Hi Rony, A problem I occasionally encounter is that some un-enlightened organisations demand insecure passwords, namely upper and lower case only, perhaps sometimes with digits. It would be helpful if PasswordSafe were to permit a variation on the password policy from within the Edit/Create password dialogue - obviously on a per password basis only. Presently one has to back out of the editing dialogue and change the entire policy via Manage>Options>Password Policy and then restore it after creating a new entry. Just a thought. Best wishes. Hi David, perhaps this helps a little bit. Whilst right clicking with the mouse on an entry you get "Display subset of Password" Could this help you, at least for a part? Kind regards Karlo Van der Gucht -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- Von: David Earl [mailto:da...@fr...] Gesendet: Donnerstag, 19. Februar 2009 11:41 An: pas...@li... Betreff: [Passwordsafe-users] Random order passwords [Apologies if this has been said before, only just subscribed...] I'm finding an increasing number of sites (especially finance related ones) where the authentication is some subset of the characters from the password, often in a random order. Sometimes you type into these (and in some cases it moves automatically tot he next field, and sometimes you have to tab or click to move on), sometimes select the digit from a pop up menu. These are fiendish to use from Password Safe (not its fault, of course: unless you have it memorised, its hard from anywhere), and you have to reveal the password on the screen and count along it to get the character you want, which isn't ideal. Secondly, most such sites want further authentication, either on the same screen or a subsequent one. Often the answer is in response to a randomly chose one of number of questions, so in a sense it is like the random digits - you need to be able to say which password depending on what the site is asking for. It would be really nice if Password Safe supported this. Here's my suggestion of something which would be quick to work through to satisfy what the site is asking for... Firstly, a variation on autotype, where it pops up a dialog into which you type e.g. "354<enter>" if the site is demanding the third fifth and fourth characters. The autotype pattern would also need to accommodate an option for selecting the character from a menu as well as typing it. Secondly, maybe an "extended autotype" could offer the questions on a menu and supply the answers. Obviously the pattern would need to cover this too, and it needs the entry to store an arbitrary number of passwords along with identifying phrases (grouped, in the sense that the site will ask for only one password in any group, but wants one from each group). So, for example, say the site asks for digits 3, 5 and 4 plus "which school did you first attend", you can click the "extended autotype" button, type 354<tab><down arrow.../select off pop up with mouse><enter> and it will enter the required info (down arrow is the standard k/b shortcut for selecting from the pop up and you do it until you see the question being asked; actually typing the first letter would work too if its a standard windows widget). In summary: - multiple passwords with user supplied identifiers, in groups - extended autotype where you choose the combination of passwords (in an efficient way) - autotype patterns to support these. Hi David, Thanks for writing. Your first suggestion is already supported (without autotype) since release 3.15: Just right-click on an entry and select 'Display subset of password". You can also add this to PasswordSafe's toolbar via View->Customize main toolbar. I'll try to mention this prominently in the help file. As to support for secondary questions, you can currently use the Notes field for this information, but let me think about this a bit... Yes, that helps with part of the problem, though not autotyping, of course, or multiple or question and answer type passwords. I thought some thought would already have gone into this. I can see why the separators are there (in case there are more than ten characters), but I'd have thought that's quite unusual for this kind of password. Perhaps treat unseparated digits as if they were separated if the password has fewer than 10 characters (that's not ambiguous AFAICS). Hi, This is to announce the release of PasswordSafe version 3.16. The main new feature of this release is non-English support: Specifically, German is now fully supported, and Polish, Spanish and Swedish are partially supported. In addition, some annoying bugs have been fixed, and some features have been added or improved upon. Thanks to Karlo Van der Gucht for his work on non-English support, to DK for his work on this release, and to all the folks who reported bugs and tested