________________________________________________________________________ Message: 1 Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2003 08:58:34 -0800 (PST) From: Sagar Behere <sag...@ya...> Subject: IndLinux v 0.37 is available. Hi guys, All those who wanted to test out IndLinux can now rejoice. I have with me, v 0.37 of Indlinux, codenamed "Milan". A bit a this and that... Indlinux (http://www.indlinux.org) is an ongoing effort to indianise the GNU/linux operating system. The aim is to take GNU/Linux to the common man, who does not necessarily know English. People should be able to use computers through their own native language, and so the IndLinux project aims at providing support for all the 18 official indian languages. I've picked up the above mentioned CD from Pune, and it patches against the stock Red HAt 8.0 version. If you have Red Hat 8.0, you can use Milan to get a feel of what the entire thiing is. As of now, the translation effort is 37% complete and so ther version is 0.37. Among other things, you can see most of the system menus and stuff in HIndi, many apps are also having hindi support and you can even send mail, and chat in hindi. Indlinux currently uses GNOME 2, and works out of the box on Red Hat 8.0. I've heard someone say that it works with Mandrake 9.0 too, but I am not sure... In the meantime, I am facing some problems with makinf RH 8.0 workiong on my computer, so in my spare time, I am trying to ge IndLinux to work with my Debian 3.0 system. Those who want the IndLinux CD, can take it from me for Rs.15 After taking a look at v 0.37, I am eagerly awaiting the day when v 1.0 will be out. I'm sure you'll feel teh same way. All in all, this is a _fantastic_ project and I invite all of you to take a look. Cheers to the IndLinux team, Sagar ------------------------------------------------------- Its about walking on the path, not just knowing it... ------------------------------------------------------- |

Hi All, This is the final day (20th march 2003) for registration to the "The=20 First National Indic-Font workshop" to be held from 28th to 30th March=20 2003, at PESIT Bangalore, India. We request all members who wish to=20 participate to send in there applications by today. Although we have=20 been having very large no. of applications we are looking forward to=20 participation of all language groups which as of now are un represented. Please find under the latest workshop updates and logistics information=20 for participants. best vijay --=20 Vijay Pratap Singh Aditya ekgaon technologies email: vi...@ek... website: http://www.ekgaon.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------= -------------------------------------------------------------------------= ------------ Indic-Computing Consortium Forging community partnerships to enable Indian language computing The Indic-Computing Consortium is an initiative of software developers, b= usinesses and academic institutions to help evolve appropriate standards,= resources and technologies for the Indic-Computing community.=20 The Indic-Computing Consortium is designed as a national-level participat= ory organisation that serves as a common forum for discussion, informatio= n exchange and advocacy on behalf of all parties interested in the develo= pment of Indian Language Computing. The consortium aims to make true acce= ss of computing possible for Indian people by enabling support in local l= anguage.=20 A framework is being built for creation of a hierarchy of participatory c= onsortia, which would facilitate broad regional and local participation i= n the standardization and development process from a variety of stakehold= ers with differing areas of expertise and specialization. It is aimed tha= t these consortia be participatory and inclusive to properly represent th= e viewpoint of local developers, users and other stakeholders. In step tw= o, Indic-Computing Consortium would encourage & support formation of stat= e-level consortia for each regional language, which could include partici= pants from the following key member groups: Developers: Software developers and managers developing local-language to= ols Technologists: Academics and other experts in encoding and representation= issues Users / Practioners: Government agencies, publishers, NGOs and other majo= r users of local-language software Linguistic Groups: Academics and other experts of the linguistic features= of a language and it's script =20 Working closely with the State Government, this state-level consortium wo= uld serve as the representative body for deciding standards and other tec= hnical decisions for computing in a given regional language. The major ro= les to be carried out by the state-level consortium would be as follows: Discuss various technical, linguistic and practical issues related to com= puting in the regional language Serve as a capacity-building and educational resource for small regional = software developers and users Publish documents, tools & other materials helpful for local-language com= puting and development Represent the regional language at National consortium meetings Represent the regional language at International Standardization consorti= ums and proceedings such as Unicode and ISO In September 2002 Indic-Computing organised its first National workshop, = which aimed at finding the various problems faced by the developer commun= ities and issues related to standardization, technical support, policy an= d tools. To know more about the consortium, workshops and other initiativ= es, visit us at http://indic-computing.sourceforge.net =20 Indic-Computing Consortium announces=20 First National Indic-Font Workshop Date: 28th to 30th March 2003 Venue: PESIT, Bangalore Sponsors: PESIT, Bangalore Vishwa Kannada, Bangalore DeepRoot Linux, Bangalore CHiPS, Chattisgarh Infotech Promotion Society, Raipur=20 Sarai, New Delhi Indlinux.org, Mumbai =20 ekgaon