Robert M was overheared mumbling something about this on Wed, 21 Jun 2000 19:09:25 -0500 > Is it possible to install cscmail on a ppc linux distribution. I downloaded > the tar.gz source but had no luck. what can I do? > thanks, Robert I suspect that it would work, but I can not say for sure... I have a co-worker who runs linuxPPC on his Mac, I will see if I can convince him to install CSCMail on that machine... Until then, the following info MAY help (I know next to nothing about PPC): CSCMail is a perl script, depending on Perl 5.005 or better... It also requires quite a few perl modules ... and Gtk The easiest way to install it is to download CSCMailInstaller.pl and run that. It will download all the modules and install them for you. Assuming all the modules install cleanly under LinuxPPC, you should have no problem getting CSCMail to run... Let me know how it turns out... -CZ -- -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.1 GIT/CM d--(+) s+: a- C++++ UL++++$ P+++ L+++>++++ E--- W+++(--) N+ o? K? w---(++) O M->-- !V PS+++ PE Y+ PGP t+@ 5? Normally I would. Sorry about the other errors not having been included, but a restart took care of them. As for the nasty spam, there was no error. I just clicked either of the two & cscmail just disappeared. > > Just out of curiosity, is that a function of the > > database which lists the messages in such an > > unfriendly manner, or did you do that for some > > reason? I wouldn't use in in Windows & had switched to pine for mail till pine started having a problem no one can figure out. I'd recently started using KFM for graphical Web browsing (w3m for most browsing) & haven't had much trouble. I particularly like that I've not crashed it;-). > while in CSCMail 2.0.0 the index for a 30 meg MBOX > only takes up 700k (2%) Too cool. Again, when will we see it? > Anyway, I hope I answered your questions... Yes. Thank you. While I've not been ~entirely~ pleased with some things in 1.6.1 (like the database issue & that I can't move things to a folder beyond the heitht of my screen), I've been overjoyed to finally find a graphical mailer which actually does what cscmail does (not half of the features I ~can~ use are in others). Even the annoying NSCommunicator lists them by > folder & makes them one big file by that folder name. If you'd made > this setup, wouldn't it have been easier to do it as either NSC or > pine? Basically, we did it for speed reasons... First, we used to embed the messages directly in the database, but that had portability issues, so we moved the mail out to sub folders. Initally we mixed all the mail in one big folder, but it was still individual files per message, then someone told me (falsly I might add) that there was a limit to the number of files in a folder, so I devised the numbered subfolder scheme. The reason, however that messages are all in seperate files is that: 1: no file access is needed to move a message from one folder to another, just an update to the index (ie: we use vFolders, have since version 1, and so Evolution is NOT origional in this claim... dispite their loud assertions to the contrary) 2: it is much faster when viewing a message to just load and deal with a single file that is the whole message. Having to seek through a 20 meg file to find the one message you wish to view is a bit cumbersome. 3: I was not a very skilled programmer when I started CSCMail, and it seemed a good idea at the time. You should know that Version 2.0.0 of CSCMail uses an MBOX format message store (similar to Netscape and Pine) with the addition of an index file and this seems to overcome the points 1 and 2 problems fairly well. This "indexed MBOX" format is not "unique." In fact, Netscape has always done something like this. I modeled my format closely after a document discussing such things by the author of versions 2 and 3 of Netscape Mail. Netscape 4 has bloated the index to such an extreme that it is no longer the same beast, and in fact, the index is often as much as 50% of the size of the MBOX file, while in CSCMail 2.0.0 the index for a 30 meg MBOX only takes up 700k (2%) Anyway, I hope I answered your questions... -CZ -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Kordik st...