hi all, when it comes to indic font development, i see an iceberg ahead. there seems to be not sufficient expertise or knowledge-sharing, when it comes to hinting. in fact the problem is two-fold: 1) we must develop type-set quality, professional fonts, not just "functional" fonts. for this we must have our glyphs expertly designed, with a good and sensitive understanding of curves, weights, proportions, ink-trapping, 'readablity', style-consistency, etc. 2) then, we must hint them correctly. and test them on different rendering engines and devices, at different resolutions, especially coarse and/or low resolutions. i find it more important to have a high-quality, professional-typeset ready font, with a limited glyph-set, rather than one with a huge glyph-set, but with lack of these two important fundamentals. on this, i propose the following action: we must announce and hold another indic font development workshop. focussed *just* on expert glyph design, and on hinting, how to hint, hinting methods, hinting tools, hinting rocket science, hinting issues, hinting renderings in different software, hinting testing, and so on. imagine the scale of the problem we may create, if we encourage lots of people to start developing fonts, without these two basic issues solidly understood and without teaching and sharing these concepts and techniques. whaddya say, guys? hint: say yes. :-) LL |

After the workshop it was decided to give focussed attention to each language and build the language resources and take up localisation projects besides offcourse developing OT fonts. I would request you to take up the getting together of the oriya language community. Already initiatives have been taken by Punjabi, Hindi and Bengali language regional group for organisation of the community in these languages. I am currently in Bhopal discussing for support for Hindi regional group and I am happy to inform you and other groups that for a hindi group initiative people are getting together in M.P. along with sponsorship. I shall soon be posting on the framework for the regional workshop for feedback by the community. best vijay -- Vijay Pratap Singh Aditya ekgaon technologies email: vi...@ek... website: http://www.ekgaon.com |

Hi, I have completed the initial work in converting two of the Akruti Oriya fonts into OT format. They can temporally be got from here: http://www.btinternet.com/~exnet/Downloads/odia.htm I will complete the conversion of the 'ori2' fonts in the next week or so. The fonts could do with a good name (they are currently called ori1Uni) I will not be making any changes to these fonts after there final release except in response to bug fix requests. This is because I am currently concentrating on making sets of Indic fonts with original designs. Andy |

See /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/dev (you can find others like tam, guj, gur, kan, tel etc also ) I personally like inscript, you can type your name in other scripts too :), apart from that once learnt its very easy to type & fast. Initially many prefer phonetic/romanised systems but in long run if you want to write in your language inscript is the best. Regards, Karunakar --__--__-- |

