Hello there I would greatly appreciate a small amount of your time to assist with my doctoral research at The University of Newcastle. The research concerns open source licensing and we're seeking developers working on Java projects. The research is supervised, ethics-approved, anonymous and results will be freely available. Participation will also provide a custom licensing report for your project. To learn more, please visit: http://licensing-research.newcastle.edu.au Thanks for reading this email, and I hope you'll consider participating. Best regards Ben Alex (My apologies for being off-topic; this list will not be emailed again) |

Ola, I don't know if it would have been possible to use Skype to listen in, but I am in any case at a senior management meeting on Mpumalanga province on Wednesday, so I can't do it even if I wanted (but it is something to consider for the future). (- sorry for potential cross-posting...) Hi all, Time: Wednesday April 6 at 14.15-16 Store Aud. Event: BEKK Consulting (www.bekk.no) will give a guest lecture on the use of Open Source Java frameworks and technologies by commercial and professional actors such as BEKK Consulting. BEKK by Evinid Waaler, will emphasize on how they use Spring Framework, Hibernate, WebWork, Maven, JUnit and Middlegen in their software development projects, and also talk about their role in Open Source Software Development. This is a lecture you shouldnt miss and also a potential job opportunity . BEKK contacted us after reading about INF5750 on the web and it is clear that they want to get in touch with graduate students that are familiar with these technologies. This lecture will be open to all students at IFI, but is given especially for INF5750 students or those of you that dropped earlier this year, but still have an interest in this topic. Hope to see you all there! Ola |

Hello everybody, I'm happy to see that the Confluence wiki on http://www.hisp.info is working well now (also from here in Hue, Vietnam). I encourage everyone to help make it a vibrant documentation and collaboration platform. At the same time, I would very much like to revive this list, which has been sleeping for a long time. As a start, here are some links about leading edge web frameworks: For HTML interfaces, there are now some very interesting open source Java web frameworks, the primary ones being Tapestry (and the newer, simpler Wicket) og WebWork (used for Confluence). Lately, an alternative framework, Ruby on Rails has recieved a lot of attention, e.g on Slashdot http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/01/21/1514234&tid=156 What makes it very interesting is that one of the leading voices of the open source java community, Matt Raible, is fascinated by its simplicity, and so is Dave Thomas, of "Pragmatic Programmer" fame. This means it's probably worth a look for us also, esp. as we are looking for a rapid development of web data entry tool for places like Kerala. I include some links below, especially to Raible's blog, which I highly recommend as daily reading for everyone in DHIS2 development. He has recently blogged on both Rails, Maven and Jasper Reports. http://raibledesigns.com/page/rd/20050121 http://raibledesigns.com/comments/rd/sunsets/re_hype_ruby_on_rails#comments http://www.artima.com/weblogs/viewpost.jsp?thread=77745 http://www.loudthinking.com/arc/000399.html http://raibledesigns.com/comments/rd/sunsets/trails_like_rails_but_with Cheers, Knut |

Hi all, (apologies for any cross-posting) (to INF5750 students) We have now put up a howto page on the wiki that explains the first parts of assignment1, as far as we got in class today. The howto (called "a guided tour") and further info about assignment1 can be found here: http://www.hisp.info/confluence/display/HISP/Assignment+1 (to global dhis-2 list) As part of the course on Java open source development in Oslo we have written a get started tutorial for those of you interested in these tools related to dhis-2 development. Have a look at these links to get started: http://www.hisp.info/confluence/display/HISP/Assignment+1 http://www.hisp.info/confluence/display/HISP/Guided+tour+of+Assignment1 http://www.hisp.info/confluence/display/DHIS2/Getting+Started http://www.hisp.info/confluence/display/DHIS2/Home Any questions can be posted on the list, e-mailed to ol...@if... or try...@if... or posted on the wiki as a e.g. comment to the relevant page. -- regards, Ola Hodne Titlestad HISP University of Oslo --------------------- |

Hi all, After some testing we now would like to announce the new wiki for HISP and the DHIS-2 project: www.hisp.info/confluence/ It's a confluence wiki that enables all of you to participate in keeping the content updated and interesting. The wiki has three main sections (spaces in correct confluence terminology): HISP - a section for general information concerning HISP, such as local HISP teams, communication channels, research, teaching, and an intro to the projects. DHIS-1 - a section devoted to the DHIS 1.X series, the MS platform-based versions. All relevant information as well as a (possible) software download page concerning DHIS 1.3 and DHIS 1.4 is found here. DHIS-2 - a space for the DHIS 2.0 project. Design, ongoing systems development, resources, developer guides and tutorials, and introductions to tools and frameworks ++ are all located here. I recommend that all of you sign up and get a user account so that you can start to edit and write yourselves. Follow the instructions on the main page to sign-up. -- regards, Ola Hodne Titlestad HISP University of Oslo --------------------- |

