This is my first mail to this list - so hello to you all! First posts often go hand in hand with problems. So here is mine ;-): I work on some 3D plots of ternary phase diagrams (used in chemistry and mineralogy) and I already solved most problems involved but one. The base of such a plot is a triangle and not a rectangle - as the picture shows, when I plot data using dgrid3d the generated layer (red) is a rectangle but I really need this layer to exactly fit the base triangle! Is there a way to do this? Thanks you in advance. There's a simpler way, but not a very simple one.
yt(y)= (y <= 0.3) ? y : (y - 0.8 + 0.3 + 0.05)
set ytics (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, \
'0.8' yt(0.8), '0.9' yt(0.9), '1.0' yt(1))

Great, it works now. For the journal I am trying to submit to, they have a graphics checker to verify the submitted graphics are in a valid form. It indicates that I need to embed the fonts (times-roman) into the eps file. When I change the command: set term eps enhanced font "Times-Roman,22" to set term eps enhanced font "Times-Roman,22" fontfile '/sw/share/texmf-dist/fonts/type1/urw/times/utmr8a.pfb' running the identical and successful eps output previously now results in a EPSTOOL failure: epstool --test-eps Fig1_TGA.eps DSC Warning At line 1870: %%EndProlog %%BeginProcSet: / %%EndProcSet The number of Begin and End comments do not match. Specifing just a max range within which data has to be until the plot is split. I think I'll create a big resolution plot and use gimp to do the splitting. Thanks for the answer. Lynx |

Hello! I'm looking for a way to make gnuplot cut out a part of the x-axis where there is no data. I don't know how this is called. Often it's used in time lines where there were no incidents for a long time but then again many in short periods. To make those important small period be easyly visible the big uninmportant part is skipped by to // in the axis. Can gnuplot do that? How is it called? Thanks, Lynx PS: I'm not (yet) in the mailinglist |

jfcarrol wrote: > set term postscript eps enhanced > plot ..... > set output "~/*.eps" > replot > save "~/.gnu" > quit > > Is there something incorrect with this procedure? This sequence doesn't make terribly much sense. The first "plot" output goes to your gnuplot session's standard output. Then you change the output to a disk file (whose name is illegal as stated, but I'll take it the actual name doesn't have a '*' in it), and recreate the same output to that file. So you create *two* PostScript outputs --- why? If what you really wanted is to create an EPS file, the recommended procedure would be set .... # all your settings here... set term postscript eps enhanced set output "~/foo.eps" plot ..... set output If you actually wanted the EPS to go to the standard output stream, drop both "set output" commands. For the meaning of "set output", please see the documentation. You don't really need the "save" command unless you want to record the exact circumstances of the plot for posterity. The 'quit' isn't needed either. |

To the GNUPLOT Project:
I am new at bug reports; please advise if this should be reported
in a different format.
'SET TIMESTAMP ERROR'
SUMMARY
In giving the gnuplot command
set timestamp rotate -1,4 (1)
it is necessary to give the xoff value (here -1) if yoff (here 4) is
given. Using
set timestamp rotate ,4 (2)
(which assumes the default xoff=0) may give an error message.
The error message (with plot termination) occurs for gnuplot 4.2 .
But gnuplot 4.0 accepts command (2) and gives the expected plot
result.
DISCUSSION
The timestamp error I report here is either
a) a bug in gnuplot 4.2 or
b) a typo in the gnuplot manual:
. "gnuplot, An Interactive Plotting Program"
. manual prepared by Dick Crawford
. Last editted: 2004/04/13 17:23:36 .
I therefore send this as both a "comment" and a "bug report".
The cited manual, p.143, sec. 36.63 "Timestop" gives for the
command syntax
set timestamp ... {<xoff>} {,<yoff>} . (3)
This syntax implies that command (2) is a valid command. If giving
a yoff value requires giving xoff also, then the syntax should be
specified as
set timestamp ... {<xoff> {,<yoff>}} . (4)
In my tests, I use command (2) as one of several lines of command
in a script file 'plotorb'; I also put the command "load 'plotorb'" in
a hidden file .gnuplot . When I call gnuplot through the command line,
I get the error message
. set timestamp rotate ,4
. ^
. "plotorb", line 4: invalid expression .
This occurs using GNUPLOT Version 4.2 patchlevel 0
. last modified March 2007
. System: Linux 2.6.20-1.2952.fc6
[changing to 'set timestamp rotate 0,4' cures the problem].
As stated previously, I found no problem in using command (2) with
. GNUPLOT Version 4.0 patchlevel 0
. last modified 15 April 2004
. System: Linux 2.6.22.1-41.fc7