The IndLinux web site is at www.indlinux.org and the Milan Hindi interface we have developed is a 1.5MB download from this web site. We would be very happy to see Milan included with the Elx CD. I do wish we would do more justice to home-grown efforts. While on this point, you probably know that the IndLinux project has come out with a Hindi version of Gnome. The software is available as a free download from the Web site www.indlinux.org. With IndLinux Milan v0.37 installed, those who can read and write Hindi can now use computers in their own language. The organization said that this is a major step forward in bringing the benefits of information technology to the 400 million people who speak the Hindi language. Prakash Advani, co-founder of IndLinux.org said that the organization has been working on localizing the GNU/Linux operating system to Hindi for the last three years. Localization involves changing the menus and other elements of the graphic user interface from English to Hindi. "Hindi is the third largest language in the world, yet there are no operating systems available in this language. IndLinux.org therefore decided to make Hindi support available for free to create a revolution in Indian Language Computing," said Advani. As the world becomes increasingly digitized, Indian Language audiences need to be brought into the mainstream of the digital revolution so that they can also reap the socio-economic benefits of information technology. The IndLinux Milan software is expected to plug a critical gap in the market, since popular operating systems and software are available only in English which is spoken by a mere five percent of India. IndLinux Milan v0.37 works on Red Hat Linux v8.0 and the organization is working on porting it to other distributions of the GNU/Linux operating system. Advani said that they chose the name Milan (Hindi for "Union") because it signifies the inclusion of India's Hindi speaking masses into the mainstream of the digital age. As the cost of computers fall, the biggest bottleneck to the widespread use of computers is the availability of Indian language software. By making the software available free of cost, Indlinux.org hopes that information technology will reach each and every part of India. IndLinux.org is a voluntary, non-profit effort that has been supported by Netcore Solutions Pvt. Ltd, a Mumbai-based technology company. After having localized GNU/Linux to Hindi, the organization hopes to localize the GUI to Marathi, Gujarati and other Indian languages. She wrote a small intro book in Kannada on computers (of course, PCs running Win*) and how to use them in day-to-day life for basic purposes. Some such small book could be written as intro to Computers and Linux for those who don't know English and who don't know computers. Of course, if it's written in one Indian language, it will have to translated into other Indian languages too (at least some). Hi All, First National Indic-Font workshop, organized by Indic-Computing Consortium was held from 28th to 30th March 2003 at PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore. The workshop went on well although with some initial hiccups. The workshop was to accommodate 30 participants, but last minutes entries took the no.s to 36, in the interest of participation they were included as participants. There were some initial problems as one of the expected sponsorship did not come by, but finally we were able to go ahead with the workshop without any major problem. We are thankful to all the sponsors especially PES Institute of Technologies, Bangalore provided excellent space for smooth conduct of workshop and computers for Lab for font development, Sarai, New Delhi to help us move ahead by accommodating our last minutes requests and DeepRoot Linux for all the ground work put by there team. Dr. Pavanaja who shared his time even though having a small accident just few days before workshop and Karunakar, Arun & Nagarjuna for providing their time and support. A special thank is due to participants from Nepal & Bangladesh Mr. Amar Gurung & Mr. Mustafa Jabbar for sharing their experiences and promise of continued support to Indic-Computing Consortium in future also. The three days of deliberations and action points are as under. best vijay -- Vijay Pratap Singh Aditya ekgaon technologies email: vi...@ek... website: http://www.ekgaon.com Action points First National Indic-Font Workshop March 2003 ----------------------------------------------------------- Vijay Pratap Singh Aditya <vi...@ek...> First National Indic-Font workshop, organized by Indic-Computing Consortium was held from 28th to 30th March 2003 at PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore. The Indic-Computing Consortium is an initiative of software developers, businesses and academic institutions to evolve appropriate standards, resources and technologies for the Indic-Computing community. The Indic-Computing Consortium is designed as a national-level participatory organisation that serves as a common forum for discussion, information exchange and advocacy on behalf of all parties interested in the development of Indic Language Computing. The workshop second in series was attended by 36 participants from various languages & technology groups across India, Nepal & Bangladesh. This workshop was an outcome of deliberation held in the first Indic-Computing workshop held in September 2002 at Bangalore. One of the working groups formed at the first Indic-Computing workshop was for development of OTF (OpenType Fonts) & other font related issues, encoding, language standardization and representation in international consortium. One of the action point and agenda for the group was to Hold OTF training workshop for developing major Indic language OTF fonts. The idea was to get the community together for: i. Developing good look fonts ii. Development of open source tools for rendering and hinting of OTF fonts (currently OTF development uses proprietary tools) iii. Finding font developers for all Indian languages and coordinating group for each language iv. Making available fonts to be converted to OTF The workshop addressed above issues and others as enclosed in the workshop program (please see the website), through presentations, discussions & Lab/training sessions over three days. This was the first workshop on the subject, while it focused on OTF, it equally shared concerns of open standards community and talks, demos and training sessions of open source tools, as well as various alternative technologies for Indic fonts were done by some of the participants. The copyright/patent issue on OTF was also discussed, and concerns of community were answered by Mr. Lawrence Liang, (Expert on Cyber Laws) with a caution that the topic is debatable and much would be clear after the pending case of Adobe in USA courts is decided. Conclusion: At the end of the workshop its was proposed to take up the issues that have emerged at more depth through regional consultations on each language so that focused attention is their and local & regional groups also get chance to participate and discuss there issues. We propose to take up these Regional Language Workshops in future across different parts of India, Nepal & Bangladesh and other regions with languages of Indic origin. These workshops would be coordinated by regional language groups (see proposed group) and would include training programs and technology demonstration sessions besides getting the language community together. Regional Language Working Groups: It was proposed to take up the initiative for having these regional workshops through voluntary and community efforts. An individual commitment on part of participants was requested to involve there energy in development of these regional groups and also to discuss with these respective organization to release atleast two fonts in each language in open domain. Many participants gave the commitment to take the initiative and also to get their organization involved in the initiative. The following Regional Working Groups are proposed (to be confirmed), these groups would take initiative and involve other regional partners and build common understanding of major issues to be discussed in the Regional Workshops. A framework for proposed Regional Workshop would be circulated soon for feedback and action by these groups. We invite volunteers who would take upon to hold these workshops and provide coordination & logistics support and sponsors to contribute to development of regional languages. The Indic-Computing Consortium would provide necessary technical support and capacity building to these regional groups. Hello Everyone, I would welcome some constructive criticism on an article on Indic languages on this site: http://www-3.ibm.com/software/globalization/topics/indic/ There are a couple of typographical errors which are being corrected. In this article, I have tried to give an overview of Indian languages and outlined the issues which should assist everyone in developing support for them. I stress upon a clear and standard definition of Indian languages from linguists and experts so that we developers can build correct and unambiguous support. It is not intended as an exhaustive article (which would never be complete) but as an overview and introduction. Most of the important problems in developing support for Indian languages are also mentioned. Please respond to me with your rants and raves. I would also welcome any additional information. Regards, Abhijit ____________________________ |
