Just out of curiosity: why did you refer (only) to examples instead of

The combination of these two may not work very well.  They're both 
global display mode changes, and they disagree on how the plot should be 
done.

You'll want to use the "using" specification.  I suspect you need 
version 4.2 for that to work with 'matrix' data.

The tick labels are output in the default font of the terminal.  That's 
the one you chose in the "set terminal" command.  And update to 4.2 
would offer more flexibility.

comes in the shape of a matrix and, by looking at the examples [I am
running Gnuplot 4.0 on my box] I put together the script:

I am almost done, but something is still missing.
For instance, the x and y axes simply count the number of data sets
there, whereas I would like to put my own scale over on those axis.
Other questions: I find the information in the official tutorial a bit
too scattered and I would like to know where I can find answers to my
previous question and to the following:
1) How to relocate the color bar? I am asking because some of the
numbers which go with it are somehow "cut" in the resulting plot.
2)choosing the font, the dimension of the axis labels, the dimension

terminal I still get to gnuplo 4.0 how can I enter to the new version, I did
everything that came in the install file. Please help!!!

[Gnuplot-info] plot with title

Hi,

I need some help.
I'm trying to plot a graph.

Right now I use

plot 'file.dat' using ($1):($2) title 2 with lines 

This command plots column two of my file over column 1 and adds the title
read out of the file (first row in column 2).

But now i want to add something to the title. This means i want a new title
using the title out of the file and an other string. I tryed it with
sprintf("%s additional text", 2) but this won't work because gnuplot
interprets 2 as integer and not als index to column 2.

Any idea how to fix that problem?

In GNUplot 4.2 (patch level 0), the `scansbackward' and `scansforward'
options of `pm3d' seem to be broken: when adding one of them, surfaces
are no longer colored; instead, only the grid is visible.

You've painted yourself into a bit of a corner there.  By trying to use 
  the exact same script work for all those data files, you're hiding the 
very information from gnuplot that you want it to use.  It would be 
easier to supply the actual filename as an argument of a called script 
(--> help call).

And by doing this on MS Windows, of all platforms, you've cut yourself 
off from the usual workaround based on substitution, as in

	working_dir="`pwd`"

The Cygwin version, e.g., doesn't have this problem.

you can do this automatically by doing a dummy plot in ascii graphics to the
terminal.
in this plot only every fifth data point is drawn, this is used to set the
tics labels.
and afterwards the real plot is done, without redefining the tics labels.
and - don't forget to delete the tics labels if you want to do a second plot
with
different data within the same gnuplot session ('set xtics auto').

set style data histograms
set style fill solid
set tics out
set terminal dumb
plot 'in.dat' using (int($1)%5 == 0 ? $2 : 1/0):xtic(1)
set terminal pdf

modify this list after the first plot and then plot again without xtic():

or

do something completely different also resulting in a histogram:

I think you need to set output to something else to close the file and  
flush the buffer. Changing the terminal is not doing this.

I'm trying to plot a simple histogram to a PDF file, using the following sc=
ript:gnuplot - <<$$$set terminal pdfset style data histogramsset style fill=
 solidset tics outset output 'out.pdf'plot 'in.dat' using 2:xtic(1)$$$'in.d=
at' contains histogram data in the following format:45 046 047 048 149 150 =
051 152 253 954 1555 656 357 358 159 160 161 062 263 064 165 0The resulting=
 output  is a lovely histogram, with the x axis labelled using column 1.The=
 problem is that _every_ tic is labelled, which becomes unreadable when the=
re's a lot of bins.Is there a way to suppress some of the labels?I know I'm=
 using the histogram plot in a pretty simplistic way - am I using it incorr=

Got it - although I'm not running the X server, the environment variable DI=
SPLAY is set.If I unset it, both your example and my script run without gen=