I am a relatively new to gnuplot, but typically this is how I export my files: set term postscript eps enhanced plot ..... set output "~/*.eps" replot save "~/.gnu" quit Is there something incorrect with this procedure? You have to "set output" without a filename argument for that. <- I don't understand this comment? Is this possible? No. wgnuplot is a graphical Windows application. As such it has no channel to output such information to, other than its own own text window. You need a console version of gnuplot, e.g. the Cygwin version, compiled without X11 support. |

Hello I have a servlet which calls GnuPlot to run in batch to generate a graph from instructions and data files passed to it. The servlet then displays the graph to the user. What I want to know is, if an exception is detected by GnuPlot during it's processing of the instructions causing the generation of the graph to fail, is it possible to catch this in code and possibly report what that error is? For example, when running manually: set title "" 0, 0, 0 font "arial, 12" show title set xlabel "Accelera" font "arial, 10" set ylabel "Accelera" font "arial, 10" set zlabel "Air" offset 4 font "arial, 10" set xrange [6.6 : 50] set yrange [45 : 90] set zrange [1.3 : 35.6] set dgrid3d 30, 30, 40 set view 40, 30, 1, 1 set grid x y z set border unset key set pm3d splot "data.txt" using 2:3:4 with lines, "data.txt" using 2:3:4:1 with labels set output "graph.png" set term png size 1024, 768 replot set terminal win reset Over data: # (X, Y, Z) + 6.6 59 1.3 + 6.6 59 1.3 + 6.6 59 1.3 + 7.3 65 4.2 + 7.3 65 3.7 + 7.3 65 4.4 + 50 45 35.6 + 50 45 32.4 + 50 45 31 + 10 90 15.5 + 10 90 15.8 + 10 90 16.8 # where X is Accelera, # Y is Accelera and # Z is Air. GnuPlot gives an error message: "instructions.txt", line 15: error in edge3d_intersect I would like to catch this message in batch so as to tell the user that GnuPlot has encountered an error. Is this possible? Thanks Martin O'Shea. |

I am using gnuplot on a OSX 10.4. (granted I usually place all my graphics in LaTex but unfortunately I need to do this one in WORD) I recognize that when I import the eps files to WORD there is no preview file in the eps gnuplot file and the figure will appear upon printing to a postscript printer. Again unfortunately, my fellow colleagues, first see this as a WORD error and after explaining it to them they want it fixed so they don't have to print out the document everytime. I have been trying to use the epstool utility app, but when I run a "epstool --test-eps *.eps *_out.eps" it indicates: PostScript appears well behaved. File claims to be EPS. FAIL: File does not comply with EPS specification. Failed I have tried to use several other options (such as gs), but the error seems to originate from the gnuplot term postscript. How does one make the export from gnuplot comply within EPS specifications? I thought once a file is eps it should be "univerisal" in some sense? Normally my term is set to: set term poscript eps enhanced, but I have also tried, set term postscript enhanced and convert the files (gs again) to eps, but I receive the same errors when I try to attach the preview file with epstool. I have read at the other forums, google groups, that OMniGraffle is another option, but it seems like epstool shoud be the quick route. Something seems to wrong from the eps output from gnuplot???? Dear gnuplot users
I saw in new gnuplot version 4.2 that is possible to open images
using commands like in the following example (in help binary example):
plot '<file_name>' binary array=512x1024:1024x512 format='%uchar' \
dx=2:1 dy=1:2 origin=(0,0):(1024,1024) flipy u 1:2:3 w rgbimage
It is possible to open image files in PPM or PGM format, instead of rgbimage?
Thanks