prelimenary versions of this release. Bugs fixed in 3.16 [2529736] Validate now corrects all Password History errors [2509817] Control characters no longer sent via Autotype. [2481370] Can now create shortcut by right-mouse down dragging. [] Can now process filters (within the database or imported) based on 'username' field ("user" in the XML file). [2423397] Sorting direction database preference was not being saved in the database. See "Changes to Existing Features" below. Changes to Existing Features in 3.16 [Open Discussion] Ctrl+F no longer toggles the Find Toolbar but shows it if not currently visible. [2423397] Changes to preferences stored in the database are no longer silently saved in the database (including any changes to any entries). A new flag is shown in the Status Bar to indicate the preferences have been changed and the user can decide to save these, or not, when closing the database, directly or when ending the application. [] Support interoperability with tools that access edit control text by setting PWS_PW_MODE environment variable to "NORMAL". New Features for 3.16 [2509821] Support Group (\g), Title (\i) and Notes (\o, \onnn) fields via Autotype. [] Installation program now offers German as well as English installation instructions, as well as installing German language support. The framework is easily extended to other languages. [2450841] The user can use the DragBar to drag and drop the group name when a group is selected. Pressing the Ctrl key while dragging the group, when a group or entry is selected, will only copy the immediate parent group. Standard behaviour is to copy all groups up to the root of the database with dots between successive group names. [2450827] Add a new menu item (on Edit Menu or right-click context menu) to go to the corresponding base entry of an Alias or Shortcut. As part of this change, only relevant items are shown on the Edit menu depending on the current selected item (group or normal, shortcut base, alias base, alias or shortcut entry). [2425045] During Edit, if the entry has been changed and the user presses the Cancel button, they are asked to confirm losing their changes. [2415952] The currrent display status of the Find Toolbar is remembered at application close and, if visible, it is will be shown the next time the application is started. The U3 version will be available soon from http://software.u3.com/Product_Details.aspx?productId=294&Selection=7 (Owners of previous releases of the U3 version are invited to contact me for an update) The release may be downloaded from https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=41019&package_id=3316 9&release_id=660483 or http://p.sf.net/passwordsafe/pwsafe-3_16 SHA-1 checksums: 4014d109adca0138e761b28057388512fdb6767d *pwsafe-3.16.exe 2f57aa911736712433a385f6b21235bfc2b65c7e *pwsafe-3.16.msi 6668499b6748a4f7e0d72dd1f0ee603a6868d073 *pwsafe-3.16-bin.zip 452616bc0a03a98b1b6467fd8d5e655499d83882 *pwsafe-3.16-src.zip Note that this release also includes PGP/GPG signature files of the respective packages. Indeed; especially a browser-pop-up login screen (HTTP basic auth) rather than an HTML page. That made me suspicious at first whether apps.sourceforge.net was a bona fide SF host, or simply the subdomain belonging to one of the many projects hosted there -- in the latter case, I obviously wouldn't want to enter my password into their page. I know that there are alternatives that claim compatibility, but the "real thing" would inspire more confidence. Peter HB |

Hi, [You're receiving this message from the PasswordSafe users or developers list, to which you're subscribed. To unsubscribe, follow the link at the end of this post] Until now, PasswordSafe has supported Windows 98. Given that this requires some effort on our part, we're considering dropping support for Windows 98 on newer version of PasswordSafe, so that we can focus our efforts on other improvements. However, if enough people are still using this, we'll continue supporting it. Please take a minute to let us know which OS you're using: https://apps.sourceforge.net/limesurvey/passwordsafe/index.php?sid=56366&lang=en The survey is totally anonymous. Thanks, Rony |

