Hi Rony,

A problem I occasionally encounter is that some un-enlightened 
organisations demand insecure passwords, namely upper and lower case 
only, perhaps sometimes with digits.

It would be helpful if PasswordSafe were to permit a variation on the 
password policy from within the Edit/Create password dialogue - 
obviously on a per password basis only. Presently one has to back out of 
the editing dialogue and change the entire policy via 
Manage>Options>Password Policy and then restore it after creating a new 
entry.

Just a thought.

perhaps this helps a little bit. Whilst right clicking with the mouse on an
entry you get "Display subset of Password"

Could this help you, at least for a part?

It would be really nice if Password Safe supported this. Here's my 
suggestion of something which would be quick to work through to satisfy 
what the site is asking for...

fourth characters. The autotype pattern would also need to accommodate 
an option for selecting the character from a menu as well as typing it.

menu and supply the answers. Obviously the pattern would need to cover 
this too, and it needs the entry to store an arbitrary number of 
passwords along with identifying phrases (grouped, in the sense that the 
site will ask for only one password in any group, but wants one from

school did you first attend", you can click the "extended autotype" 
button, type
    354<tab><down arrow.../select off pop up with mouse><enter>
and it will enter the required info (down arrow is the standard k/b

its a standard windows widget).

In summary:
- multiple passwords with user supplied identifiers, in groups
- extended autotype where you choose the combination of passwords (in an 
efficient way)
- autotype patterns to support these.

Hi David,

Thanks for writing.

Your first suggestion is already supported (without autotype) since release
3.15: Just right-click on an entry and select 'Display subset of password".
You can also add this to PasswordSafe's toolbar via View->Customize main
toolbar. I'll try to mention this prominently in the help file.

As to support for secondary questions, you can currently use the Notes field
for this information, but let me think about this a bit...

Yes, that helps with part of the problem, though not autotyping, of 
course, or multiple or question and answer type passwords. I thought 
some thought would already have gone into this.

I can see why the separators are there (in case there are more than ten 
characters), but I'd have thought that's quite unusual for this kind of 
password. Perhaps treat unseparated digits as if they were separated if 
the password has fewer than 10 characters (that's not ambiguous AFAICS).

[Passwordsafe-users] Announcing PasswordSafe 3.16

This is to announce the release of PasswordSafe version 3.16.

The main new feature of this release is non-English support: Specifically,
German is now fully supported, and Polish, Spanish and Swedish are partially
supported. In addition, some annoying bugs have been fixed, and some
features have been added or improved upon.  
Thanks to Karlo  Van der Gucht for his work on non-English support, to DK
for his work on this release, and to all the folks who reported bugs and
tested prelimenary versions of this release.

Bugs fixed in 3.16
[2529736] Validate now corrects all Password History errors
[2509817] Control characters no longer sent via Autotype.
[2481370] Can now create shortcut by right-mouse down dragging.
[] Can now process filters (within the database or imported) based on
'username' field ("user" in the XML file).
[2423397] Sorting direction database preference was not being saved in the
database.  See "Changes to Existing Features" below.

Changes to Existing Features in 3.16
[Open Discussion] Ctrl+F no longer toggles the Find Toolbar but shows it if
not currently visible.
[2423397] Changes to preferences stored in the database are no longer
silently saved in the database (including any changes to any entries). A new
flag is shown in the Status Bar to indicate the preferences have been
changed and the user can decide to save these, or not, when closing the
database, directly or when ending the application.

setting PWS_PW_MODE environment variable to "NORMAL".

New Features for 3.16
[2509821] Support Group (\g), Title (\i) and Notes (\o, \onnn) fields via
Autotype.
[] Installation program now offers German as well as English installation
instructions, as well as installing German language support. The framework
is easily extended to other languages.
[2450841] The user can use the DragBar to drag and drop the group name when
a group is selected. Pressing the Ctrl key while dragging the group, when a
group or entry is selected, will only copy the immediate parent group.
Standard behaviour is to copy all groups up to the root of the database with
dots between successive group names.
[2450827] Add a new menu item (on Edit Menu or right-click context menu) to
go to the corresponding base entry of an Alias or Shortcut. As part of this
change, only relevant items are shown on the Edit menu depending on the
current selected item (group or normal, shortcut base, alias base, alias or
shortcut entry).
[2425045] During Edit, if the entry has been changed and the user presses
the Cancel button, they are asked to confirm losing their changes.
[2415952] The currrent display status of the Find Toolbar is remembered at
application close and, if visible, it is will be shown the next time the
application is started.

Indeed; especially a browser-pop-up login screen (HTTP basic auth)
rather than an HTML page. That made me suspicious at first whether
apps.sourceforge.net was a bona fide SF host, or simply the subdomain
belonging to one of the many projects hosted there -- in the latter
case, I obviously wouldn't want to enter my password into their page.

It would also help if it was not behind a login screen ;-). That 
prevented me from ticking Win2K and Win XP.

