Lane Lester was overheared mumbling something about this on 06 Jun 2000 07:04:14 EDT > I hope it won't be too long until the dust settles and we can see where > these > two programs stand. Pronto! and CSCMail have diverged. I have fixed quite a few bugs in CSCMail 1.7.x and the fixes are available on sourceforge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/cscmail (Checkout the CVS section, module cscmail-1.7.x) Pronto! has incorporated some of my bug fixes, but has also added features, and possibly fixed other bugs/introduced new ones. The development of CSCMail 1.7.x and Pronto! has diverged. I have made it a point to hop into Pronto! and inform the developers of any major bugs I have fixed in CSCMail 1.7.x because I am a nice guy. CSCMail 1.7.x is in feature freeze, and once all bugs seem to be stamped out in it, I will release CSCMail 1.8.0... This will be the LAST CSCMail release in Perl. > Since I was going to try the C version, I renamed my .cscmail directory to > ..cscmailold to get it out of the way. I thought that .pronto had taken over > its role. Wrong! After fetching the mail, nothing showed up in the message > list. When I gave .cscmail its old name back, I =think= I got all my > messages > back. CSCMail 1.9.x uses a .cscmailcrc file and doesn't put anything .cscmail at this time. Even when it does begin to create its own mail folders, I will make sure that the filenames and so forth do NOT conflict with the perl versions of CSCMail. I am designing these programs to run side by side, especially since 1.9.x is not a viable e-mail client at this time. No changes to your 1.7.x setup are required/desired to test out the 1.9.x version. > After fetching from CVS, I first noticed that INSTALL was empty. But the process bombed > with: > checking for gnome-print >= 0.13... not found > configure: error: gnome-print 0.13 or later is required to compile CSCMail. gnome-print requires gnome-xml. GtkHTML requires gnome-print and gdk-pixbuf These four modules (gnome-xml, gnome-print, gdk-pixbuf, gtkhtml) are all available from the helixcode website as tar.gz's http://www.helixcode.com/apps/evolution-preview/index.php3 > That turned out to not be a simple download and install, so I've decided to > wait for the new Helix-Gnome CD's to get here to try again. No Lane, you weren't the only one to see cscsend.running stuck in your machine. I also ran into a problem where one of my three accounts couldn't send any mail...although another account with the same service, sent and received just fine. For now, I'm waiting for cscmail to come out, so I can return to the mbox format instead of the embedded database/file system. All in all, the original Perl version is a decent program...there are minor things which became nuisances -- upgrading was a chore. So, for now, I'm back to using Spruce, with the little idiosyncracies it has, until one or the other becomes the stable email client of choice. `// -- hugh d fegely wo...@po... http://wolffe.dyndns.org/ Howling|At|The|Moon ------------------------------------------------ This is Linux country... ..on a quiet night, you can hear Windows crash. |

CSCmail-perl is no more.Count will continue to support its users but the focus is on C. Pronto! WAS the cscmail Perl project. Pronto! will have a db backend. CSCMail will have an indexed mbox. I hope it won't be too long until the dust settles and we can see where these two programs stand. Since I was going to try the C version, I renamed my .cscmail directory to .cscmailold to get it out of the way. I thought that .pronto had taken over its role. Wrong! After fetching the mail, nothing showed up in the message list. When I gave .cscmail its old name back, I =think= I got all my messages back. After fetching from CVS, I first noticed that INSTALL was empty. Then configure wouldn't run, and I decided I should read changelog. I finally found the message about autogen.sh and got started. But the process bombed with: checking for gnome-print >= 0.13... not found configure: error: gnome-print 0.13 or later is required to compile CSCMail. That turned out to not be a simple download and install, so I've decided to wait for the new Helix-Gnome CD's to get here to try again. -- Lane ____ Lane Lester / Madison County, Georgia USA ---- Using Linux to get where I want to go... |

Steve, you may want to do like what I did with Pronto!, on dialogs that require the user to choose a directory, $fs->file_selection->set_sensitive(0); that gives the user a hint they are supposed to choose a dir. No, I was banned from the cs...@cs... list for a short while, and missed any mails sent to that address since June 2nd I have not recieved. I am setting up the new lists to be a bit more robust... For one thing they are at sourceforge, and so list movement should stop, second, I am setting up aliases for mail sent to cs...@cs... and csc...@cs... so that even those messages should make it to the new list... which is at csc...@li... (btw: all the subscribers of cs...@cs... have been auto-subscribed to the csc...@li... list, and the old list has been desolved.) Oh, and a few bugs in CSCMail 1.7.x have been fixed by me recently, including the segfault in cscget when an invalid filter was encountered... be sure to use cvs to checkout the cscmail-1.7.x module from cvs.cscmail.sourceforge.net Instructions are available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/cscmail The Pronto! folks have been notified of the issues I have fixed in CSCMail 1.7.x, and can check the cvs logs at sourceforge, to see what they need to do to fix these same bugs in Pronto! I must admit however, that I will not be able to continue to make sure that the Pronto! team is aware of all the issues I fix in CSCMail 1.7.x as I do not have time to keep up with both CSCMail and Pronto! hehe I would advise them to keep a CLOSE eye on the cvs logs for CSCMail 1.7.x though, as nearly all of the code added to CSCMail 1.6.x (to turn it into 1.7.x) has bugs. Anyway, the above was not a slam at the Pronto! developers... just that as I look at the 1.7.x code, I see quite a few bugs... I will be fixing them as I have the time, and the Pronto! team would be well advised to track my fixes, since these bugs are (of course) forming the foundation of Pronto! itself. -CZ |
