Motorola has announced the launch of three new handsets from its global portfolio in India -- V70, V60 and T191.... Also in the offing is a camera phone, which will be launched globally as well as in India in Q4, as also a Hindi-compatible handset, which would be followed by other local language compatible products... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- ----- Original Message ----- From: "K. Kalyanasundaram" <ka...@so...> Sent: Thursday, October 03, 2002 11:06 AM Subject: Proceedings of Tamil Internet 2002 conference Dear Friends: Tamil Internet 2002, just concluded at Foster City, California, USA has been a great success in spite of a few major constraints and handicaps. The conference was attended by about 200 delegates from about 8 countries. Some 50 speakers addressed a wide spectrum of issues as in the past conferences, some ongoing and some new ones. They focused on technology, content, community and business developments. They included Linux operating system in Tamil, E- Government, teaching of Tamil through IT, Tamil Unicode interfaces and implementation, latest developments in Tamil language based technologies such as optical character recognition (OCR) which is now ready for public use, search engines, machine translation, speech synthesis and handwriting recognition. In addition, the conference addressed opportunities for building Tamil cyber communities and business networks. The meeting also became a lively forum for interaction among Tamil IT-related scholars, technologists and end users. Mani Manivannan and his team of volunteers (majority of them computer professionals based in bay area) put in considerable amount of time and energy to ensure that the conf. takes place in a highly professional manner. I would like to record my sincere appreciation and gratitude to them. It has been a great pleasure and privilege for me to be part of this great Organizing team for Tamil Internet 2002. "California Communique" summarizing key results of the TI2002 will be published soon at the INFITT website http://www.infitt.org/ti2002 . In addition to producing a printed version of the Conference Proceedings, Organizers have produced an electronic version as well (maiden effort). The printed version (ca. 350 pages) has full version or summary of 75 papers accepted for presentation at TI2002. The TI2002 Conf. CD contains --PDF versionof these 75 papers and also several other goodies such as -- PDF of all papers presented at earlier TI2001 Malaysian Conference, -- a collection of Tamil Softwares, fonts, OCR demo and -- PDF version of all etexts of Tamil Literary Works released till date by Project Madurai. Fortunately we do have some copies of the printed version of the Conf. Proceedings and also the Conf. CD left for sale to the general public. Printed version of TI2002 conf. volume is priced at US$ 20 + postage (Rs. 500 for for those within India) and the Conf. CD has a price tag of US$ 10. If you would like to have a copy of either of these or both, you may send in your orderby email to Mr. A. Narayanan of INFITT Secretariat at his mailbox <nar...@id...>. Nara will confirm your order with instructions on how to make the payment. Copies will be mailed to you either from India or from the USA. Residents of North America may send in their orders to TI2002 chair, Mr. Mani Manivannan <mma...@ea...> as well. For those who could not attend the TI2002 conference, this is an excellent opportunity to get hold of the papers presented, before they are all sold out. We have only very limited copies you are well advised to place your order as soon as possible. Orders will be processed on a first-come-served basis. anbudan Kalyan Dr. K. Kalyanasundaram Chair, Conf. Programme Committee for TI2002 http://www.infitt.org/ti2002/ |

-----Forwarded Message----- From: Nagarjuna G. <nag...@hb...> To: ind...@li..., fsf...@mm..., fsf...@mm... Cc: Richard Stallman <rm...@gn...>, Frederick Noronha <fr...@by...> Subject: [Fsf-friends] Good News! Date: 02 Oct 2002 13:03:48 +0530 A very good news. I am just coming from a meeting with Mr. M.S. Sridhar (of Cyberscape Multimedia Limited) and Prof. Jitender Shaw (VJTI, Mumbai). Sridhar is releasing the Indian Language TTF fonts (more than hundred) under GPL today the the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. He has fonts for all the languages. The press release and release note will be posted by evening. I wanted to break the news to all of you. We have been trying to have this meeting happen, but it happened today. The fonts will be putup on FSF-India's website for download, as well as their companies web site. The details will be announced soon. I will put it up on the FSF site as soon as I get the CD. We can also put them up at indic-computing site at sourceforge. Now the task is to