Here we go. This is the part of the process that wrote over the data in the disc partition: http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/doc/fine-print.php?fullmode=0&path=./01_Save_disk_image/08-select-disk-as-img-repo.doc#08-select-disk-as-img-repo.doc On the bottom of the page one can see the process, "Then Clonezilla shows you the disk usage report:" At this point I aborted the process. |

During the process it prompted where to place the target images, which I set to / on a usb partition. It then set the target dir to /home/partimage (or something similar) to / on the usb partition. I think at this point it copied its O/S into there and chrooted onto it. Afterwards, as I mentioned afore, it wrote these files onto it: -r--r--r-- 1 sloewent root 107 2009-07-20 03:38 Clonezilla-Live-Version >> -r--r--r-- 1 sloewent root 17982 2009-07-19 02:50 COPYING >> dr-xr-xr-x 2 sloewent root 2048 2009-07-20 03:38 isolinux >> dr-xr-xr-x 2 sloewent root 2048 2009-07-20 03:38 live >> dr-xr-xr-x 5 sloewent root 2048 2009-07-20 03:38 utils Perhaps, I skipped over a step. It was around 10pm I did this. I shall read the documentation again to see where I went wrong. S. |

Are you doing a disk->image copy or disk->disk? In the disk->image
case, clonezilla should not delete anything. It should just create a
new directory of the name you give for the image and put some new files
under it. In the disk->disk mode it is going to duplicate the source
exactly and wipe out whatever was on the target just like an image->disk
run would.

Hi Simon: I'm very glad that disaster was averted. We'll have to see what Steven Shiau says about your experience. I can't explain it. But I must say: I've been using clonezilla-live for a couple of years now, backing up to a variety of targets via ssh and local drives via USB, IDE and SATA interfaces, and I don't recall clonezilla EVER deleting anything during its backup process. It has an algorithm for naming the target directory and saves the image files there. It shows you this name and you have the opportunity of modifying it. It also warns you about what it is going to do, and gives you a chance to bail out. When restoring a partition, it gives you extra warnings. So I am truly puzzled about what happened to you. I rechecked the drives, and I was very very very lucky. I had accidentally selected sdc2 for the TARGET image, when I had thought that I had selected /dev/sdb2 where the precious backed up data lies. The data is still there. However, what concerns me if that CZ still uses an entire disc directory to write its file system into, and if one selected the top level of the mount then all data there will disappear. I think that it ought to be clearer that it shall delete all data in that directory first, as the contents of the other drive shows. Final question: Can I use a set-up like this? /dev/sdc2 for the CZ operating system area. /dev/sdc2 for the target image. /dev/sda1 for the source partition. Regards, S. PS. USB drive has been disconnected and placed into a cupboard for safe keeping. Simon Loewen wrote: > Dear all Clonezilla users, > > Today, I used Clonezilla for the first time. Dear all Clonezilla users, Today, I used Clonezilla for the first time. As a test I decided to see how it worked. I used the 'clone partition to an image' option ( I cannot remember the exact terminology). Clonezilla asked me where it could write the TARGET images to. I instructed it to use my USB *BACKUP* disc under the directory /, expecting it to write a file into it. No, it deleted everything and wrote this onto the disc partition: # ls -l /media/1.2.2-26/ total 25 -r--r--r-- 1 sloewent root 107 2009-07-20 03:38 Clonezilla-Live-Version -r--r--r-- 1 sloewent root 17982 2009-07-19 02:50 COPYING dr-xr-xr-x 2 sloewent root 2048 2009-07-20 03:38 isolinux dr-xr-xr-x 2 sloewent root 2048 2009-07-20 03:38 live dr-xr-xr-x 5 sloewent root 2048 2009-07-20 03:38 utils As a result, I have lost all my backups, including all my work related to music that I have had since 2001. All files. Everything. Yes, this does equate to a heavy financial loss. Yes, I cannot reproduce the data. Yes, I lost the invoices that I had to keep for tax purposes thatI have to produce some time next year. * Does anyone know of any tools that can recover lost files? The filesystem type is ext3. * Regards, S. PS. Of course, I thank-you in advance if I am not lectured about keeping files in disc one partition and not having at least two or three disc backups, but discs are not that cheap, and I had expected Clonezilla to at least state that it was going to delete everything under the directory. Agreed, this was still a user-error. |