Hi, This is to announce the release of PasswordSafe version 3.15. This is a minor release - some annoying bugs have been fixed, some features have been added or improved upon. Thanks to DK for his work on this release, and to all the folks who reported bugs and tested the Beta version of this release. In addition to this release, we're releasing a new package of PasswordSafe that supports the YubiKey authentication token (http://yubico.com/products/yubikey/). See the end of this annoucement for more details. Bugs fixed in 3.15 [2407346] "Open Another" and "Create New" actions in "Incorrect Passkey" dialog box working again. [2407325] Prevent creation of a group name with '.', which confuses PasswordSafe. [2407072] Can now tab to read-only checkbox in password entry form via File->Open or recently used list. [2269930] Track write permission of file in opening dialog: If the user chooses a file with different permission than the original, then the r-o status is updated accordingly. [2142691] Better support for Japanese text. [2113261] No longer crashes when opening write-protected database. [2102624] Can now change a normal entry into an alias or an alias' base entry into an alias of another entry taking its aliases with it. [2101656] Incorrect Notes field behaviour when using scroll bars corrected. [2100916] Correct colouring of the Dragbar icons after changing selected entry. [2100429] Handle invalid time field in database gracefully. Thanks to David B. Martin for his help in tracking this down. [2096504] All user set fields are now checked when merging databases. [2096164] -h, -u and -g command line functionality restored. [2088540] Showing Dragbar is now independent of displaying the Toolbar. [2085103] New database can no longer be created as R/O. [2085089] Database field in "Safe combination Entry" dialog no longer loses focus to passphrase field after each character change. [] Correct display of tree items on restore from minimize when 'X' button used to minimize. [] Ensure XML Import correctly processes normal entries with a password field that is in alias or shortcut form. New Features for 3.15 [] Implement the CF_CLIPBOARD_VIEWER_IGNORE feature supported by some Clipboard Viewers. [] Add feature to display a subset of the password. This is useful for websites that need different particular characters from a password at each login. To access this, select an item, right-click and choose Display Subset of Password. [2203438] Remove "[alt]", "[ssh]" and "{alt}" special keywords from URL when copying to the clipboard. [2144489] Click on the text next to edit fields to copy the field to the clipboard. YubiKey Authentication Support: YubiKey (http://yubico.com/products/yubikey/) is a USB authentication device that sends a different authentication key each time it's activated. This provides a convenient alternative to constantly typing in a passphrase for heavy users of PasswordSafe. To use, just "associate" your YubiKey with your PasswordSafe datasbase, using the new Manage->YubiKey dialog. For more details, please refer to the online help. Currently, support for this device is implemented in a separate PasswordSafe package, 3.15Y. Your feedback will determine if and how this will be merged into the main product. The YubiKey version may be downloaded from: https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=41019&package_id=3027 75&release_id=647161 or http://preview.tinyurl.com/5s3qf2 SHA-1 checksums for YubiKey version: b8b7e7a6060dac55b523518c09f385319c7a8e5a *pwsafe-3.15Y.exe b1c54b412a19b0bf95ece3ebd3d00e7e5bda7da5 *pwsafe-3.15Y-bin.zip cc014ee1cc7d849a0d20a7811d2c531d8d8b5953 *pwsafe-3.15Y-src.zip Enjoy, Rony |

Hi, We've been working on a couple of versions of PasswordSafe, and as the changes "under the hood" have been substantial, I'd be happy if any users and/or developers would give these a spin before I formally release them, hopefully in acouple of weeks: 1. Version 3.15Beta: This release has many changes to support compilation on other platforms, most notably Linux/Unix. While I've tested it quite a bit, the more people who can try it out under different version of Windows, the better the chance of catching any bugs I may have inadvertantly introduced in the process. Other than the above change, several bug have been fixed, and a couple of new features added, the most notable being support for sites that require you to type a subset of your password (e.g., the first, fourth, seventh and ninth character). See the release notes for more details. This version may be dowloaded from: http://passwordsafe.sf.net/tmp/3.15Beta/pwsafe-3.15Beta-bin.zip or http://passwordsafe.sf.net/tmp/3.15Beta/pwsafe-3.15Beta.exe (add .sig to the above to download the gpg signature files) 2. Version 3.14.3Y: This version supports authentication via the YubiKey authentication token (http://yubico.com/products/yubikey/). Specifically, you can use a YubiKey token to unlock a pwsafe database (you still need to input your master passphrase to open the database, but after that you can optionally use the YubiKey to unlock a minimized database instead of entering your Passphrase). Other than that, it's fully compatible with the other versions. To learn more about this feature, look up "YubiKey" in the online help. This version may be downloaded from: http://passwordsafe.sf.net/tmp/3.14.3Y/pwsafe-3.14.3Y-bin.zip or http://passwordsafe.sf.net/tmp/3.14.3Y/pwsafe-3.14.3Y.exe (add .sig to the above to download the gpg signature files) Thanks, Rony |

