[Gnuplot-info] Strings instead of numbers on x-axis

Hi,

I'd like to put strings instead of numbers on the x-axis. I've got some data
where each name (string) refers to a value. Is it even possible to plot
this? I tried to plot a data file where the first columns contains the
names, the second the values, but I get the error message: x range is
invalid
