Hi Henry, I had a similar problem like you. I figured out that gnuplot overwrites the output file (in your case "plot.ps") with an empty postscript file if you don't set output again before replot! That means: set term postscript set output "plot.ps" replot !lp plot.ps set output set term x11 replot That must solve your problem! Regards, Bernd Henry FISCHER schrieb: > Dear gnuplot-info, > > I'm running the following gnuplot on a SuSe 9.3 Linux PC: > > G N U P L O T > Version 4.0 patchlevel 0 > last modified Thu Apr 15 14:44:22 CEST 2004 > System: Linux 2.6.11.4-21.9-default > > Copyright (C) 1986 - 1993, 1998, 2004 > Thomas Williams, Colin Kelley and many others > > In general I use the following command file for printing plots: > > # gnuplot command file to write "plot.ps" with most recent plot, send > the *.ps > # file to the default printer, and then return to X11 and refresh the > screen. > set term postscript > set output "plot.ps" > replot > !lp plot.ps > set term x11 > replot > > -- which still works for the printer, but I'm not able to visualize the > outputed plot.ps file using gv or display: I just get a blank white screen. > The size of the plot.ps file is correct -- perhaps it's missing a showpage? > Again, the printer prints it fine, I just can visualise it -- I tried > converting > it to *.pdf using ps2pdf, but that didn't help. > > Is my command file above the right way to generate and print a *.ps file? > > Thanks for your help, > > -- Henry Fischer > > |

Dear gnuplot-info,
I'm running the following gnuplot on a SuSe 9.3 Linux PC:
G N U P L O T
Version 4.0 patchlevel 0
last modified Thu Apr 15 14:44:22 CEST 2004
System: Linux 2.6.11.4-21.9-default
Copyright (C) 1986 - 1993, 1998, 2004
Thomas Williams, Colin Kelley and many others
In general I use the following command file for printing plots:
# gnuplot command file to write "plot.ps" with most recent plot, send
the *.ps
# file to the default printer, and then return to X11 and refresh the
screen.
set term postscript
set output "plot.ps"
replot
!lp plot.ps
set term x11
replot
-- which still works for the printer, but I'm not able to visualize the
outputed plot.ps file using gv or display: I just get a blank white screen.
The size of the plot.ps file is correct -- perhaps it's missing a showpage?
Again, the printer prints it fine, I just can visualise it -- I tried
converting
it to *.pdf using ps2pdf, but that didn't help.
Is my command file above the right way to generate and print a *.ps file?
Thanks for your help,
-- Henry Fischer

Is there a config file somewhere that you can change it? No. The behaviour you observe is a bug, which I think was fixed around the time of the 4.0 release. You're not by any chance using a pre-4.0 binary, are you? If so, I strongly suggest you update immediately, or wait a little longer for the upcoming 4.2. |

If you don't know you do, you have it. But that's not your problem.
The problem is that you built your own gnuplot, but failed to install
enough of the other packages first so the build of gnuplot could work
well. In particular, you're missing the "development" part of the X11
installation.
> Could you please explain how can I installing the binary RPM?
This is not the place to get problems with basic use of a Linux
distribution solved. Frankly, if you can't manage to install RPM's off
your CDs, building your own gnuplot is beyond your skills.

Of course you do, for two reasons:
1) There's one 't' too many in those commands you tried, which rather
directly prevents it from generating GIF files.
2) You went back to try-and-error immediately after reading 'help set
term', but didn't bother to read 'help set output', too, as you had been
told to.
But the real problem is probably elsewhere: just as you don't have X11
development installed, you almost certainly don't have any GIF-writing
development packages installed either.

How can I find that I have X11 in my LINUX?
Could you please explain how can I installing the binary RPM?
When I eg. try
set term tgif
plot sin(x)
i get lines like this:
.....
poly('black',5,[

Hi Reza,
'help set terminal'
on a gnuplot-commandline ought to be your friend ....
Moreover, 'help set output' will tell you how to get those data into files =
so=20
you can further process them.
man gnuplot isn't too bad, either.
Take care

Hello, I just installed gnuplot-4.0.0 on LINUX REDHAT 9. After running I get: Terminal type set to 'unknown' I am able to change it using 'set term' to a list of available terminal types but none of them( that I have tried so far) provide me any graphical result. Furthermore when I exit and again run the gnuplot I get again "Terminal type set to 'unknown' ". Could you please let me know how can I fix this problem in order to get graphical plots and then save those as gif or JPG or ... files? Thanks Reza |

No. But usually, this can be avoided by choosing a less strange font. gnuplot does try to avoid this problem, but if it's wrongly informed (or has to guess, and gets it wrong) about the the font's actual size, all kinds of bad things can happen. Pick a fixed-width font, and use a terminal where gnuplot has a realistic chance of actually *knowing* how big the font is. > Next question: my z-axis ranges from -0.2 to 1.8. Hi there, I have the problem, that using splot the tics labels overlap the x and y axes. Is there a way to "move" them a bit far from the axes? Next question: my z-axis ranges from -0.2 to 1.8. The plots start at around -0.05 or something. How can I make the z axis not showing the -0.2. It should start to show tics from 0 to 1.8. The Problem is that also the first tics label of the xaxis overlap with this -0.2. |

No, but since gnuplot doesn't support skipping a part of the axis range in the first place, that's not exactly a major pain ;-P If you want a broken axis, you have to do it all manually: place the break marks as 'set arrow ... nohead', partially in 'graph' coordinates, transform the input data, place the ticks, everything. |

thank you very much.:)
I have another question ,
How can I run a shell command and return its result?
for example:
-----------------------------------------
pre_number =3D 2
read(n) =3D sprintf(" sed -n '%dp' b.txt ",n)
execmd=3D read(pre_number)
tmp =3D ` execmd `
#tmp =3D ` sed '2d' b.txt `
-----------------------------------------
error code is:
"ploter.plt", line 8: constant expression required
can you give me a tip?

I am trying to annotate a plot (colored postscript output) by writing annotations (set label command) over the plotted data (text is black, data is red). Is there anyway to make gnuplot do this? |