[1850271] Save after Compare no longer corrupts database. [1849881, 700973] Pressing a character in the List view will now jump to the next entry with text beginning with that character in the second column. This is a change from previous behaviour, which only looked in the first column, now occupied by the icon. [1849830] Help now works properly for Manage->Option, displaying the relevant topic. [1849818] Browse-to no longer falsely reports "failed to browse to URL". [1843631] "Browse to Icon" now correctly shown using new Toolbar. [1841525] Increasing the number of passwords saved no longer deletes the existing Password History. [1833609, 1535341, 1502036] Fully support multiple monitors. [1749268] Mouse clicks on tree view plus/minus boxes now works correctly. [1670193] Better Vista support (Allow use of Windows Common Controls V6 with Vista). [1478022] User no longer needs to save a restored database before it can be exported. [1440693] Fix standard keyboard access to context menu (Shift+F10). [] Allow Expand/Collapse for read-only databases via toolbar. [] Set focus to new view on switching between Tree <-> List views. [] Update toolbar when view changes (List <-> Tree). [] Set title bar text when opening a database at startup. [] Allow List view to process all characters e.g. Page Up/Down, Home, End, Arrows etc. [] Fix program crash on clicking CompareResults dialog header. [] Toolbar Save button correctly enabled after drag & drop operations. Changes to Existing Features in 3.12 [1885710, 1852862] When re-showing the Find toolbar, any existing search argument is selected to allow easier deletion and modification. [1865009] Give user advanced option to ignore whitespace-only differences during compare. [1846688, 1224373] When generating a new password, it is no longer displayed in a separate window for approval. If you want to generate another password, just click on Generate again. If you want to revert to the existing password when editing an entry, just click on Cancel. [1841221] During drag & drop, a 1.5 scond delay was introduced before expanding a group that the cursor "hovers" upon. [] New disabled buttons for New Toolbar. [1838738] Implement minimum lengths of types of characters in the password policy i.e. 3 uppercase + 2 lowercase + 1 digit etc. Feature is incompatible with 'pronounceable' or 'easy-to-read' passwords. [] Implement individual password policy for entries that will override the current database policy. User can still override the individual policy or the database policy. Hi, This is to announce the release of PasswordSafe version 3.11. This is a minor release - some annoying bugs have been fixed, some minor features have been added or improved upon. Thanks to DK his work on this release, and to all the folks who reported bugs and tested pre-release versions. New Features for 3.11 [1765240] Add "Clear clipboard" item to tray icon context menu. [1727768] Copy URL to clipboard added to menus (Ctrl+Alt+L). [1526169] Add more shortcut keys to add/edit dialog. [] Give user access to Reports from View menu (only in the same directory as current open database), since more information is being written there. [] Give user access to the Compare report from the Compare results dialog. [] New email action allowed in URL field. To be treated as email, the data must be prefixed by the characters "mailto:". The data following this corresponds to the '[mailto:]' standard RFC2368. For example: "in...@ex...?subject=PasswordSafe". [] Main toolbar can be customized via MS's standard dialog via right click on this toolbar. [] Several entries may be "aliased" to a single entry, sharing its password. See online help for details. Changes to Existing Features in 3.11 [1815192] The Find function has been re-implemented as a toolbar at bottom of application. Button shortcuts: Ctrl+Alt+A = Advanced find, Ctrl+Alt+S = toggle case Sensitivity, Ctrl+Alt+C = Clear find text [1790342] Replaced additional key shortcuts for ExpandAll and CollapseAll by toolbar buttons. Now there is only one set (the original) of key shortcuts + toolbar buttons. [1756385] The color of the application's system tray icon (when the application is started and when there's no open database) is now user configurable, fixing a visibility problem under Vista. [] Saved string preferences within the database header will not be delimited by a doublequote if this character is part of the string variable. An arbitrary symbol type character will be used in this case. If one cannot be found, the string preference will not be saved in the database. Bugs fixed in 3.11 ================== [1806201] Non-unique uuids in database now handled correctly. [1799523] Fix PWS taking a long time saving after XML Import into new DB. Users who have imported XML into a new database should export again and re-import after deleting the <NumberHashIterations>...