Hi everybody, I would like to use this email-client, but it's kind of difficult to get it run..... (0.: I read the FAQ :) 1. The "CSCMailInstaller.pl" doesn't work - I had to DL all packages manually and place them in /root/cscmailbuild to get it to work... 2. Well everything seemed going well, but when I tryed to run it: daniel@Akira:~ > cscmail Can't locate object method "new" via package "MIME::Parser" at /usr/bin/cscmail line 63. "MIME::Parser" is "MIME-tools-4.124.tar.gz" says "CSCMailInstaller.pl", and this compiled and tested and installed well (I tried manually) ?!? If someone knows what's the problem, please drop me a line. Thanks Daniel |

Isn't that the most recent release? That is the most recent "release" but there have been some bug's fixed and are in the CVS version only (1.7.x) If you go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/cscmail you will find instructions on how to retrieve the CVS version. Be sure to read through the changelog. Or you can just wait for the official release of 1.8.0 which should be soon. As a side note, are you using the spellchecking features of CSCMail? because I notice in your posts a lot of "substitutions" for words that wouldn't be in the dictionary of the spellchecker. Ah, "play". You know, I've been using Unix for a long time & Linux for quite a while & never knew. Cool that that actually works without turning on the other annoying noises. I'd have settled for a beep, but to have an actual sound! ;-). > > 2. I'm telling' ya -- people just don't get 'puters. They have the ability to use a telling colours, & they make white backgrounds. There really isn't a fix for this at this time. Grumble, grumble. Sigh, I'll deal. > > 4. What's this CST Database? > CST == Comma Separated Values and it is a "fake database" Oh, is that all. Well, commas have always worked where others don't always. Though I don't really see why you add the option. Maybe a search for the best option & Separated just uses it, or an easy way to change it should anyone really want to. Dunno -- you know better than I;-). > If you run RedHat, Postures comes with it, so its an easy > install. I believe it ~is~ installed, but I know little of databases. Sure, I've done data entry in numerous databases, but to know why one would be better than another is more for such as you & my girl friend. In time I'll start coding (I will probably have little choice but to write my own POS, as I can't find any free ones except the one for pizza shops -- my business may be retail, but it's a bit more complicated than pizza!;-). > > Issues: > > 4. That was the first thing I tried, & it took care of most of this problem. I think it's working now, but there was a period after setting that feature where I still had messages not deleting. Worse, when I > try to open them (or attachments) in Netscape, nothing happens > when I click the button to execute. What's the deal there? You are using the ancient XmHTML widget. CSCMail uses it by default, because it is commonly installed on most systems. I highly recommend you switch to the more modern, fully featured GtkHTML widget. It is available from GNOME's servers. Also the folks at HelixCode have packaged it up on their site too, since Evolution also requires it... As a side note, we allow HTML mail to specify it's own colors, so if the person sending you mail chooses a white background, thats what it will have... You could take a look at sub view_message() in cscmail and prolly figure out how to search for and remove any background color tags from HTML mail... In a future version, I will make the option to force a user color scheme. > 3. I also can't figure out how to move the focus from the list > of messages to the body of the highlighted message that I can > scroll down the message with, say, the down arrow key. CSV == Comma Seperated Values and it is a "fake database" It's just a set of comma delemeted text files. To be honest, we include support for this mearly as a convinience and HIGHLY recommend all users switch to a "real" database as soon as they are comfortable doing so. I personally use PostgreSQL, and other use mySQL, and CSCMail is well tested with both platforms. If you run RedHat, Postgres comes with it, so its an easy install. > Issues: > 4. You are using 1.6.1 right? There where some bugs in the import code in 1.6.1. I recommend using CVS to checkout 1.7.x from the CVS server. Soon I will be packaging this up to a 1.8.0 release, as it is quite stable. > 6. I'm glad that I can import from (most) any e-mailer, but is > it normal for that to be so slow? Hey CZ, What's up? I finally got things working, but.... > Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help... I'd like to take you up on this. I've some questions & some issues: Questions: 1. When I'd first installed, one of the settings in a pop-up window (I suppose only for root) was to play a system beep when new mail arrives. I can't find any such setting in my user settings, & I've no idea what command to enter to play something like a wav file. I turn esd off because of all the annoying noises RedHat thinks are appropriate, & because RealPlayer won't work with esd on. Know any way to set that up under these circumstances? 2. I'm very confused about the few html e-mails I get. They show up in-line, but are not only with a white background, but have X'd out items all over them & nothing else. Worse, when I try to open them (or attachments) in Netscape, nothing happens when I click the button to execute. What's the deal there? 3. I also can't figure out how to move the focus from the list of messages to the body of the highlighted message that I can scroll down the message with, say, the down arrow key. Am I missing something? 4. What's this CST Database? On installing, the message had said that no user name or password had to be entered, so I didn't enter any. Should I have, or should I set that up (if so, how now it's all installed)? Issues: 4. For some reason not all messages on the server are getting deleted when the mailer is finished downloading. I've had to telnet into the server of the default account more than once to delete the messages in pine. 5. While I really like the Import Into Folder feature, I'd found that when I'd imported my local pin's in box into the In box folder some messages got the header of another message & the message which actually belonged to that header was gone. 6. I'm glad that I can import from (most) any e-mailer, but is it normal for that to be so slow? I've a P-III 500, 128MB RAM & free space, so I imagine it must be the importer itself. In box. Yes, CSCMail 1.9.x requires the GtkHTML widget. No its not ready for serious use (although I am hacking away at it as fast as I can.) I'll do so. But I'm in the midst of something you may want to add -- or put some warning. As I'd mentioned earlier, I've been using kmail mostly. I'd started the import mail round 6.00am & wondered why it was taking so long (it hadn't finished -- I killed it about 30 minutes ago). It finally occured to me that kmail doesn't delete any message it receives, it simply hides it. Now, looking at a little over half of the messages from kmal, I find over 3500 I get to delete from cscmail. Rule: Never, ever import mail from kmail folders. Once I get the stuff kmail was supposed to have deleted out of cscmail, I'll get it set up. Oh, the colour trouble. I couldn't find the file you'd referred to (not even the path, or rather the end of it) in the other e-mail. I'd copied the cscmailrc from root & edited it, I'd copied it into my user's .cscmail as gtkrc & back to csmailrc, opening cscmail & closing each time but nothing changed. I'd even fooled with the colour settings. I'd finally changed from the Terminal theme to Wireframe. While I kind of preferred all the bright green of Terminal, I can deal with the purple of Wireframe since I can now see the fonts as white on a black background in the Compose Message window (the received mail does though, show up as the colours I'd set in cscmail settings). Thanks CZ. I'll be up & running eventually. Meph |