Steven, After trying Ubuntu 9.0.4 Server, it found the RAID without issue. It loaded a module called dcdbas (Dell Systems Management Base Driver) which seems to help. Then it finds the device through /dev/mapper. Steve On 8/12/09 10:35 AM, "Steven Shiau" <st...@nc...> wrote: Actually I have no idea since I have no such hardware here. Maybe you can try to google to find the module name, or try to find that on a working GNU/Linux system. What's the OS inside the RAID hard drive ? Steven. Steven, Thanks for your reply. On my PC, GRUB is installed on the / (root) partition & I boot into Ubuntu 9.04 from the NT bootloader using the bootpart method ( http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm) as mentioned at http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f11.html#install. I could not find Clonezilla Live 20090727-jaunty anywhere in the Synaptic Package Manager, but it is there on the Clonezilla Sourceforge Project page. http://sourceforge.net/projects/clonezilla/files/ Will try out the Jaunty version of Clonezilla. Thanks, Jay Mistry _PS_ As other Linux distributions with newer Linux kernel have support for the ext4 file system (eg Fedora 11), many users who also use Windows w/ Linux & boot through the Windows NT loader would also put GRUB on the / (root) partition of their Linux install. With the Intel chipset, I had higher hopes, now, but from the time I've spent googling this, quite a few have called what Intel is offering fakeraid. The OS that was on the system was XP, but I've removed it and tried Ubuntu Desktop 9 and Centos 5.1. Centos recognized it as a dmraid. Dell claims it is hardware raid, but their sadly mistaken. If I had to run Linux on this for deployment to our engineers, I would not care since I'd turn off the fakeraid but they need Windows. Thanks. Clonezilla live 1.2.2-26 does support to save and restore ext4 partition. However, if grub is installed on an ext4 partition, Clonezilla live 1.2.2-26 won't handle that correctly. It's recommended to use Clonezilla live 20090727-jaunty to deal with ext4, since ubuntu jaunty has a patch to make grub work with ext4 partition. BTW, a reminder: ext4 is not officially by grub. I used Clonezilla Live CD (1.2.2-14) to make a backup image of the / (root) and /home partitions of Ubuntu 9.04. Both these partitions are formatted as ext4. It could make the image and save it properly (saved to another NTFS partition of 2nd HD on same PC). Howevr there were some error messages in the console about not being able to mount the ext4 partitions properly. Is there an issue with imaging ext4 type partitions or does Clonezilla LIve CD (latest stable version) have support for reliable ext4 FS backups ? The reason Clonezilla does not is because all the device name clonezilla will look for is /dev/[hs]d[a-z], not /dev/md* Maybe we will try to support Linux software RAID in the future. Steven, I have not tried Clonezilla live 20070729-jaunty . I am not optimisic that it will work, here's why: Intel does not have a low-level RAID driver for the ICH9R unlike a LSI MegaRAID in the 2.6.30 kernel. I see a default SATA drivers, but the issue isn't with finding the local disks but the RAID device. As a test, I tried a RH5.1 install and with the dm_mapper, it was able to find the RAID1_TEST device I created, but I don't know believe Clonezilla will scan for RAID devices other than LSI MegaRAID. How about Clonezilla live 1.2.2-26 or 20090727-jaunty ? Both of them come with different kernels. Regards, Steven. Hi, I have tried to image 3 different dell systems with clonezilla-live-1.2.2-25.iso. It does work on my Dell XPS M1210 so I don't think its an issue with the disk. The system is unable to find the hard drive, it just keeps a repeating loop of trying to find the drive. Any ideas on why it wouldn't work? Thanks, Rich |

