I want APO to only affect my microphone not my speakers and I can't figure out why it only works when both are selected I am completely new to equalizers and audio and need help.

I guess you're using the Configuration Editor of Equalizer APO. If so, then first add a device selection command (green plus -> Control -> Device) and in this command select your mic. Then beneath this command add your EQ commands or whatever commands you want to have solely on your mic.

Alternatively you could take a look at the Peace equalizer. There you select your mic in the Peace devices list and start equalizing it through the EQ sliders.

Also, sometimes Equalizer APO doesn't work out of the box on a mic. Usually this caused by the app wanting exclusive access to a mic. But this bypasses any Audio Process Object (read sound enhancement/effect) like Equalizer APO.

      That's exactly it. Well done.

But first, remove your VST plugins so only the pre amp is left. Now your voice must get louder or softer during dialing the pre amp. If not, then Equalizer APO doesn't work on it (hence Peace can't work).

No problem. Does Equalizer APO already work on your mic?
