Hi , I am in the process of updating my working debian 2.2r3 (originally from CD's) installation with Xfree-4. (Is it worth the effort?) I have used an apt-get install xserver -Xfree86 command and been told I need to download 31mb of stuff and 57mb will subsequently be removed from my installation. Things like abiword, gnome files etc are to be removed. Does this sound correct. I don't want to go ahead and find I need to start again. I pay for my online time per minute so I would like an alternative method if possible, is there one. (downloading seems alot slower that using my miggy, any way of speeding this up) apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade both take ages, is there an easier way of upgrading to an up todate setup? Hi again, I also wanted to try to test Rene's 53c770 driver i picked of the developers list, so i got the kernel sources, compiled it (the debian way: make-kpkg) and i think it's working fine, except for Rene's part. Is there anything i should do to activate it, besides setting the CONFIG_CYBERSTORMIII_SCSI=y in the options? Thanks, Pieter! -- Pas op de muonen! |

Hello all, Ehrm, i seem to be having some stupid problems getting X to work lately. It is saying that it cannot find any screens, and despite anything i do to the configuration file, i cant get it to stop saying that. I'm trying to use X 4.1.0.1 on plain AGA with, by the time, all the XF86Config-4 files i could get my hands on. The strange thing is that i can't remember having such problems in the past, so i was hoping that someone who is also running AGA would be so kind to send me his config file so i can give it just another try. Any other suggestions about my stupidity are welcome aswell btw... Thanks in advance, Pieter Ennes. -- Pas op de muonen! |

Normally I used to boot from either of them hdc2 had linuxppc2000 q4, now completely busted (unknown reason), it was running a server, and now everything is lost :( Ok, so now I'm giving Debian a chance and trying to install it under hde3, after skipping some installation options, it installed the base system. The thing is when I tried to call the / partition with a minimal system, it refused to open the kernel file 'linux'. and it aborted. So again I'm completely stucked, and don't know what to do. BTW I am using stable version. Regards, Rick |

Hi After trying kernel 2.4.17, I've encountered some things I didn't with kernel 2.4.9. (Using boot-floppies 3.0.19) 1. First thing is, that it is not possible to execute the point "Initialize a Linux Partition" with an already valid / partition (valid, not mounted!!) (means: I once came as far as after the reboot with the 2.4.9 kernel, and from then I have a valid / partition). After selecting this point in the menu, the screen goes white, and the installer system restarts! On console 3 I could read: Mar 3 ... (none) user.info init: Process '/sbin/udbootstrap' (pid 140) exited. Scheduling it for restart Mar 3 ... (none) user.info init: Starting pid 146, console /dev/console: '/sbin/udbootstrap' Well, if it would work with a clean drive, only partitioned by hdtoolbox and without any ext2 formatted partitions on it, I don't know. But I definitely hope so, otherwise I would again be stuck in installing Debian :( To come a bit furthter in the installation process I then fearlessly mounted the old root partition. But before the download of the base system started, the installer warned me not to do an installation on a partition which already contains an installed system, and I should restart from the scratch. Well, how could I, if am not able to reformat the / partition.. And oh, btw. it really seems to be a kernel 2.4.17 issue, as with kernel 2.4.9 I can initialize the partition problemfree! Should I report a bug against the boot-floppies concerning this problem? y / n: 2. When the installer restarts, it starts in the current console the user is in. For example, when I change to console 3 shortly after selecting this ominous "Initialize a Linux Partition" menu point, it will start in console 3 (quite practical to see the kernel output on console 1 [I am using -v ;) ]). Otherwise, if I change to console 2 and the installer systems starts there, this is quite a bad idea, because on console 2 no keyboard entry can be done (console 2 is the one in which a shell could be started by pressing enter during the installation). Well, now is this a bug or a feature? Should I report a bug against the boot-floppies concerning this problem? y / n: 3. I've encountered a minor translation mistake in the german installation welcome message (the requester "Version-Info"). I could hunt it down in http://cvs.debian.org/boot-floppies/scripts/rootdisk/messages/de/release_notes. Obviously, there haven't been any changes to this docuement since 14 months, and I don't think it's nice to already have an orthographic mistake right on the first requester you see of an installation. So, Should I report a bug against the boot-floppies concerning this problem? y / n: Well, that's it for this time! Concerning the dhcp config of the network: it worked like a charm! Thanks again to Michel!! Although I then got (repeatedly) stuck with a corrupt bsdmainutils during the download of the base system.. :( -- All the best, Andi |
