Hi, If anyone hears where Debian 3 (woody) can be bought in the uk please could they let me know. I have found it available on cd in the USA at www.lordsutch.com but I am hesitant at ordering from so far away. If anyone has experience of dealing with this company please let me know. I found out my system lacks /etc/resolv.conf The man page says it is not needed by a well installed os, but since I still can't connect to the internet... Is it that unuseful? How can automatically create one (I wouldn't know what to write in it)? Thanks |

Michel, thanks for your help, I think I solved my keyboard problem, I had a small question for you, -due to overheat on my PPC, now fortunately fixed with thermal glue -, I had many crashes that might have broken some files, i.e. gnome doesn't start and kde crashes, is there a way to check the integrity of files ?, because apt-get update and apt-get upgrade didn't fix anything, and now that my miggy is working properly, albeit a bit slow, I want to make Woody as stable as possible. Hi, My Woody, installation is working, but it has some minor glitches, first is the keyboard under X, how can I modify XF86Config-4, to make work SHIFT instead of ALT and the @ sign (I had to modify using xkeycaps), and the brackets, and braces ? I read some post about "custom keycodes" but in my XF86Config I don't have it. Another issue is fbdev, does the s3virge server work under apus or I have to live without video acceleration with a CV643d ? And finally is there a way to login as root instead of a user when entering init 2 mode ? TIA Rick |

Hi, I recently read that Debian 3 was nearing completion if it had not already done so. Does anyone know how long it normally takes for the full distro to be available on CD to buy for our PPC machines. (to save some massive downloads when upgrading) And would the CD include the latest XFree. I appreciate this list doesn't just cover debian but a lot of people seem to use it on our machines, and may follow the news. And that's what I did. A brand-new install, with just the necessary packages, and not a bit more. Now kppp crashes after the first run and then gives a segmentation fault whenever I try to run it within the same session. I configured wvdial and gave it a try (maybe the best dialing tool after Miami...), everything works fine until pppd dies with error 16 (modem hangup, if I'm not wrong). I really really really do not know what to do (and I'm getting tired of it). I'll love any suggestion, apart from "change OS"... :) Michele PS: If it can be a hint, freeciv client can't connect to localhost saying "Network unreachable" |

Here is the main problem: when I press play on XMMS no sound is played but the modem switches on (!). I'm using kernel 2.4.9, everything is correctly installed (I hope). I even added alias sound-slot-0 dmasound_paula to etc/modutils/aliases and ran update-modules, but it didn't work. Moreover, when I launch KDE after loading the window manager a message appears telling something about a cpu overload problem dealing with the sound server. I can't connect to the internet either. GKDial connects but drops the line as soon as authentication ends, kppp can't access /dev/ttyS0 from users even if all the permissions and group are set correctly (I'm in dip, dialout etc...). When I run kppp as root, it finds the modem, connects, but then pppd dies (also after I chmoded it) telling that it can't find ppp (but the aliases seem right). I thought it could be a kernel issue so I tried 2.2.10, which panics, and decided to give the latest 2.4.18 a try, but I can't manage to boot, as it hangs up (does not panic or give errors at all) just after finding the hard drive. I'm a former user of LPPC 1999 Q3, and everything worked nice there with 2.2.10 (btw, is there any way to install a 2000 Q4?). Any suggestion will be of *much* help :) Thank you Michele This is the bootstrap output, followed in attachment by dmesg and modprobe -c ones. No, I have a BlizzPPC 175 with and 040, but now I upgraded to the 2.4.18-1 kernel, and some kernel panics disappeared, at least there are less of them ... Another problem happened, I managed to start Gnome but if I try the slightest thing related to eth0, say a ping to my public ip, it freezes and locks up ! I've tried apt-get update, and it failed to fetch anything (like when the network is down), the strange thing is I did netstat -nat and it is listening on many ports, and the network is working perfectly under init 1, but when going into init 2 and load Gnome, stops working, it's a pain, I have to be very careful because, otherwise it freezes and locks ! I'm considering an overheating problem, I have a big fan cooler, brand new, but I don't know how to fit it in the tiny space the blizzPPC has, and if it's better to just glue the fan or add the whole thing. Thank you anyway ;) Regards, Rick > > Needless to say, the PPC chip did give up the ghost...oh well nothing lasts > forever. > > Adam |

Hi, I'm sick of having problems with my Debian Woody distro, I'm using latest 2.4.17-3 kernel, and installed the modules from the Debian packages, update, upgrade, everything seems to be fine except for a very annoying problem, I'm not able to run ANY window manager and I get TOO many kernel signal =11s , TOO often, anyway X starts fine, but when it gets to the selection screen, sometimes get stuck !! or after choosing a wm, say gnome or kde it starts openning and in the middle FREEZES, leaving the only choice of a hard RESET, with the annoying problems afterwards. I just did an upgrade on gnome and it upgraded it ok, but I can't get to display a thing. I've tried with kde, but now it doesn't even load the starting screen with the KDE logo and the extensions. Can't understand what's going on, and I only need to configure an Apache server with php and mysql, to show some work, and to my desperation I wasn't able to do it. Any advice from the experts is REALLY appreciated ... Regards, Rick |

The bottom line is you'll have to find your own solution to your problem.