</NumberHashIterations> entry from the XML file. [1798588] Users can now change an entry's password with passwords hidden. [1793224] Copy for expired passwords no longer causes PWS crashes. [1791482] All preferences stored within the database are now exported/imported via XML. [1790286] All String preferences stored within the database are now correctly read during database open. [1789983] List View now correct after Group removed. [1726181] Save of a new database is no longer required to export entries. [1664219] Autotype now works correctly with '@' in German keyboards, and non-English keyboards in general. [1313440] Can new add/edit entries with long group names. Hi, This is to announce the release of PasswordSafe version 3.10. This is a minor release - some annoying bugs have been fixed, some minor features have been added or improved upon. Thanks to DK his work on this release, and to xenophonf for making the msi package possible. Bugs fixed in 3.10 [1757110] Toolbar now correctly disables images according to type of entry selected and if URL is populated [1758025, 1759364] '-s' option now works correctly [] Window's position and size now updated correctly [1768822] Manage->Options->Password History 'apply' works again. [] Lock timeout after manual lock no longer saves empty database. [1754566] State of tree view is now persistent across minimize, lock & save. [1771357] Timeout timer now reset in all dialog boxes - PasswordSafe will no longer minimize in the middle of work with an open dialog box. [1754054, 1754611, 1740704] Items are now fully sorted when "put groups first in display tree" selected. [1757298, 1774428, 1609474] Merge no longer loses data [] Ensure group/title/user combination is unique during text import. [] During Add/Edit, fields containing only whitespace characters (space, horzontal tab, vertical tab, carriage return, new line and form feed) are considered empty fields. [1751465] Fields containing only whitespace or whitespace between double quotes are now treated as empty during plain text import. [1783905] Read-only status maintained after unlocking a database. [1782407] Export to text file now includes "title", if selected. [1734220] XML Export line of Notes fields containing CRLF now works correctly. The default delimeter has been made the same as for Export to a Text file [1632634] Compare no longer changes database settings when the databases are identical. New Features for 3.10 [1752896] Add ability to edit an entry's notes field using user's default text editor via right click on Notes field. [1750010] Drag&Drop between databases now supported. [1517048] PasswordSafe can now be installed as an msi package (Windows installer). This allows site administrators to 'push' PasswordSafe to client machines with group policy. Thanks to xenophonf. [1751484] Errors detected while merging or importing a text file are now described in detail in a log file. The latter, I'm afraid. Rony _____ From: pas...@li... [mailto:pas...@li...] On Behalf Of Wayne Straw Sent: Saturday, August 18, 2007 10:03 PM To: pas...@li... Subject: [Passwordsafe-users] Sort order in nested tree mode Is there a way to set the sort order in nested tree mode? I've got Safe 3.09 set to put groups first. In all the groups, the actual items under each group seem to be sorted just by the order they were input instead of alphabetically. Is this a setting I'm missing or a bug? |

That's what it seems like I'm getting. I assumed the order was the order they were added, but I could be wrong. All I know is the top level is alphabetized and all the other levels are not. So, I assume it's a bug then... > -----Original Message----- > From: Jim Showalter [mailto:jsh...@gm...] > Sent: Saturday, August 18, 2007 18:12 > To: Wayne Straw > Cc: pas...@li... > Subject: Re: [Passwordsafe-users] Sort order in nested tree mode > > Wayne Straw wrote: > > Is there a way to set the sort order in nested tree mode? If you uncheck "Put groups first in display tree", Password Safe displays entries in alphabetical order. But for some reason, when this setting is checked, the entries seem to be be randomized, Mine, at least, are not in the order in which they were added to the database. jim -- Treating your users as co-developers is your least-hassle route to rapid code improvement and effective debugging. - Eric S. The last delay in your string is "\d999". This causes the delay between the appearance of each and every character of password and <some other auth info> to take about 3 seconds. :) So try following your three groups of "\d999"s with something short, like "\d60". jim -- What is the difference between a car salesman and a computer salesman?