technologies, Madurai =20 The workshop:=20 One of the working groups formed at the first Indic-Computing workshop wa= s for development of OTF & issues related to language standardization and= representation in international consortium. One of the action point and = agenda for the group was to =1CHold OTF training workshop for developing = major Indian language OTF fonts=1D. Dr. U B Pavanaja took upon to hold an= d coordinate this workshop and Mr. Abhas Abhinav proposed to coordinate f= or logistics & sponsorship, Mr. G. Nagarjuna proposed to help coordinate = with Akruti for making available fonts to be used for develop OTF. This g= roup succeeded in its tasks making this workshop possible, Akruti release= d some free fonts to be used for conversion to OTF, which were taken up b= y some of the language groups (for more details on the language groups an= d the major issues being dealt by it please go through the proceedings of= first workshop at our website) Some of the major concerns raised by the language community were: i. Developing good look fonts ii. Development of open source tools for rendering and hinting of OTF= fonts (currently OTF development uses proprietary =20 tools) iii. Finding font developers for all Indian languages and coordinating= the group iv. Making available fonts to be converted to OTF=20 This workshop seeks to address some of these issues and others enclosed i= n the workshop program as under. This is the first national workshop on t= he subject, while it shall focus on OTF, but it shall equally share conce= rns of open standards community and would have talks, demos and training = sessions of open source tools, as well as various alternative technologie= s for Indian fonts. We propose to take up more regional language font wor= kshops in future to give focused attention to each language, these worksh= ops would be held all across India in different parts and would hold trai= ning programs and technology demonstration. We invite volunteers who woul= d take upon to hold these workshops and provide coordination & logistics = support. The Indic-Computing Consortium would provide necessary technical= support and capacity building to these regional groups. Why OpenType? OpenType is an extension to TrueType, and uses Unicode as standard for ch= aracter encoding. It also provides additional tables for defining rich se= t of mappings between characters and glyphs. It also provides for a havin= g a large glyph set and even glyph variants. All the features provided by= OpenType format can be made use by having a application independent, pre= ferable system level library with a api interface usable by applications.= For Indic script processing OpenType tables like GSUB (glyph substitution= ) and GPOS (glyph positioning) gives font designer to define his rules on= what conjuncts or combinations could be made available. Application prog= rammer is relieved of the burden of knowing all the linguistic part. Also= OpenType sort of makes the concept of glyph standard or font encoding st= andard redundant, again giving font vendors freedom to follow their own g= lyph sets and not really affecting the application. To summarize OpenType= provides lot of benefits to Indic computing and also renders redundant s= ome issues faced in Indic computing. There has been an ongoing debate on whether OTF is right for Indian Langu= ages. The debate is relevant and contextual also. One of the perspectives= penned by G Karunakar in support of OpenType is here for participants to= explore. However the debate goes on and we invite all to participate in = it on the Indic-computing mailing list. Hi list! Long time. I'm trying to install the shideva font which is available in http://home.t-online.de/home/E.Tremel/Hindi/ . Here's my current setup: Redhat 7.1 with indix. To install indix, I followed the instructions in http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Indic-Fonts-HOWTO/ , it's been working fine, except that I had to add the line export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib in my .bash_profile so that libIndic.so.1 is picked up when I startx. Raghu font is installed properly. What I'm trying to do now: Install shideva font as an alternative to raghu. Now I downloaded the ttf file, called LruLruushiDeva.ttf and moved it to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType. The size is almost double(285584) of raghu(133708). Now I cd to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType and run mkfontdir which is successful. Then I run xset fp rehash This is the error: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key xset: unable to open display ":0.0" This happens when I'm trying to xset withing gnome using a terminal session. If I'm outside gnome, on the command prompt, xset fp rehash gives the error xset: unable to open display "" Googling for this error gave me an indication that it was because Load "freetype" statement should be present in the XF86Config-4 file, under the modules section, which is already there(Remember I have already installed raghu successfully). Since I didn't touch any of the config files since then, I suspect that there is some env variable missing or some changes are needed in the path. Can anyone help? It will be a big relief. It is useful to remember that similar software has been available= for at least the last three years as a result of the IITM project in= Chennai. Details are available on the acharya web site ( http://acharya.iitm.ac.in ) During this time, at least 300-400 visually handicapped persons= have been trained to use this software in different parts of India and= a few other South Asian countries. Among the many improvements that Prof. Krishnan has in mind, is replacing the slightly Westernized accents of the voice= synthesizer with native Indian language accents/voices. If there is anyone on= the list who can help with this, do contact him at= rk...