You have the same issue if you move to a physical host with a different scsi
controller. Basically the disk driver for the root filesystem has to be
included in either the kernel or the initrd. You can usually boot the install
disk (even in vmware), add the driver you need to /etc/modprobe.conf and rebuild
the initrd. Or a simple-minded approach is to do an install on the same or
similar hardware, save the contents of /boot, then copy that back over the
clonezilla load. That should give you the drivers the installer picks without
having to know the modules you need yourself.

For the record : the problem was that the default disk emulation of vmware (at least Fusion, mac) is SCSI, while the originating machine was an IDE one. Looks like centos wasn't equipped with the necessary drivers to handle the SCSI interface. Solution 1 : change the interface type to IDE and restore again Solution 2 : add the drivers needed (not tried) Thanks for the help Steven ! Matthieu Début du message réexpédié : De : Steven Shiau <[1]st...@nc...> Date : 1 juillet 2009 10:01:12 GMT+02:00 À : Matthieu Gaillet <[2]mat...@ga...> Objet : Rép : [Clonezilla-live] Restoring a CentOS disk to VmWare : help needed Yes, vmlinuz will be loaded, then when initrd.img is loaded, and when it tries to find the root partition, it can not find, since SCSI driver is not found in initrd.img, so it won't be able to mount the root partition on SCSI disk. Therefore it shows you kernel panic. Steven. Matthieu Gaillet wrote: Would it boot anyway until the Kernel panic ? Even without those drivers ? I didn't saw any other error messages, but it is possible that I missed one of them... Is there a log of the activities written somewhere on the ramdisk ? Regarding the image dir : it is stored on an external hardrive that I access through Samba at restore time. No, I do not think so. For Intel-based Mac OS, You will have some unallocated space if you use Clonezilla to clone that. Maybe this will be improved if we can find how to create the MAC OS partitions on GNU/Linux. If you know that, please share that. Thanks. Steven. DRBL live has been in the beta status for a long time. Recently we have some improvements so now it's about the time we can move it to stable branch. Please help us to test it before it becomes stable. DRBL live is a live system based on Debian Lenny. The same tech used to created Clonezilla live or GParted live is used to create DRBL live. Moreover, DRBL live includes: 1. DRBL server, the diskless server, 2. Clonezilla SE, the massive deployment server, 3. Clonezilla live, the disk or partition image or clone tool 4. GParted, the GNOME partition editor for creating, reorganizing, and deleting disk partitions. 5. More programs, e.g. disk or partition rescue programs, web browser, picture viewer... Now DRBL supports Chinese, English, French, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. You can download it on http://drbl.sourceforge.net (now the version available is 1.0.0-2) and use the same methods listed on http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/#make to create your bootable DRBL live media. Any comments and suggestions are welcome. Hi,
I'm trying to restore a physical installation of Centos to a VMWare
virtual machine.
I received the dreaded "Running: grub-install-no-floppy-root-
directory=/tmp/hd_img.QiFQFv /dev/sda
grub-probe: error: Cannot open '/boot/grub/devise_map'
/usr/sbin/grub-install: line 374: [: =: unary operator expected" error
message.
Anyhow, when I try to boot the machine, I received a Kernel Panic :
Volume group "VolGroup00" not found
Trying to resume form /dev/VolGroup/LogVol01
Unable to access resume device
(...)
Mount : Could not find filesystem '/dev/root'
(...)
Kernel Panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init!
here is a screen capture of the console :
The disk is formatted with a boot Linux partition, followed by a big

And by the way, these are very inexpensive and handy devices to have if
you are the sort of person that juggles hardware around. Some of them
are just cables that will connect to any full or laptop sized IDE or
SATA drive and you can even get VMware guests (and probably virtualbox)
to connect to them if you need to access a format you can't read
natively. (And to have some relevance here, they are obviously handy for
clonezilla too).

I have successfully done what you describe on more than one occasion. It should be OK for Clonezilla live CD version. It's recommended to plug USB disks before Cloneizlla live enter main menu. When you do not see it, please: 1. Hi, When we created Clonezilla live about 2 years ago, we named the Ubuntu-based branch as "experimental" one, yes, that was for experimental purpose then. Now it's not an appropriate name anymore. Since most of the cases this one works well. Therefore from now on we will use the name "alternative" for this branch. For more info about the differences, please check: http://drbl.sourceforge.net/faq/fine-print.php?path=./2_System/57_why_ubuntu_based_clonezilla_live.faq#57_why_ubuntu_based_clonezilla_live.faq Steven. -- Steven Shiau <steven _at_ nchc org tw> <steven _at_ stevenshiau org> National Center for High-performance Computing, Taiwan. http://www.nchc.org.tw Public Key Server PGP Key ID: 1024D/9762755A Fingerprint: A2A1 08B7 C22C 3D06 34DB F4BC 08B3 E3D7 9762 755A |

Hi, It's possible to write a script to modify this after Clonezilla restores the image for you. Clonezilla provides an option "-o1" to let you run the script in the dir /opt/drbl/share/ocs/postrun/. Excellent. 1.2.2-20 did it. I was able to make a 24GB image (no compression) in fifteen minutes. I'll need to restore it to a different machine, which I haven't done yet, but I don't anticipate any trouble restoring since I'm now able to make an image. Netboot and multicast support for Macs would be great, but unicast is certainly a step forward and will be very helpful. -- Rich On Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 2:57 AM, Steven Shiau<st...@nc...> wrote: > Richard, > An issue about HFS+ was fixed (actually it's fixed in partclone) in testing > Clonezilla live 1.2.2-20, could you please give it a try ? > Please let us know the testing results there. > > Steven. > > Richard Talley wrote: >> >> I made a live CD with clonezilla-live 1.2.2-14 and attempted to image >> the disk of an iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz with 2GB of RAM running >> OS X 10.5.6). >> >> Imaging fails on the HFS+ partition with this error: >> >> "bitmap free count err, free:75837643" >> >> I see this has been discussed on this list before. Hi, I have an FC9 server with 1 SATA disc of 160 GB and 24 GB of data. I have an exactly same server as backup server. We rsync `data` folders of the main server to the backup server. It has been decide to image the HDD of the main server to the backup server once per month to account for any OS level changes which was not rsynced. When I create an image of the main server and restore on the backup server, I will have a problem with the network values. The IP address will have to be manually changed to prevernt DUPLICATE IP in the lan. The MAC address will have to be changed to match the MAC address of the backup server's lan card. And the host name will have to be changed too. I am sure many people must have tried this and have had to change these network properties manually. Is there any short-cut to avoid manually making these changes ? I guess not, but I still thought of asking. You never know. There are 100s of smart people out there who do 100s of things the smarter was :) Do let me know your thoughts. Thx Vai |

We have 2 events in Europe recently. The 1st event is in the ISC (International Supercomputer Conference). Date: June 23-26, 2009 (exhibition) Location: Hamburg, Germany Booth number: 754 (NCHC) For more info: http://www.supercomp.de/isc09/ The developers of DRBL and Clonezilla will _NOT_ be there, but you will find some DRBL/Clonezilla stickers and "dux" dolls (http://drbl.sourceforge.net/screenshot/?in_path=/01_DRBL-Clonezilla-logo#DRBL-doll-Dux.jpg) in the NCHC booth. Therefore if you will be there, remember to go to the booth #754 and tell them you are using DRBL or Clonezilla, and you will get a "dux" doll. The 2nd event is in LSM (Libre Software Meeting) 2009. Date: July 7-11, 2009 Location: Nantes, France For more info: http://2009.rmll.info The developers of DRBL and Clonezilla will be there. A talk and a workshop about DRBL will be given during LSM 2009. http://2009.rmll.info/DRBL-The-diskless-GNU-Linux-and-MS.html?var_recherche=DRBL http://2009.rmll.info/DRBL-Workshop.html?var_recherche=DRBL Please come to join us and get the stickers and dux dolls. Could you please give testing Clonezilla live 1.2.2-19 a try ? You can download it from http://www.clonezilla.org/download/sourceforge/ It comes with newer partclone and some bugs were fixed, so maybe it helps. Please let us know your testing results. Steven.
