As a user I want the ability to switch between a continuous or discrete palette, and I shouldn't need to condense my 256 color palette down to 8 colors myself in order to achieve this. It seems to me that should be the purpose of the maxcolors feature. Since I manage to get my desired result in the 'x11' terminal I will continue using that. But it sounds like when I try to print to png or pdf, I may end up with a different plot. Could I request that the maxcolors be changed to automatically define discrete color levels even if more colors are provided in the palette? |

Gnuplot version 5 does contain a new palette option that is in somewhat the same spirit as the Moreland schemes you refer to. Apparently the problem is with the default terminal 'qt' in 5.0. If I change to: set term x11 then the set palette maxcolors command works again. Dear Gnuploters, I use the splot command with some data file for 3D rendering with "wire" mode (no surfaces, facets ad the like). My datafiles provides collections of vertexes (polylines) representing the edges of 3D solid shapes managed by some external library. This is particularly useful to check/visualize if some virtual geometry setup is correct, helping to detect solid overlap... Unfortunately, the splot driver regularly and automatically switches to 'grid data' mode, adding annoying segments to connect some vertexes where I do not want to use this "isolines" features. Reading the doc explains why it works lie, this: <cite from="Gnuplot documentation"> If all datablocks contain the same number of points, gnuplot will draw cross-isolines between datablocks, connecting corresponding points. </cite> Example: here I want to draw 2 parallel vertical segments AB and CD: <pre> gnuplot> splot '-' with line 0 0 0 # vertex A 0 0 1 # vertex B 1 0 0 # vertex C 1 0 1 # vertex D e </pre> As both datablocks have 2 lines, the 'grid data' is activated and it plots a vertical square ABDC in place of my only 2 segments! For now I was not able to find a way (through a special option or command) that would inhibit this feature and I am forced to add arbitrary vertexes to break the 'grid data' feature: <pre> gnuplot> splot '-' with line 0 0 0 # vertex A 0 0 0.5 # trick: vertex 0.5*(A+B) is an additional mid-point for the first segment 0 0 1 # vertex B 1 0 0 # vertex C 1 0 1 # vertex D e </pre> this restores my "2 segments" plot because datablocks don't have the same number of vertexes. I'd like to know if there is some kind of "unset grid data" command or "splot 'a.data' index 0 nogriddata with lines" option ti inhibit this feature. If not it would be very useful to have it in gnuplot. I just want to plot a collection of simple polylines with arbitrary number of vertexes, no emulated grid-ed surfaces. Hi, there seems to be a bug in plotting data with rgbimage, at least using the png terminal: The image is somehow shifted with respect to the canvas, such that there is a white line at one border and lost pixel lines at the opposing border. So... unset log cb set cbrange [*:*] noextend plot $DATA matrix using 1:2:(log($3)) with image Of course this is a different mapping of z value -> color than before. In principle you could also manually re-map the palette definition using set palette functions R(gray), G(gray), B(gray) [but I have not actually tested this] Ethan |

set style colors <classic|default|podo>
rather than
set colorsequence <classic|default|podo>
just to be in sync with specifications like:
set style line, set style arrow, set style <whatsoever>?

Some fixes went into the code recently, but I am not convinced that it is working consistently even now. I suggest that if possible you re-work your plot so that it does not require log-scaling on the colorbar. Note that the trick shown above (resetting negative values to NaN) will cause the corresponding pixels of a "with image" plot to be omitted altogether - that is, the background color will show through. This is unrelated to the min or max values on the color bar.
