[Gnuplot-info] fit a datafile through another datafile

Hi there,

I have a curve in a datafile that is supposed to be the weighted sum of other two curves. I wish to find the coefficients a,b for such sum so that curve1=curve2*a+curve3*b.
I tried with the following fit:

fit 0.0 "< paste curve1.dat curve2.dat curve3.dat" u 1:($2-$4*a-$6*b) via a,b

but it sticks with the "Singular matrix" error.
Is there any workaround for that?

There is no discernible difference in strace between the cases with and without |cat; the end looks like this:

Well, the Wx terminal also sits in poll, simply because that's the main even loop, I suppose. No difference to Qt there (just that it also succeeds in updating the coordinates).

So see "help contour" and tell us what's wrong with what it (and the 
links therein) teaches you.

That's because contours are, basically, not a 2D plot style.  They use 
3D data, so they're a 3D plot style.

No.  It's actually quite the opposite.  It's so small an order that it's 
absolutely astonishing the manual didn't suffice to get it done.

I have a long-standing problem with gnuplot's newer graphical
terminals, first the wxt one, now the qt one showing the same.
I brought this up on IRC some time ago, but without much success ...
and I admit that I tried to ignore the issue by defaulting to the x11
terminal. But, well, since this is spreading into the qt terminal, too,
I really would like to see the pattern investigated and fixed.

This is gnuplot 4.6 currently.

The issue can be reduced to this (on GNU/Linux):

shell$ echo 'set term x11; plot x' | gnuplot -persist | cat
shell$

That opens a x11 plot window which stays there and exits, giving me my
shell prompt back. But this,

shell$ echo 'set term qt; plot x' | gnuplot -persist | cat

just hangs there. Why is the terminal type making a difference here?
Gnuplot's input is closed ... why does it not close the output side?
And yes, I am aware that dropping the '| cat' would fix the behaviour,
but that would be missing the point as this is a very reduced example
for a wrapper script that wants to hook something on gnuplot's text
output.

I have just tried this code using gnuplot 4.6 in a .Net 4.0 project on 
Windows 7 machine, and I was not able to reproduce the problem. After 
the window was closed, execution returned to the main method. No hanging 
on WaitForExit.

location I provide) a 3-column ASCII text file of Polar coordinates and
renders to the screen a color plot.  I'd like to figure out how, presumably
in the script, to control "bin" limits for the Z-data, which of course
governs the resolution of the contour plot.  A way to label axes and post a
legend of contour intervals would be even better!

Is this a tall order?

I have hoped, that someone of you perhaps has already worked with a

Yes, neither for C# nor interactively.

Please try it. Just install the mono compiler und run my example. You
can find it here:

Compile the source file with (depending on your installation):

When setting the linetype that way two things happen

1) The plot becomes very slow...there is a long time between
   the according load command on the commandline of gnuplot
   and the appearance of the plot in the window. This
   does not happen when setting no linetypes.
2) The colors are not set according to the rb values as given
   above. Some doe much, some do match nearly and dont match.

What can I do to fix both problems?

It sounds like you want either "set label" or to "plot ... with
labels". They are explained in "help label" and "help labels"
respectively. There are demos at

Okay, adding the gnuplot to "bind Close 'exit gnuplot'" makes it work
as expected.

In interactive mode, it works for me, as you described. I don't have a C#
compiler, but from gnuplot's point of view, there should be no difference
between what you're doing in C# to write to gnuplot's STDIN and:
	echo bind Close 'exit gnuplot'; splot x+y; pause -1 | gnuplot.exe

And that works just fine for me. I can close the plot window with either
q or alt+F4 and I am returned to the command prompt.

If I add a print, e.g.:
	echo bind Close 'exit gnuplot'; splot x+y; pause -1; print 'got this far' | gnuplot.exe
the print never happens, suggesting the binding is indeed working.

Even adding a "set terminal windows" does not change the behavior
(with alt+F4 since the windows terminal doesn't accept q to close).

I'm using a 64-bit OS (Windows 2003). I wouldn't expect that to matter,

is it possible to read in a string from a data file and place this text in a
specific location on the graph? (I don't care where it goes as long as it is
displayed horizontally and is outside the axes.)  I am plotting many graphs
repeatedly and would like to display input parameters on each graph rather
than having to refer to each plot's data file to see what it was made from. 
I have been googling for hours and nothing has worked.  I now believe it's
probably not possible but if you have any suggestion that would be much
appreciated.

If this is not what you want perhaps you can suply a few sample data

It could just as easily be caused by the choice of terminal driver --- 
GUI subsystems like X11, native Win32, wxt and qt behave way differently 
under the hood.  gnuplot tries rather hard to hide that fact behind the 
curtain, but it's still there.

No, everything is ok in interactive mode. At least the plot window does
not freeze by hitting q. (I think you have to use bind Close "exit
gnuplot" instead.)
It works with linux, but with the same compiler for windows not. I would
guess the problem is MS or gnuplot.

Of course, the behavior of a pipe via C++ or C would be very
interesting.

I'm trying to create a jpeg file but for some annoying reason, it says jpeg
is an undefined variable. It works perfectly fine if I replace it with
eps, but not jpeg. Can you tell me if the above command lines are even
correct/any mistakes? I'm new to using Gnuplot.

Does this have anything to do with C# at all? Even interactively (4.6p0),
"bind Close exit" does not seem to work. Other things, like "bind close
print 'test'" do seem to work, so the binding happens but simply doesn't
work for quit/exit.

18000 y values, one per column.

The time between each value is one second.

Plotting this ends up in a x-axis with
numbers from "0" up to 72000 (20h).

It would be much readable, if this
would be number not from 0 to 72000
nbut from 0 to 20 in 0.25 steps.

How can I acchieve this ?

No, that doesn’t make a difference in this case. Even if you remove the
bind close line, the plot window freezes after hitting a key.

Nope.  Odds are our Mailman is configured to reject attachments to this 
list.

I'll venture a wild guess here: you might fare better with these two 
lines in the opposite order.  Generally speaking, it's usually best for 
the plot or splot command, if there's only one, to be the last in any 
script.