@vo... CZ, It finally dawned on me to move the stuff in the Inbox I want to keep to another floder & use the Empty Selected Folder feature to get rid of these spams. Bit of a drag, but a hell of a lot easier than opening every non-descript message in the cscmail subdirectories. Just out of curiosity, is that a function of the database which lists the messages in such an unfriendly manner, or did you do that for some reason? Even the annoying NSCommunicator lists them by folder & makes them one big file by that folder name. If you'd made this setup, wouldn't it have been easier to do it as either NSC or pine? Morning CZ, Last night, two pieces of spam came in with some format problem - cscmail crashes & closes when I click on them to delete them. Hey CZ, Speaking of bugs.... I'm wondering if this is known: Since this morning, I'd been getting a lot of cscget.running & cscsend.running errors. It took numerous deletions of those files which weren't automatically deleting when done & two restarts to clear it (I hope). Also, in the midst of that stuff above, I'd received a message from the list - at least that's what the header told me. The only thing in the message list was the date it was sent. There was no, sender, no subjet & no body. Hope that one wasn't important. Oh, don't know if you'd responded to either the message ending with the Gibson/Neuromancer quistion, I still don't have anything in response - assuming you ~had~ responded;-). CSCMail 1.8.0 is very close to being released and we are asking users to run it and test it and catch as many bugs as they can. 2) If you are compiling a list of bugs, wouldn't it be ideal for you to send this list to us BEFORE we publish a "major upgrade" ? This would allow us to incorporate said bug fixes into this major upgrade. 3) Are you running CSCMail 1.6.1 ? If so, compiling a list of bugs in it is a bit late, since we are about to release 1.8.0 (which by its nature includes a ton of bug fixes from 1.6.1) Please send them along anyway, incase you have found some that we may have missed. But don't be surprised if the bugs you are finding in 1.6.1 haven't allready been found and fixed in 1.7.x (the current developmental version, which is in feature freeze and final bug testing right now, as mentioned in the CSCMail FAQ) -CZ -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Kordik st...@vo... Hey CZ (or anyone else), If you'd responded to me yesterday, will you resend? I'd had a problem with one of my accounts not deleting what's on the server (that one's a Yahoo mail account, so I'm not surprised). In trying to find out which server it was coming from, I'd found in a telnet session that there was a response on another server, but the following download didn't put it anywhere I can find it in my folders. The installer will not download anything it finds in the /root/cscmailbuild dir so it does not hurt to run it and give your fetching util the right args .. it will not redownload anything that is there :) Maher On Sat, 17 Jun 2000 19:58:08 +0200, Daniel Tröder said: > Aah... > Is this only a hint-for-the-next-time, or shoud I try install again if all > this > is where it should be?: > >> > Akira:~ # ls -l /root/cscmailbuild/ > total 1980 > drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 4096 Jun 16 17:01 . > drwx--x--x 29 root root 4096 Jun 16 17:22 .. > drwxr-xr-x 5 gast 500 4096 Jun 16 16:45 DBD-CSV-0.1022 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 41879 Jun 16 16:31 DBD-CSV-0.1022.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 5 300 wheel 4096 Jun 16 16:44 DBI-1.13 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 168389 Jun 16 16:29 DBI-1.13.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 4 2624 68 4096 Jun 16 16:44 DateManip-5.37 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 114053 Jun 16 16:28 DateManip-5.37.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 7 gast 500 4096 Jun 16 16:54 HTML-Parser-3.07 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 56076 Jun 16 16:32 > HTML-Parser-3.07.tar.gz > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 31587 Jun 16 16:43 IO-1.20.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 7 gast 500 4096 Jun 16 16:45 IO-stringy-1.210 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 40469 Jun 16 16:38 > IO-stringy-1.210.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 4 1027 1002 4096 Jun 16 16:45 Lingua-Ispell-0.07 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8806 Jun 16 16:43 > Lingua-Ispell-0.07.tar.gzdr > wxr-xr-x 4 gast 500 4096 Jun 16 16:45 MIME-Base64-2.11 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10682 Jun 16 16:31 > MIME-Base64-2.11.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 3 6236 1324 4096 Jun 16 16:45 MIME-Types-0.02 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3526 Jun 16 16:42 > MIME-Types-0.02.