I must make a FAQ... Basically, you must have both the GtkXmHTML libraries, AND the headers installed for CSCMailInstaller.pl to succesfully compile the Gtk::XmHTML perl module. These libraries and headers are in TWO packages (if you use RPM or Debian...) The Libraries are in: gnome-libs and the headers are in gnome-libs-devel (Using the RPM naming scheme.. I know they are split similarly in Deb but I do not know the naming conventions for Debian.) BOTH must be installed for the XmHTML perl module to compile... the files to check for are: $prefix/include/gtk-xmhtml/gtk-xmhtml.h $prefix/lib/libgtkxmhtml.so $prefix/lib/libgtkxmhtml.so.1 $prefix/lib/libgtkxmhtml.so.1.0.1 Once you have these files, re-run CSCMailInstaller.pl and it should successfully compile the Gtk::XmHTML module. (or you can cd ~/cscmailbuild/gnome-perl/GtkXmHTML and do perl Makefile.PL; make; make install as root) -CZ -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Kordik st...@vo... Hi folks, I've searched a long time for a good email client so I tried cscmail. If I run the installer it downloads all the necessary files and installs them but when I try to start cscmail there's only an error message: Use of uninitialized value at /usr/local/bin/cscmail line 55. Can't locate object method "init" via package "Gtk::XmHTML" at /usr/local/bin/cscmail line 55. Can anyone help me, please? Greetings, Simon |

I'm using Pronto as my client of choice, but I'd like to try CSCMail (C version, if that needs to be specified). Is all the conversation about 1.6 (Perl), or is 1.9 (C) ready for serious use? Does it still require a successful install of GtkHTML, something that continues to elude me? -- Lane ____ Lane Lester / Madison County, Georgia USA Using Linux to get where I want to go... |

Also, try running "cscsend" from the > command line, > and report any errors please... Ok ... I erase all 'outbox' mail and try to write another one. This time, the mail went out but twice (I've got two messages in 'sent items'). While sending I saw Sent Items 1 Outbox 1 And then Sent Items 2 And the recipient receive 2 mails. I think my problemes was that I've got an e-mail with multiple recipient: like this 'to...@se..., ti...@se...' so I remove the mail and now is ok. (Perhaps the ',' between the 2 adresses ?) I don't think to have 2x Clicked ! I've only clicked on 'send' But I retry to send another one with 'alt-S' and this time Only one went out. I retry with mouse, and this time, only one went out. Perhaps my mouse is a little too sensitive. > Is the work account an account you also check from some other mailer? No. Or I don't know! On my computer, cscmail was the only mailer running. When I saw, that it download a lot of mail but without marking them as new, I opened netscape to saw the new one. > CSCMail > will check the "status" field in message headers, and if it notes that > the mail > has already been downloaded with another program, it will not mark it > as new. > This feature can either be commented out, or I can put a config option > in... > Let me know which you prefer...