@ac... The software works in all the languages that the IITM project supports- about 10 or 11. These are fantastic achievements considering that the IITM labs have been running on a zero budget= ever since inception. Karthik Venkatesh >3. Kalam launches software for the blind By Mohammed Shafeeq, Indo-Asian News Service Hyderabad, Mar 15 (IANS) For the visually impaired, information in Telugu and Hindi is just a click away. President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Saturday launched software for the visually handicapped that makes this possible. "Reading Aid for Blind", developed by the International Institute for Information Technology (IIIT), enhances the reading capability of the visually handicapped. With the help of this software, text on-screen can be transformed to speech. The computer then reads this out to the user. Initially created for English readers, the software has been adapted for Hindi and Telugu. The project, funded by the Satyam Computers, has seen the establishment of a language technology centre at a cost of Rs.10 million at IIIT for the development of Indian languages. The President presented the software to Dinesh Kushal, a visually impaired software developer of the Indian Association of Blind. An ecstatic, Kushal described the software as a boon. "The information from Indian languages will now be accessible. It has opened new vistas for people like me," he said. Kalam lauded the efforts of the IIIT in applying Information Technology for the benefit of the visually impaired. "It is doing excellent work in research and development of software technology for its societal, industrial, financial and scientific applications," he said. Recalling his interaction with the physically and mentally challenged children on various occasions, the president said these children also had the urge to pursue studies and work. "You have to provide solutions to their problems using IT to develop audio books, talking websites, voice interface and other devices", he said. The development of this aid cost Rs.1.5 million. It is likely to be extended to the other Indian languages in two years. --Indo-Asian News Service |

Hi, Some patents related to handling Opentype. Maybe we should debate on these, how they affect free s/w or opensource. Also if there is any relevance to Indic. Font feature file processing - Adobe Systems http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=/netahtml/search-adv.htm&r=1&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=ptxt&S1=Opentype&OS=Opentype&RS=Opentype Methods and apparatus that process a front-end editable text file--a feature file--that specifies features for a font, and in particular to an OpenType.TM. font. The specified features are parsed and stored in the font as font data. The feature file contains simple logic statements for the specification of various typographical features, such as layout features, expressed in a high-level feature definition language. The feature file may contain override values for fields in font tables. The feature file can be processed in combination with an existing font file to establish an enhanced font file. Using and accessing information from fonts in multiple formats - Sun Microsystems http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=/netahtml/search-adv.htm&r=3&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=ptxt&S1=Opentype&OS=Opentype&RS=Opentype Laying out a paragraph by defining all the characters as a single text run by substituting, and then positioning the glyphs - Microsoft http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=/netahtml/search-adv.htm&r=4&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=ptxt&S1=Opentype&OS=Opentype&RS=Opentype Laying out a paragraph using a layout services library. An entire paragraph is defined as a single text run. The text run is laid out by substituting glyphs for the characters of the text run and then positioning the glyphs. After the text run is laid out, the length of the text run is compared to the line length. If the length of the text run exceeds the line length, then the text run is divided into a parent text run and a child text run. If justification is enabled, then the parent text run is justified. If a child text run is created, then the length of the child text run is compared to the line length. If the length of the child text run exceeds the line length, then the process is repeated until the length of the last child text run does not exceed the line length. A layout services library provides text processing functions which support the paragraph layout and the justification. Method for rendering glyphs using a layout services library - Microsoft http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=/netahtml/search-adv.htm&r=5&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=ptxt&S1=Opentype&OS=Opentype&RS=Opentype Rendering glyphs using a layout services library. A layout services library provides a set of text-processing functions for use by a client program. The text-processing functions access font information stored in the font tables insulating the client program from the details of the font table formats. The layout services library may be used to identify glyph variants and to position glyphs along a base line for a run of text. To identify glyph variants, the layout services library scans the run of text to identify the locations of characters having alternative glyph forms. The layout services library creates a list of feature parameter structures, each of which contains a count of the number of glyph alternates that apply for each identified character. The client program assembles a list of identical characters which have different parameters and presents a list of all glyph variants to the user who chooses one of the alternatives. To position glyphs, the layout services library assembles data that describes the advance