For my 2 penn'orth, a port to Linux would be very welcome. I know that
there are alternatives that claim compatibility, but the "real thing"
would inspire more confidence.

YubiKey Authentication Support:
YubiKey (http://yubico.com/products/yubikey/) is a USB authentication device
that sends a different authentication key each time it's activated. This
provides a convenient alternative to constantly typing in a passphrase for
heavy users of PasswordSafe. To use, just "associate" your YubiKey with your
PasswordSafe datasbase, using the new Manage->YubiKey dialog. For more
details, please refer to the online help. 
Currently, support for this device is implemented in a separate PasswordSafe
package, 3.15Y. Your feedback will determine if and how this will be merged
into the main product.

[Passwordsafe-users] Call for testers - two pre-release versions of PasswordSafe

We've been working on a couple of versions of PasswordSafe, and as the
changes "under the hood" have been substantial, I'd be happy if any users
and/or developers would give these a spin before I formally release them,
hopefully in  acouple of weeks:

1. Version 3.15Beta: This release has many changes to support compilation on
other platforms, most notably Linux/Unix. While I've tested it quite a bit,
the more people who can try it out under different version of Windows, the
better the chance of catching any bugs I may have inadvertantly introduced
in the process. Other than the above change, several bug have been fixed,
and a couple of new features added, the most notable being support for sites
that require you to type a subset of your password (e.g., the first, fourth,
seventh and ninth character). See the release notes for more details.

entering your Passphrase). Other than that, it's fully compatible with the

online help.

[1941360] Rename with F2 now enables Save button.
[1940311] Password Policy now ignores length requirements if not applicable.
[1938057] Non-Latin text now correctly exported to plain text file.
[1926678, 1937293,1939294] Reduce GDI object leaks that cause display
problems during hibernation, screen locking and remote access.
[1914433] It is now possible to view the password policy set for an
individual entry, by shift-clicking on the checked Override Policy checkbox.
A tooltip explaining this is shown when relevant.

in a separate window for approval. If you want to generate another password,
just click on Generate again. If you want to revert to the existing password
when editing an entry, just click on Cancel.
[1841221] During drag & drop, a 1.5 scond delay was introduced before
expanding a group that the cursor "hovers" upon.

policy i.e. 3 uppercase + 2 lowercase + 1 digit etc.  Feature
is incompatible with 'pronounceable' or 'easy-to-read' passwords.
[] Implement individual password policy for entries that will override the
current database policy.  User can still override the individual policy or
the database policy.
[] An entry may have multiple references, or "shortcuts" to it, similar to
Windows' shortcuts. These may be thought of as "synonyms" of the entry. To
create a shortcut, drag an entry with the right mouse button pressed.
[] Graphics added to menus.
[] New password generation option: Pronounceable passwords. Thanks to Tom
Van Vleck, Morrie Gasser, and Dan Edwards.

[Passwordsafe-users] Announcing PasswordSafe 3.11.1

Unfortunately, the recently announced version 3.11 of Password Safe had a
couple of  non-trivial problems with it. This is to announce release 3.11.1,
which addresses those problems. Thanks to a_m_briggs, sborman, and others
for pointing out the problems and helping in tracking them down. My
apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Bugs fixed in 3.11.1

* No longer crashes when pulling down Edit menu in List view with no entry
selected.
[1837534] Autotype handles tab correctly when typing to Internet Explorer.
* Copy Username and Copy Password new toolbar icons swapped back.

[1815192] The Find function has been re-implemented as a toolbar at bottom
of application.
Button shortcuts: Ctrl+Alt+A = Advanced find,
Ctrl+Alt+S = toggle case Sensitivity, Ctrl+Alt+C = Clear find text
[1790342] Replaced additional key shortcuts for ExpandAll and CollapseAll by
toolbar buttons.  Now there is only one set (the original) of key shortcuts
+ toolbar buttons.
[1756385] The color of the application's system tray icon (when the
application is started and when there's no open database) is now user
configurable, fixing a visibility problem under Vista.
[] Saved string preferences within the database header will not be delimited
by a doublequote if this character is part of the string variable.  An
arbitrary
symbol type character will be used in this case.  If one cannot be found,
the string preference will not be saved in the database.

That's what it seems like I'm getting.  I assumed the order was the order
they were added, but I could be wrong.  All I know is the top level is
alphabetized and all the other levels are not.  So, I assume it's a bug
then...

If you uncheck "Put groups first in display tree", Password Safe
displays entries in alphabetical order.  But for some reason, when this
setting is checked, the entries seem to be be randomized,  Mine, at
least, are not in the order in which they were added to the database.

I found it's important to follow the long delay - which allows for the
browser to load a new page, with a short a delay for the actual typing
speed.

The last delay in your string is "\d999".  This causes the delay between
the appearance of each and every character of password and <some other
auth info> to take about 3 seconds. :)

So try following your three groups of "\d999"s with something short,
like "\d60".