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 9 gast 500 4096 Jun 16 17:06 MIME-tools-4.124 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 267364 Jun 16 16:42 > MIME-tools-4.124.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 6 1002 1001 4096 Jun 16 16:57 MailTools-1.1401 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 39678 Jun 16 16:42 > MailTools-1.1401.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 6 gast 500 4096 Jun 16 16:44 SQL-Statement-0.1016 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 85700 Jun 16 16:30 > SQL-Statement-0.1016.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 4 gast 500 4096 Jun 16 16:44 Text-CSV_XS-0.20 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 15687 Jun 16 16:30 > Text-CSV_XS-0.20.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 5 gast 500 4096 Jun 16 16:45 URI-1.05 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 78502 Jun 16 16:43 URI-1.05.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 6 gast 500 4096 May 13 07:33 cscmail-1.6.1 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 219636 Jun 4 08:52 cscmail-1.6.1.tar.gz > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 246830 Jun 4 08:53 > cscmail-nomodules-1.6.1-1.i386.rpm > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 392120 Jun 16 16:26 gnome-perl.tar.gz > drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Jun 16 17:03 libnet-1.0703 > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 64719 Jun 16 17:01 libnet-1.0703.tar.gz > << > > ??? > > (I tryed both, the cscmail.tar.gz and cscmail.rpm -method.) > > Daniel > > > > Am Sam, 17 Jun 2000 schrieben Sie: > > no, it doesn't use fixed paths... Hey CZ, > > > You are using 1.6.1 right? > > Yes. OK. If I did this correctly, I guess I'm updated as things, generally, seem a bit faster. Was that simply to enter cvs > Be sure to read through the changelog. Uh...changelog...? > Or you can just wait for the official release of 1.8.0 > which should be soon. Cool I'll upgrade as well. > As a side note, are you using the spellchecking features > of > CSCMail? because I notice in your posts a lot of > "substitutions" for words that wouldn't be in the > dictionary of the spellchecker. (For example, > turning CSV to CST and Postgres to Postures) Uh. While I ~had~ been using it, I found it a little annoyiing. It's off now. Interesting, I hadn't substituted either of those. Guess I'll skip the spellchecker till after the next release -- if you're doing anythng with the spellchecker, that is. > You may want to look into that, it makes reading your e- >mail a bit of an adventure. Heh. I'll bet, but as I'd done nothing more than click the "Next" button on those words in the spellchecker, it may not be something I can fix. > Let me know if it seems to be some sort of bug in the > spellchecking code... There ya go. I wouldn't know where to begin, but I know that ispell never did ~anything~ like that. What's that based on? Besides, ispell allows for various options that this one doesn't -- like "Ignore all". Anyway, something else I've found in the Move feature. I'm on lots of lists & am rather anal about getting mail to specific folders. Here, since you've wonderfully included nesting, I've created LOTS of folders. But if something winds up in the wrong folder because the filter found something that wouldn't get it moved or if there is no filter, Next fills the screen vertically, but won't either move down to other folders listed or further down or produce a "More" like nest as in something like NS's bookmarks that go further than the screen. I'd found that using the arrow key will move the highlight, but that the highlight disappears at the bottom of the screen for the the time it takes to cycle to the top of the folder list & reappears there. Did I just not set something, or is that something you'll have to include in the next release or bug fix? Oh, just wondering with the Gibson connection: Any chance you might do something along the lines of the Neuromancer theme for the icons, or something...? Meph -- "I did this 'cause Linux gives me a woody." -Dave '-ddt->' Taylor, announcing DOOM for Linux l login & press Enter? That took all of about a second. Sure, I've a fast box with an adsl connection, but I find nothing new when I do a locate cvs. Maybe that's not the way;-). -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/csc mai |

no, it doesn't use fixed paths... You need to pass wget the args for passive or I know the one for ncftpget CSCMailInstaller.pl "ncftpget -f" between the quotes place the options for wget or whatever program to recognize your firewall etc..
