I am using gnuplot to generate a png file with default font settings. On my main PC I get a plot with a nice sans-serif font, while on a Raspberry Pi I get a different font which has slightly wider and lighter characters. Hi John, it is absolutely clear to me that negative values cannot be displayed in log scale. If I wanted them to be displayed I would use the absolute value abs(x). That should work for column data: plot "ColumnData.dat" u 1:(abs($2)) Actually, I couldn't tell how one could do abs(x) on matrix data??? Nevertheless, I want to *ignore* negative values. And I do not want to change all datafiles. Why is gnuplot displaying negative values in log scale as maximum value? Theo. |

As far as i know, negative values are a show stopper when using log
scaling. A fellow by the name of John McGinley devised a hack to plot data
that spanned 0 on opposing log scales by skipping near zero values and
using a mirrored (inverted) scale for negative values, but for normal folks
negative values are not defined for log scales.

Dear Experts, I am learning the gnu plotting. I have a simple problem. I have data file like this x y value_at_x_y error_on_value I would like to have the 3D plot with errors on the points Another question I fit this data with function of the type f(x,y). Now I would like to have plot of data points with the fit values for each bin of y so that my plots look like two dimensional ( in other words, I would like to have the projections of y on x) Any help will be appreciated. Ok, I tested this again (removing the color column and lc var) and it did the
right thing.

John, Thanks for the reply. To be clear, I am not referring to the tics on the x-axis, but the points on a linespoints curve in the graph. Specifically, I want to be able to set the point interval for the points on the line in an exponential fashion, rather than a linear option for "point interval". In other words, if I have have 1000 (x,y) points to plot, I would like a linespoints curve with point markers at (x1,y1), (x10,y10), (x100,y100), (x1000,y1000).Is it possible to do that? Hi, I am using the epslatex terminal available in gnuplot for making plots. I am plotting data on a linear y axis and logarithmic x axis. I would like to plot the data with linespoints so the different curves can easily be differentiated from one another. Specifying the point interval option, however, does not look very good on a logarithmic x axis, because for large x values you essentially get many points overlapping each other. Is it possible to use a logarithmically-spaced point interval, so that points will become evenly spaced in the x direction on a logarithmic x axis? To give an example, instead of point every 10 units (which will become very crowded for x > 100), can I place the points at x=1,10,100,1000,10000? Thanks, Matthew |

And why are you appending a blank to each line? both items are leftovers from prior work. if I didn't have the wc at the end of this and just output the first element on each line, gnuplot would disregard the newline and run them all together into one string, adding a space on the end of each line avoids this. In my case, the data is already sorted by the SQL, so I wouldn't need to sort it again (although in the case of creating the pie charts, it's only one line per datacenter, so the uniq and the sed are not needed. Doing some more digging, I'm finding that the colors used for the key legend are
not the colors used for the linetype definitions that are used to make the graph
I changed the lines to

I didn't know I was running Gnuplot 5.0.0 until just now, when I went to confirm the version (I think it used to be 4.6.5 or something). Comparing the result of "test" with an old one that I'd printed (and laminated), there's a few small differences such as points now being black instead of the line colour and pattern fill "9" has disappeared, but the colours have changed somewhat, for no apparent good reason. As a result I know have to change *all* of my scripts, except in those cases where I was using RGB colours. I am having difficulties understanding the precise meaning of the "error" facility within the fit command. Can someone clarify? 1) The documentation mentions three "keywords": zerror yerror error z Are the synonyms? Or are there semantic differences? Is "error z" a fixed phrase, or is it also possible to have "error x" or something like that? 2) In the demos I found an example using "xyerror", which is not mentioned in the docs. What does that do? How does weighting the x-values enter into the calculation of the error (=SSR)? 3) What does the presence of zerror actually tell me (or gnuplot)? Is it correct to say that WITH "zerror" the last entry in the "using" spec is interpreted as the error column, whereas with "noerror", the last column is interpreted as the "y-value", and errors (=weights) are set equal to 1? Are there exceptions to this rule? |
