the easiest way to solve the problem:
replace the output filename ('dest') in routine 'term_set_output' in
'term.c' with the fully expanded filename just before opening the file.
there would be two functions for this:
realpath() and canonicalize_file_name()
but
realpath() - it's manpage says one should avoid this function
canonicalize_file_name() - is only existing on systems with glibc
and - both are unable to do tilde-expansion.
this wouldn't be a problem, if they would return NULL in this case, but
realpath() produces a segmentation fault on some systems (e.g. SuSE 10.3).
i think, a remark in the manual that 'cd' shouldn't be used after 'set
output ...' and before 'plot ...' is the best one could do in the moment.

Hello Mr.Br=C3=B6ker, Thanks for your help. I got what you want to explain about pipe. I used the pipe to send commands to gnuplot from Visual Basic (Shell and Sendkeys functions in VB). =20 But my gnuplot command is a curve fitting function for which initially I guess parameter values a and b and then gnuplot will do fitting and display final set of parameters.=20 Now my question is that is there any way by which gnuplot can store, send back those a and b variables to VB and then I pipe these final values again to gnuplot. This can give me complete automation. Hi, I tried to plot an overlay contour plot over a pm3d map, with labels. I encountered 2 issues: 1) The cited code example at http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/scripts/index.html#tricks-here does not work, it seems outdated. Thank you for your explanations. From a technical point of view now I can understand what's going on.
My point is that this should be changed for usability reasons. In my opinion a user changing output via ``set output "foo.tex"'' expects foo.tex and foo.eps to be in the same directory. Do you disagree?
Of course I have no idea how difficult it is to change that and how many things it breaks.

Dear gnuplot, I am writing to suggest that for the histep verticals, gnuplot should =20= use the halfway point calculated *before* taking logs. I attach a plot of equally spaced data in 100 bins of 10 MeV. The =20 first bin with content is the bin 10-20 MeV. The lower vertical =20 should be halfway between 5 and 15 MeV, namely at 10 MeV, but gnuplot =20= places it at the point halfway between ln(5) and ln(15), namely exp(ln=20= (5) + (ln(15)-ln(5))/2) =3D 8.66. Misleading. As well as the plot I attach data and a file of gnuplot commands. pixel graphics are a bad choice for publications. it's better to use vector graphics, which are scalable without quality loss, like 'eps', 'svg', 'emf' - depends on what your word version prefers (emf?) Hi, when using set terminal epslatex set output "foo.tex" cd ".." plot sin(x) there is a file foo.tex in the subdir and a file foo.eps in the top dir. On the contrast, when using absolut paths: set terminal epslatex set output "~/subdir/foo.tex" cd ".." plot sin(x) both files are inside the subdir. For me as a user, the first behavior is very irritating. I would call it a bug. I think that foo.tex and foo.eps should be in the same directory. cd should not have an effect on an already specified output file. depends on what you mean by 'generate a file' if you are generating the file containing labels and coefficients with a program, you could generate the whole plot command instead and let gnuplot execute it as a script file.
