Abiword, Gimp, Mozilla, all my gnome stuff and lots of other smaller packages) Is this necessary? If so why, and is it just a matter of reinstalling from cd later, and then updating them online. I have a slow online connection and so don't want to waste time and energy with unnecessary downloads. Regards, Dave ( jo...@co... ) You cannot kill time without injuring eternity. -- Thoreau |

Hello, I have a working Debian system but currently run XFree 3. I am in the process of a very large upgrade download, but what I mainly want is to get XFree upgraded to version 4. Can I do this BEFORE doing an apt-get dist-upgrade without causing problems. (I have done an apt-get update to get the latest package details) If so what is the exact line I need to type using apt, is it? apt-get install task-x-window-system-core xserver-xfree86 -d Regards, Dave ( jo...@co... ) Some people hope to achieve immortality through their works or their children. Hi, After 3 weeks of haaaaaarrrdddd work, I've managed to install woody upgrading from a minimal potato installation :))) , with kernel 2.4.9, (I couldn't make it with the new kernel it refused the CV643d still a bug), anyway the system works, but now I'm trying to configure XFree86-4, I used the one from apus site but I can't get it to work with my CV643d, I don't know what I have to change, I did change the monitors H freq and V Freq (mine is 30-54 50-130) it's a standard VESA monitor max res 1024x768(48khz/60Hz), but still don't have any displayable screen. Any help ? Cv643d, Kernel 2.4.9, XFree86-4 BTW: I'm sick of annoying 'amikeyb: keyboard out of sync' messages, and where should I put the amiga keymap? Regards, Rick |

:) I'm gonna reply to myself now.. With the 2.4.9 kernel (from the apus-sourceforge site) it passed the hwclock thing.. (here comes a but) But now apt-get causes a kernel panic! I installed woody from scratch with the linux.bin kernel in the woody/.../apus/ directory from debian.org, and the woody bootdisk root.bin (worked great). This time (third try) she's getting pass the apt-get panic and is currently getting 185 megs.. So... we'll se. (last time I used telnet at the same time apt-get was downloading, is this stable or what?! ;) I had some problems earlier with network bugs in 2.4.x, I have an Accton 22-16 PCMCIA network card. So... I finally installed everything, but after booting the system does a sort of screen cycling which makes the whole thing quite unusable. I first thought it was a problem with the blanker, but then realized there actually are 3 screens that get cycled (the main one and two black ones). This happens both with 2.4.13 and 2.4.9 (2.2.10 does not boot a full installed sys). distro: Debian Woody 3.0 PPC (6 CDs) this is the bootstrap line: bootstrap --apus -k vmlinuz-2.4.13-apus root=/dev/hda3 nobats video=pm2fb:mode:800x600-60 video=amifb:vga video=map:0 debug during debian setup I set XF to use fb driver (if it somehow matters) my config: A1200 BPPC603e+@200MHz/040@25MHz BVision PPC notes: last task launched before it starts screen cycling is gdm I am in runlevel 2 >Ouu, seems as you are using some really old unpacker!! Maybe you should ad= d -d > debug to your bootstrap arguments. And maybe add debug=3Dmem so you can look at the output with dmesg in AmigaOS. -d is useless except for problems with the bootloader, before the kernel takes over. --=20 Earthling Michel D=E4nzer (MrCooper)/ Debian GNU/Linux (powerpc) developer XFree86 and DRI project member / CS student, Free Software enthusiast |

Ouu, seems as you are using some really old unpacker!! Please download th= e latest lha from aminet, or, use Unarc (AmigaOS 3.5/9 not sure which), it = works wonderfully with lha6. lha7 definitely doesn't work, but maybe this has changed with the latest BB. If you still are not able to unpack it, I can send you the unpacked kerne= l by mail! >> And oh, btw, does it say anything than just panicing? Everything was set nice. After some attempts it finally booted with kernel 2.4.9 from sf, so I thought I hade made some confusion with kernel images names; I even managed to install the distro twice, but then (without touching anything in the launch script) the whole thing paniced again, even with 2.4.13 from one of the CDs. Now everything works again and without a human understandable explanation, I installed everything I needed and I'm having some problems with XF86-4.x (I'll ask some help later if I can't find any useful hint among the posts). >> I'm not able to unpack the 2.4.17 archive from sf.net as both lha and lzx >> give errors. > > Huh? But as I said, 2.4.17-3 should be unpackable by every user, as > Michel has been so kind an packed it with lha6 and not the latest lha7! I still can't manage to unpack 2.4.17-3, as lha and lzx say something like "unknown compress method lha6". I solved the kernel-issue, but which packer (and version n) should I use? > And oh, btw, does it say anything than just panicing? Maybe you should add > -d debug to your bootstrap arguments. Just for information, the latest panics I experienced (when I was trying to install everything a second time) where the same with every kernel and all reported: Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:00 2.4.9 stated just before the line above: VFS: Cannot open root device "ram" or 01:00 Please append a correct "root=" boot option M |

I guess I forgot to add some useful infos... The old 1999 Q3 worked fine with 2.2.10, 2000 Q4 didn't panic only with 2.4.9, Debian panics with 2.2.10 2.4.9 and the one included in the cd (2.2.14, I think). I'm not able to unpack the 2.4.17 archive from sf.net as both lha and lzx give errors. > What kernel are you using ?
