'set pm3d' also sets 'implicit' on, so each plot is plotted with the
standard surface (i.e. 'with points') plus the pm3d-surface.

to avoid this either
'set pm3d explicit' and use 'splot ... with pm3d'
or
'set style data pm3d' and use 'splot ...'

Good point. I tried at first to attach a screenshot, but that is apparently not possible in the mailing list. However I will send you one via seperate personal email if you don't mind. The data file is quite large, so I couldn't post it.

I'd say that's exactly the point. I don't know whether it's possible to tell gnuplot to only link gridpoints that are not further apart than a certain distance. But actually it happens that gridpoints from opposite edges of the domain are connected. Sadly, also pm3d is not working.

Dear gnuplot users,

I would be very happy and thankful for quick advice on the following:

I am using a data file with three columns:

x y z

They are however not at all ordered in size.

splot 'data' u 1:2:3 w l palette
results in the graph with too many gridpoints unnecessarily connected.

As one can easily see, too many points are connected with each other. Does anybody have any clue on how to avoid is? (Such as drawing lines only between nearest neighbors on this nonrectangular grid?)
Unfortunately, also pm3d does not work.

I also use Suse 11.3 with gnuplot 4.4, usually with the wxt terminal, but for this task I need dashed lines, which are not available in the wxt terminal. I also played with encoding settings ...
What can I do?

ok, so I've allready had this problem with another piece of software, and somebody 
told me the trick: when you associate a file type to a binary, Ubuntu automatically 
creates a launcher in $HOME/.local/share/applications. The default behaviour is that 
is does not open a terminal when the app is launched. To make this happen, edit the 
launcher and add a line:
Terminal=true
This way, you get the 2 windows, terminal+gnuplot GUI.
However, to get the pause correctly working (quiting when keyboard hit), the focus 
must be on the terminal (can't remember if this was true on Windows too ?)

Mmmh, my experience tells me its better to have a console, because thats where 
important messages (errors, warnings, whatever...) get printed out.
But it does work allright too, I didn't know about CTRL-q.

I would like to use characters like "€", "äöüß" or "³" in the X11 terminal.
That works without problems, unless I specify a font size when setting the terminal.

what works:
set term x11
set title "Test äöü߀³"
plot x*x

what doesn't work:
set term x11 font ",20"
set title "Test äöü߀³"
plot x*x

This is too much for me ;-).
Who can help?

That's caused by you doing this entirely from the GUI.  Console gnuplot 
needs a console for you to input that <Return> to end pause -1.  Without 
a console (i.e. a command-line shell from which you invoked gnuplot), 
there's nowhere for that keypress to come from, i.e. no stdin.  That is 
treated as an immediate termination of the script.

You'll want to look up "pause mouse" in the help.

Or you could just stick with the need-to-close-the-window, -persist 
mode.  Typing q or Ctrl-q in that window should work, too, though.

What kind of processor you have isn't particularly relevant.  The 
important thing is what mode your Windows runs it in, i.e. is that a

You should set that aside.  Start by using gnuplot _yourself_, manually. 
  You need to establish what works, and how, before you hand over 
control to a program.

Looks like you somehow defaulted to a non-text font (Symbol, WingDings 
or whatever).  You'll have to configure your fonts before you go on.

Which terminal driver do you use there?  WXT, Windows, or some graphics 
file format?

Thank you for your answer, that was indeed the reason. Actually, I didn't explicitly
add this flag manually, but through the wxWidgets GUI, that has a "Terminal
configuration" dialog with the "persist" toggle option.

The problem is that if I don't set this "on", then the plot/GUI doesn't stay on the
screen, and closes instantly. So, as usual (I mean, this is what I do with Windows),
I add:
pause -1
at the end of the file. And, for some mysterious reason, gnuplot just ignores this
statement, and has the same behaviour (closing the window when finished plotting).

So, what's the best way to go ?

Yes, I indeed used to use the "wgnuplot" binary. However, I never had to bother to 
consider this "persist" option (discovered that today).

;-) You are absolutely right, what I meant (lets be precise...) is that trying to
close the window by clicking the usual button didn't do anything, and my faithfull OS 
noticed this behaviour, and kindly asked me if I'd like him to "force it" to close

I have used gnuplot on windows XP for a short while and now I
changed for windows 7 and a 64 bit processor. I'm running gp442win32.
I'm calling gnuplot from a c++ program compiled with codeblocks.
On
windows 7, the graphs open with all plots correctly plotted but all text
is badly displayed:
minus sign turns into a capital a with a weird
sign on,
dot turns into a c, space turns into a rectangle...
The
graphs are hardly understandable in the end.

It looks like a
font compatibility problem but I have no clue how to solve this.
I
tried looking for a 64 bit specific version of gnuplot but couldn't.
Do you have an idea on what to do?

That's the information I was missing. I saw the reply and assumed
it couldn't be moderation because others had apparently replied

What's wrong is that you're trying to use a format string only usable 
for time/date axes without switching that axis to time/date format.

See "help set xdata"

The problem is that these mailing lists are, like all mail addresses, 
under constant barrage by spammers.  The only way to keep the amount of 
spam that passes through to the subscribers under some level of control 
is to restrict submissions to the list to subscribed members only.  All 
other entries, hopefully including all the spam, get held in a filter.

Unfortunately that means that somebody has to go through those blocked 
entries and decide which of them to pass on into the list, and which to 
throw away.  That somebody is me.  I'm supposed to regularly get a mail 
from SF.net whenever there's something to decide, so I'll log in to the 
administrative interface and handle those pending requests.  So yes, 
there's a lag.

Now for some strange reason I haven't discovered yet, those reminder 
mails seem to have got stuck in some massive delay loop.  Most of the 
reminders from October have arrived only _yesterday_!  I had 
optimistically assumed the flood of entries had subsided a bit.  Turns 
out only the regular reminders got stuck.  So the lag, which is usually 
on the order of one day, got seriously extended for a while.

Faced with the choice between blocking those entries altogether, and 
letting them through even after a rather massive delay, I chose the latter.

Those guys are a yet another nuisance.  Nabble misrepresents itself as 
running a mailing list of their own, when they're actually just 
shadowing ours, with their own advertisement added to the bottom.
Since their users aren't subscribed to the actual list, their 
submissions get held as possible spam, so they never reach the real list 
--- only those people subscribing to Nabble's fake.

That doesn't stop other users (I assume you know who you are...) reading 
through Nabble's fake mailing list from replying, though.  If the 
replier is subscribed to the real list, his answers get through 
immediately.  Once I get informed about the question held as possible 
spam, I pass them through, so that's why you sometimes get answers 
considerably earlier than their questions.

Yes. I too receive severely delayed e-mails from this list (sometimes a 
month old or so).

did not forward the message on to my email server until Tue, 14 Dec 2010
22:18:03 +0000. Am I the only one to experience these delays? Does anybody
know why sourceforge is witholding these messages?