Hi, I noted the limitation that "generating pivot tables is not supported". BUT REMEMBER THAT WE ALREADY HAVE A VB APPLICATION THAT DOES EXACTLY THAT (see the file Pvt2L.exe in DHIS version 1.3.0.7x) I see two possibilities here: 1. Somebody with both Java and VB skills ports our Pivot Table Generator app VB code to Java and inserts it into this Java API. I don't know if that CAN be done, but it would be nice to contribute towards the global FOSS community in that regard. 2. Another possibility would be to somehow encapsulate the VB app and call it from the Java API. The first option would be best, and we could at the same time make a few improvements to the Pivot Table Generator (I've got a small list). The logical person to do this would of course be Greg Rudman from Soft craft, the original designer of the VB app & a good Java developer. Problem is that he works commercially and we cannot prioritise funding for this now, so for now we need to find some student(s) or equivalent who's willing to do this for free. I'd just finished reading through this discussion and thought I would post the link to this list when this message from Knut came through. There is some good content in this discussion thread (along with the usual noise of Slashdot). I found this comment particularly interesting: ---- from Slashdot---- > if your application needs to be platform > independent, J2EE is the obvious choice. If you > want the easiest and most productive development > environment, stick with .NET. I'd agree with that, with the caveat that I don't have quite the same level of expertise with J2EE that I do with .NET. On the other hand, surely you're considering making some/most/all of your apps browser-based. If so, why not go with the following approach: - build back-end with J2EE or .NET (your preference; generally most places won't care which you use for back end systems, as they'll have experience supporting each these days) - expose all your functionality via Web services - build your UI stuff in XUL so it can be driven by any Mozilla-based browser Why use XUL? The following reasons: - Mozilla browsers run on just about any platform, so your client-side portability issues disappear - no client deployment. Particularly important if you face having to make customer-specific changes to your UI - powerful user interface; most of the useful UI widgets are in XUL, so you can build an interface that users will like - Firefox is taking a sizeable chunk out of IE's market on Windows, and is now getting recommendations from the sources that IT decision makers tend to respect - it's easy to code test cases that require user interaction in XUL, so a lot of your initial testing can be done while you build up XUL expertise - there's no real lock in; if your customer absolutely requires that a Mozilla browser can't be installed, the effort involved in putting together an identical user interface that works client-server (using e.g. VB.NET or Delphi) is very low once you've got a solid working GUI up and going in XUL. To be honest, that goes for just about any application; migrating your GUI from one toolset to another is very fast, *except* when you have to migrate to a regular HTML GUI such as IE Downsides of XUL - no really good IDE at present. There's a few good looking works in progress, but that's about it. An IDE along the lines of VS.NET or Delphi for XUL would be a huge step forward at this point - documentation exists and is quite comprehensive, but high quality tutorial-level stuff in particular can be tough to find. Plenty of good reference material though; either online or in books ---------end of Slashdot comment --------- /Mark Knut Staring wrote: > Hello everybody, > > There's a fairly extensive discussion on technologies for health care > systems on Slashdot today (mainly on .Net vs. Java). > > Being an open discussion forum for geeks, there's quite a lot of > noise, and it seems somewhat US-centric. > > Still, I found several of the subdiscussions to be of interest. > You can find a somewhat noise-filtered version here: > http://ask.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=133829&threshold=2&mode=thread&commentsort=0&op=Change > > The whole discussion can be found here: > http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/12/23/2144208&tid=156 > > God Jul (Merry Yuletide) to all! > > Knut > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide > Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. > Discover which products truly live up to the hype. Hi, Knut... The discussion is very interesting. Besides the cons you mentioned, the discussion is also biased towards hospital IS, which demand a critical amount of security. Anyway, it is wonderful to find out that many out there think of J2EE as a suitable development platform and, best of, I liked this (quote): "Closed source code for medical applications is like selling drinking water in a life boat. It's wrong." Merry Xmas! Humberto. Hi, Funny, isn't it - I read that article and it's like greek, peppered with acronyms and technologies (AOP, JDO, AJUG, Struts, MVC, JMS, JTA, Resin, etc etc) I don't know anything about. Even the effort at "explaining" Dependency Injection is a joke - it just states that "this is tricky but you might be able to pick it up". And there is nobody else here working with HISP - possibly excluding Greg Rudman at Soft Craft, but his time cost us nearly 4,000 per day now - that have a clue either. Most of us here have a background in more mainstream development environments (read: VB/VBA/ASP/.NET/C# etc). So we need to do something fast to bridge this knowledge gap, otherwise I fear the DHIS 2 will be mainly Oslo-driven (read: highly alienating for the rest of us) with a few satellite developers. Practically all information I've seen about these technologies so far are similarly excluding, filled with jargon and assuming that people already know all the basic technologies already. Therefore: are there anybody in Oslo who understand BOTH mainstream (MS) development environments AND these Java Technologies, and thus could collate a collection of "DHIS 2 for dummies" articles with some commentary that could start to bridge this gap? Please remember that it must be an easy read but also not too voluminous - most of us have full-time jobs or more and cannot spend weeks reading thousands of pages. I have had a look at Squirrel SQL. It is a graphical tool to view the contents of databases. It uses JDBC to connect to the databases, so it can connect to any DBMS that have a JDBC driver (which all DBMS I know of have). It is licensed under GNU GPL. Hi,
Good work, guys! I had started to suspect that there was some fundamental=
=20
problem, but I'm a bit surprised to hear that VBA don't support Unicode,=20
since I've used the Unicode option in China (simplified Chinese) and it=20
worked OK - the dialog control would display chinese characters and the d=
ata=20
would export OK.
In any case, the lack of any significant info about Vietnamese in the MS=20
Knowledge Base indicates that MS has not done a lot of work on that side.=
My=20
gut feeling is that using that VNI 8-bits codepage seems to be the best=20
option, in particular if the majority of PCs are running Windows 98 (whic=
h=20
does not directly support unicode in any case).
Keep me posted on progress. If you re-design some of the DHIS objects,=20
please try to do so in a way that does not disrupt how it works in other=20
locales.
If you take a look at the VBA module "modLanguage", you will see there's =
a=20
language constant called "LAN_VIETNAMESE". So you can use IF testing to=20
place forks in the code where necessary, like this:
If PrimaryLanguage(DefaultLanguage) =3D LANG_VIETNAMESE Then
<your forked code>
else
<current code>
End If
Best regards
calle

