I did a woody installation from CD a while ago, and the kernel on the CD paniced when I tried to boot from HD. Using one of the latest prebuilt kernels on linux-apus.sf.net when I booted from HD worked fine, and the installation finished without any problems... - glenn |

Hi, I used to have a working LinuxPPC 1999 Q3, then I tried to upgrade it with a 2000 Q4 trying to recreate the original cd structure to make it work with the installer. The result was a half-booting system which crashed while starting X Font Server. Anyway, I got 6 brand new cds labelled "Debian 3.0 ppc bin" (20-01-2002) and tried to install it over my Linux partitions. I managed to get to the installer screen, initialize partitions and install the base system. The readme included in the cd states the "Install kernel and modules" option is not working neither needed, since the kernel is loaded via bootstrap. However, when I try to boot from hd to finish the installation, the root partition gets mounted and then the system goes in a kernel panic. I suppose modules have to be installed somehow... I also read about apus boot-floppies, could they help? where can I dl them? Thanks |

Hmm, what do you mean with a new Apus kernel? As the kernel has to be on the AmigaOS side anyway to boot into your Debian system, I always download it from the Apus site on sourceforge directly. Hi Andi, Thanks a lot for your help !!!! I've finally managed to do an installation using kernel 2.4.9, still having some issues with the post installation, I could also made it work under CV643D! :) still some issues though, installing drivers and configuring them, it doesn't recognize the boot floppy "rescue.bin" and it exits. After that i was able to configure the system, but it has some post inst nasty error "after a while doing configuration" apt-get crashes with error "kernel panic", so I couldn't finished my installation, I'm issueing dpkg-reconfigure base-config. BTW which packages do u recommend for a stable version, that can be easily upg ? > Well, first sorry for my late answer, network probs and a lot of stuff to do.. hmmm typical, I know what you mean I'm having a nightmare configuring a simple 5 machine win and a Linux gateway at the office ... > > Hmm, to be honest, I don't know how to fix your graphics problem, but there > are others with your config which have reportedly working machines! Addendum: kernel 2.4.9 does also support the X-Surf, but isn't dhcp enabled. I.e. install using the network works alright, but you have to configure the interface by yourself. Now I'm trying with potato, but the kernel > doesn't recognize my network card, an X-Surf, Kernel 2.2.10 which is included in the potato as well as in the woody boot-floppies doesn't support the X-Surf. For this to work, you have to use the latest 2.4.17 kernel, which, on the other hand may not work with the current woody boot-floppies. But you can easily workaround by initializing your root partition with kernel 2.4.9 or by hand with mke2fs /dev/yourharddiskpartition on virtual console 2 (but thats of course not the behaviour it should have, but the bug was backtraced and is intended to be fixed in the next build). Hi, I think I found a bug in latest bootstrap, after initialazing everything and arriving to the fb section, executes BusyBOX v. 060-3, then it aborts with error "Bogl can't find screen type" (it must be a bug), because I've tried with every single screen mode my Cybervison643D has and end up with the same result, my question is this program calls screenmodes on various cards, (amifb works), but virge doesn't, so is the CV643D missing ? I've tried many times to install Woody, but always got the same error, while initialising the installation proccess. Now I'm trying with potato, but the kernel doesn't recognize my network card, an X-Surf, and I dl all the main directory from ftp.debian.org using wget -r to an Amiga partition, but when it tries to find the .deb packages, fails and exits with error ie." * * * Failed to fetch : file:/mnt/hde6/debian/dists/potato/main/binary-powerpc/mail/xmh-3.3.6-11potato32.deb // many lines like this E:Unable to fetch some archives, maybe try with -fix--missing? Some errors occured while unpacking. I'm going to configure the packages that where installed ... and so forth" I noticed that missing packages are symlinks , are they pointing somewhere else ? As I mentioned in another post, I imagine the low latency patch and/or the O(1) scheduler patch, etc. might help for the internal serial interface. I have a PPC for the former at http://penguinppc.org/~daenzer/patches/11_sched-O1-K3-ppc.diff, the latter is arch independent and only missing a hook in arch/ppc/config.in. --=20 Earthling Michel D=E4nzer (MrCooper)/ Debian GNU/Linux (powerpc) developer XFree86 and DRI project member / CS student, Free Software enthusiast |

Do you use > any special IDE interfaces? I have yesterday compiled a Kernel version 2.4.17 from Apus CVS with patch of package kernel-patch-debianlogo (hmm, nice :) so there can be an Amiga Apus Logo in my bootup framebuffer? ;^)) and it booted perfectly. I have compiled only support for pm2fb, amifb, BlizzPPC SCSI. Amiga IDE is compiled as module coz I have Linux installed on SCSI disks. While booting, there is message above too, but kernel (as I say) boot normal. I have a lack of time to test the installed kernel (many of things I make as modules, the kernel is realy slim) especialy with networking. I have many problems with networking under 2.4.x kernels (ppp over modem on serial line). So, I can send here any of info about what I do to make it working or make some tests for developers (see my hw config). Michel, > It looks like the afb support is broken, I was > afraid so but never got > any definite info. I'm looking into it. Just to let you know, i unsubscribed from the APUS list for a while. I had to move, the roof of my house came off and i barely saved the miggy from the rain. I'll check back in later, when i can send mail to the list again.
