Hi There are several examples on "how to plot histogram" using box and xticle. However I can not find information on how to plot a simple histogram from a file: 10 20 10 20 30 I want to see a plot like this (rotate it 90 deg counter clockwise). 0 10 * * * 20 * 30 * 40 50 The commands plot "f:\his.txt" u 1:xtic(1) or plot "f:\his.txt" u 1:with boxes doesn't work for me. So it opens the file all over again each time, reads one line at a time
until it gets to where it finished during the previous iteration, then reads
one matrix and loops again. That means the time goes up as N^2 rather than

preceding N-1 blocks altogether rather than processing
them line-by-line. It still has to read in the data, but it
won't bother to parse the contents of the lines you skip.
But really I think a better idea is to split the input into N separate files
and then iterate over which file is read.
That way it goes back to O(N) rather than O(N^2).

I just want to point out that you'll need version 4.6 and above. I say
this because I'm aware some people still use older versions,
particularly on university machines.

There is a recent patch in the CVS version that hugely speeds up reading binary matrices, but since the matrix you show is in ascii that wouldn't help. Hi, I am trying to make a plot of wind vs time. I want time on the X axis, the Y axis to be the speed and a fixed size vector at each data point indicating the wind direction. The ideal thing would be if I could specify the deltax and deltay size of each vector in pixels, or some other screen coordinate independent of the x and y ranges. Is this possible? I haven't been able to find any information about the above so I assume I will need to specify deltax as a time and figure out the right scaling. However I haven't been able to get this to work, the vectors always have zero length in the X dimension. I have: ... set xdata time set timefmt "%m/%d-%H:%M" ... plot 'foo.txt' using 1:2:3:4 with vectors Where the data file is like this: 05/17-11:00 6.33660511836 -00/00-00:55 -0.35963594262 05/17-14:00 4.52832308033 00/00-00:40 -0.731311736396 05/17-17:00 3.95676205159 00/00-00:59 0.0217798990928 I have tried various formats for the 3rd column but I have been unable to figure out how to make the vector plot work with time on the X axis. So from C++ point of view, due to the lack of length per data, there is no way to load a whole number, but it has to check when the number is loading. I guess this should be the reason of the slow plotting speed. Now I have 3 questions: Q1: Is loading the bottle neck? One method is to use awk within gnuplot, e.g.:
plot "< awk '{if(NR > minRow && NR < maxRow) { if($1 <= maxVal || $2
>= minVal) {print $0} }}' yourData.dat"
I have to be quite general here because I don't know the specifics of
your data format. awk will take yourData.dat, process it according to
the criteria you stated, and gnuplot will plot the result of awk's
processing.
Also, I've not tested the awk code above, but the general idea should
be correct.