Subject: RE: Unicode problem - need assistance Follow-up
Dear all,
We can't export to text file using Unicode because when Save dialog showi=
ng=20
it doesn't allow us choose unicode type (utf-8). The language used in DHI=
S=20
1.3 is VBA 6. This version of VBA doesn't support Unicode characters. You=
=20
can see in the module basComDialogs:
---
Private Declare Function GetSaveFileName Lib "comdlg32.dll" Alias=20
"GetSaveFileNameA" (pOpenfilename As OPENFILENAME) As Long
---
The problem here I think is that API functions which go with VBA 6 don't=20
support Unicode. There are 2 solutions for this problem.
1. Using ANSI character instead of Unicode (We use VNI character code for=
=20
Vietnamese. This character code is only 8 bits).
2. Finding a comdlg32.dll or GetSaveFileName API function which support=20
Unicode.
Added comment by Ola: During implementation here in Vietnam our demand fo=
r=20
Wi2k/XP to have unicode support has made it difficult for us, as most=20
computers still run win98. If we go for solution 1 above, using the 8 bit=
=20
VNI code (same support for Vietnamese characters as unicode) it will be=20
easier to implement here. Then of course there is no Vietnamese in Region=
al=20
Settings, so we must do some tricks in order for the system to pull the=20
right strings from HISPML.mdb. We can of course use any other language (e=
.g=20
Swedish) as alias for the Vietnamese strings in Windows settings and HISP=
ML.=20
Thanh tells me that VNI code is what they use down here.
Regards,
Ola and Thanh

Ola,
I have posted a question about these issues to one of the Microsoft Acces=
s
news groups, but (as I expected) there's no reply - I guess to the proble=
m
is just too "special" for such newsgroups.
If those sites referenced by Google do not provide further clues, I would
try to contact Microsoft Vietnam, or the local company representing MS in
Vietnam. Again, I'm sure others must have had the same problem and that
there is a solution to it.
I've checked a few other things, by the way:
- There are no Vietnamese version of MDAC
- There are some Vietnamese related downloadable files on the MS web site=
,
but the description is in Vietnamese (which I don't understand) and the f=
ew
English words used indicate that the downloads relates to Word/Excel/Outl=
ook
and not Access.
- with regard to web pages, I don't seem to have any problems displaying
Vietnamese characters using Unicode UTF-8 and Windows 1258 code page
- In Word 2003, I noted that Vietnamese (see Format menu, Font, Font Tab)
now is using "Latin Text Font" and not "Complex Scripts"
Also note that:
- I can replace B? Y t? with B=E1=BB=99 Y t=E1=BA=BF in the "File Name=
" text box in the
Common Dialog Control that opens up to save the export file, AND it will
actually process that "vietnamese" file name correctly. For instance, I h=
ad
also renamed a previous export file using the same replacement method, an=
d
the Common Dialog Control would correctly ask "A file by that name alread=
y
exist, do you want to overwrite it?".
BUT when I step through the code, I found that the Common Dialog Control
(via a Public Function called "DialogFile" and some other wrappers that y=
ou
can find in the basComDialogs module) actually returns B? Y t? to the str=
ing
variable strDataFile used in the DHIS code even when I have manually
replaced those question marks with the Vietnamese characters.
My conclusion is that there is some fundamental "piece" missing in our
puzzle, since it obviously also affect the Windows Common controls
(MSCOMCTL.ocx and COMDLG32.dll)
I don't have more time to investigate this now, and it is difficult for m=
e
since some of the available materials (as you can expect) is in Vietnames=
e.
Regards
calle