make use of the set of TTF fonts and solve the immediate problem of encoding and rendering with TTF fonts in all the Indian Languages and release the GNU/Linux distro with GNOME applications enabled by January 26. The next task is to convert these fonts to Open Type fonts as soon as possible. Mr. Sridhar is only anticipating from the free software community the technical know how so that their company will also start developing applications under GNU/Linux OS, and also help us solve the problem of converting TTF to OTF. I hope this news will add momentum to the efforts of localization. I wish to thank on behalf of the free software community Sridhar and also Jitender Shaw for initiating this process and making this happen. I think this gesture of Sridhar will be a slap on the face of CDAC and other both Govt and private companies who are refusing to share such resources. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Sep 2002 16:55:42 -0500 (CDT) From: Susan Herring <su...@li...> [--] Call For Papers: THE MULTILINGUAL INTERNET: LANGUAGE, CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION IN INSTANT MESSAGING, EMAIL AND CHAT Co-editors: Brenda Danet Susan Herring Hebrew University of Jerusalem Indiana University and Yale University Bloomington bre...@ya... he...@in... In today's multilingual, global world, hundreds of millions of people are communicating on the Internet not only in its established lingua franca, English, but also in many other languages. To date, the research literature in English on the features of computer-mediated communication has focused almost exclusively on emergent practices in English, neglecting developments within populations communicating online in other languages. This is a Call for Papers for a special issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, a peer-reviewed online journal. We may also edit a follow-up book on the same theme, containing a wider selection of papers, with a major publisher. Papers may relate to instant messaging, private email, postings to listserv lists and newsgroups, text-only chat, e.g., on IRC or MOOs, visually enhanced chat, or SMS (short message service) in mobile phone use. We invite papers on topics such as: --The influence of the local language on the use of a medium, e.g., the distinctive features of email or chat in languages with specific font-related requirements (e.g., French, Russian, Hindi, Arabic, Korean, Chinese). --Cultural constraints on the use of the medium, e.g., how traditional requirements for deference in Japanese language and culture are realized or modified in online communication; Italian non-verbal and verbal expressivity as realized in typed chat. --Comparison of the distinctive features of email or chat in two or more language-culture groups or sub-groups with differing cultural orientations, e.g., Austrian German versus German German. --Chat in situations of diglossia--differentiation between spoken and written languages and dialects (e.g., Moroccan spoken Arabic and how it is being realized in typed chat). --Code-switching in bilingual or multilingual online communication. --The clash between requirements of formality in the letter-writing tradition in a given language-culture constellation and the trend toward speech-like patterns in online textual communication. --Language and play with culture, including play with identity (e.g., via nicknames). --A comparison of online communication within the same language- culture group but in different languages, e.g., Israeli chat in English versus Hebrew. --The effects of the English language or global "netspeak" (Crystal, 2001) on email and chat in the local language. --Online communication in English by non-native speakers, focusing on language and culture issues. Submission procedures: Potential authors should submit a preliminary proposal of 500-1000 words by November 30, 2002 (earlier submissions are encouraged). The proposal should describe the research question, the data and methods of analysis, preliminary findings/observations and their broader significance, and should include selected references. The proposal should also include a tentative paper title. Authors whose proposals are accepted for inclusion will be invited to submit a full paper of roughly 7,000-10,000 words by April 15, 2003. Since JCMC is an interdisciplinary journal, authors should plan for papers that will be accessible to non-specialists. If you have a potentially suitable paper that is already published or slated for publication elsewhere, we would also like to hear from you, as it might be possible to republish high quality articles in the follow-up book. Questions? Proposal ideas? Please address all correspondence electronically to both co-editors: Brenda Danet (bre...@ya...) and Susan Herring (he...@in...).