of a virtual pen point from glyph to glyph along the base line, an X-placement value, and a Y-placement value. The X-placement value and the Y-placement value are used to position the glyph with respect to the virtual pen point on the base line. Hi all, I created an IRC channel #indic-computing at irc.freenode.net This could be used for live discussions. We also have #indlinux ( linux localisation ), #gnome-india ( gnome dev & localisation ) at irc.gimp.org . Right now I have my xchat to save all conversations, later on we can have a bot doing it on 24x7 basis. Thanks. > > Dear Nagarajan, The program for the workshop was to be revised if member would come to volunteer for topics as speakers that would have made this workshop truly a open debate on Indic-Font. In the course of time and as you have also seen nobody came forward. It was expected from you also to take up some topic, but you also did not volunteer. I was in constant touch with Dr. Pavanaja on the issue and was hoping that some one would come forward but at the end of the day topics remain as they are with inclusion of special presentation only (which are yet to be scheduled, which Pavanaja is supposed to do, after discussing with the speaker). Only two presenters Arun M & Karunakar have confirmed till now to take up there topics. My suggestion to you and request to all others is that there is still time to include other generic & specific issues related to indic-fonts along with the tools (OS) as well. But people who are working on them have to come forward to volunteer for the topics. Finally the same could be discussed by the community and included in the agenda. If we are not able to get good presenters to take up those topics, then sadly, this workshop would limit it self to Open Type font, as also was mentioned in my last mail, Koshy was also of the same opinion. I guess this is up to you to decide, If you do agree then please contact Karunakar & Pavanaja, as they are coordinating the technical programme, I am limited to arrangements for the workshop. thanks vijay > > > >>From: Vijay Pratap Singh Aditya <vi...@ek...> >>Reply-To: vi...@ek..., >> indic-computing-devel <ind...@li...> >>Organization: ekgaon technologies >>Subject: [Indic-computing-standards] [Indic-Computing] Indic Font Workshop >>Date: Sat, 22 Feb 2003 17:06:26 +0530 >>Status: RO >> >> >>Hi! >> >>There are a few updates after the last announcement on the OTF workshop >>to share with the community. Thanks to Zunaira Durrani for sending this in. FN ---------- Forwarded message ---------- http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/2831075.stm BBC Urdu Online 'the best' By Umber Khairi BBC Urdu Online The team get messages from all around the world BBC's Urdu news site, BBCurdu.com, has just been ranked the world's best Urdu website by South Asia's leading internet magazine, Spider. The March issue of Spider carried out a survey of Urdu sites to rank the top 10 websites. BBCUrdu.com shared the honour with the news daily Jang's internet site, jang.com. Spider says BBCUrdu is "remarkable - one of the best news and entertainment sites and gives a high standard content in Urdu". All over the world When BBCUrdu was launched last year, it was hailed as something that would prove to be a landmark in Urdu online publishing. "Remarkable, one of the best sites," was the judges' verdict More than a year later, the news site logs thousands of hits 24 hours a day. It now ranks as the most successful of the BBC's South Asia language news sites. It gets e-mails from readers from countries as far apart as Finland and Japan, as well as from remote areas of Pakistan. "It is really gratifying," says BBCUrdu's editor Mohammed Hanif. "Since Urdu is just developing on the web, it is truly exciting to be part of the whole process." Variety of choice The Spider survey gives an interesting picture of Urdu publishing on the web. Of the top 10 sites it lists, two are Urdu dailies (Jang and Ausaf), and three are portals. One offers Urdu and other regional language downloads (Liwal). One is a bilingual news site originating from the US (Urdu Times), and one offers Urdu tutorials, dictionaries and Urdu website building skills (Ukindia). |

Dear Enthoo's This mail is to tell you my experience with Beta version of Thamizha! Browser. Its a 13MB installation file, which can be downloaded from www.thamizha.com. And installation goes without any problem. Please note that this version is designed for Windows 2000 and XP only. the edition for 9x platforms is under construction. Please look at the following the following things, for installation of Thamizha! * check Tamil is configured in your machine. if yes, go ahead. or please install Tamil from your windows installation CD. Regional settings in Control panel will help you! * If you are not satisfying the above stated point, tamil letters will be looked jumbled. ie, ku will be misinterpreted as ka+kombu! :( * Our friends who have tested this browser, saying that, the combined letters like kO, ko are misplaced. if first point has been satisfied, you can browse/mail with Tamil interface happily. Please spend some time in Thamizha and send your queries, suggestions, modifications to the team (via their website www.thamizha.com). Wish you a Happy Tamil Browsing!! nanRikaL! Hi pandian, Using it right NOW. Overall, its a very interesting experiance. --Nitpicking starts:)--- But I sometimes end up laughing at some of the translations for example for the 'Advanced' option (Edit -> preferences) the translation is uyartharamana. Doesnt uyartharamana mean High quality?. and sometimes I just dont get what a particular option means (Inayanillai and vattu parapu????). --Nitpicking ends--- But again it is alpha and it looks very very good from an end user perspective. Will surely use it (and file bugs as appropriate:))) bye, krishna ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ |
