items results in nothing - i.e. no dialog box pops up for me to enter a saveas name. If I make some entries and then try to exit from the program, it nicely asks me if I want to save the database. I say OK but again, no dialog box appears. I thought perhaps the dialog might be hidden behind some other window, but this is not the case. It just doesn't come up. Only way to get out it to say NO, which, of course, causes me to lose all my entries. Can't imagine what the problem can be, since I see other people say it works OK. Not for me :-( Thanks, Rich |

A reasonable assumption, Nigel. It is, in fact, designed to work just that way. And it *does* work that way on my system. If I start the program, and click "Open existing database...", I get the standard Windows File Open dialog. I guess this is why we have beta tests. <g> Okay, first questions for you (Nigel P.) 1. Are you running the v1.90 binary distribution that I posted over the weekend, or did you build from source? 2. What's your OS (Win95, NT, 2000, XP?) 3. If you are comfortable with RegEdit, look in: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Counterpane Systems/Password Safe and let me know what's there. Next, questions for others who may be lurking... 1. Anybody else try out the beta? (Yes, I know -- I didn't announce it yet. It's there. I'll formally announce it sometime this week, I promise.) 2. Maybe I'm missing something but I was expecting this button to work in much the same way as the old Switch database button? The only way I seem to be able to open a database is by entering the correct password for the currently selected one and clicking OK. If I click Open existing database nothing seems to happen, apart that is password safe just closes gracefully. |

I was excited to see that Password Safe is getting new attention. It's an excellent program and well worth the investment of time and porting efforts -- kudos to the new folks working on it! I reviewed the "to do" list for version 2 and initially looked for a place to pass along this observation, and as nearly as I can tell this is the best forum for it. Item 32 indicates a priority 3 goal to "specify a hot key that can be used to pop up Password Safe". Possibly this is needed outside of Windows, but Windows already provides ample facility for specifying hotkeys via shortcuts. The only adjustment needed may be a facility in the coming Installer that will prompt for that hotkey and then set the shortcut accordingly, since lots of people are likely unfamiliar with the implementation of Windows hotkeys. At any rate, thanks for continuing to work on an extremely useful program. Best wishes to you! |

UPFRONT APOLOGY -- You may get more than one copy of this email. I'm posting it to three mailing lists, and BCC'ing to a number of addresses. We'll get it all sorted out soon enough. <g> Now that that's out of the way... Thanks to everyone for their messages of congratulations/condolences on my appointment as maintainer of PasswordSafe. You are receiving this message either because you subscribed to one of the mailing lists I've set up, or because I'm inviting you to do so. PasswordSafe from this point forward will be, I hope, a collaborative effort, and mailing lists are a nice public way of hashing out where the development effort should go. The mailing lists are pretty much what you would expect: passwordsafe-devel -- subscribe to this one if you want to do some coding or documentation passwordsafe-users -- subscribe to this one if you want to submit bug reports, feature requests, or complain about the user interface passwordsafe-announce -- subscribe to this one if you only want to know when the next version is released So subscribe if you haven't yet, and lets get rolling.