We have a Dell T3400 with a built-in Intel ICHR9 SATA RAID controller (Intel Matrix Storage Option). With a two-disc system, we have configured RAID-1 and RAID-0. When we try to clone the disks, Clonezilla has trouble reading/writing to the drives. Clonezilla sees two drives but not one. One drive maybe recognized (manufacturer name and disk size) while the other is not recognized. To image the system, we had to use dd option but it would not restore. We're stuck. Any thoughts? Thanks. Hi Kevin, There is a partition table file in the image dir, e.g. http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/doc/showcontent.php?topic=02_Restore_disk_image the file "hda-chs.sf" is the partition table for hda, and its format is for sfdisk. Therefore you can manually restore the partition by: sfdisk /dev/hda < hda-chs.sf //NOTE// sfdisk is a very powerful tool, which means it might make all your data on the disk disappear. Therefore use it very carefully. BTW, there is a tool called "testdisk" included in the Clonezilla live. It's also a good to "guess" and recovery the lost partition table. You can try it, too. Good luck. Steven. Kevin W. Wall wrote: > Months back I used Clonezilla-live (1.2.2.something) to do a full image > backup of an internal hard drive to an external USB hard drive. It's been a while since I used Clonezila but if I remember correctly, when you perform the cloning...in the directory where the actual image is stored, there will be a file called sda-mbr (assuming sda drive). That's the Master Boot Record (first 512 bytes of drives) and the last 64 bytes there contains the actual partition table. You need to boot with a Live CD (I guess you can use Clonezilla and bring up the shell) and do this: # If you have a USB jump drive put in...so we can backup the current MBR # just in case... dd if=/dev/sda of=/mnt/usbdrive/sda-crippled.mbr bs=512 count=1 # Now we're going to try to restore the actual partition table. I would # restore the whole MBR but here's this way to restore ONLY the p.table DISCLAIMER: You use this at entirely your own risk! cd /to/original/backup/directory/ dd if=sda-mbr of=/dev/sda bs=1 count=64 skip=446 seek=446 If you want to restore the whole MBR: dd if=sda-mbr of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 HTH, Jorge |

Months back I used Clonezilla-live (1.2.2.something) to do a full image backup of an internal hard drive to an external USB hard drive. The internal disk was Linux-only and had a separate boot partition w/ MBR. File systems were all either ext2 (boot partition) or ext3 or swap. Running OpenSUSE 11.0 if that matters. Weeks ago, my son power-cycled the PC and it seems to have caused the the partition table to have been completely wiped and unfortunately, I don't have a hard copy of it anywhere. Am unable to check the file systems via fsck but have been able to successfully mount of few of the file systems (read-only just in case) and the data itself seems to be intact. Since it's been months since my latest backup (my bad; I figured I could get away w/ it since it's only used by my son playing BZFlag and developing BZFlag maps), I'd prefer not to simply restore the disk image, but rather would like to use the Clonezilla-live saved image from my USB drive to ONLY RESTORE THE PARTITION TABLE, but NOT any of the partitions. Any pointers (URLs are fine if you point to the right section) of how to do this? I read something about a '-j0' option to restore partition table, but it says not to use if I have logical drives and I don't recall if this OpenSUSE was installed / configured using LVM or not. (It's was an upgrade from OpenSUSE 10.1 which was build using a custom partitioning scheme.) Is there a way to tell if it was using LVM and logical partitions? And if it was, what then? I could just restore the whole drive and my son will be SOL wrt his BZFlag maps. My only "punishment" would be to have to do all the OpenSUSE updates again and put up with my son castigating me for not doing more regular backups. (Something I told HIM to do which is why I gave him a USB thumb drive.) Anyway, any help would be appreciated. TIA, -kevin -- Kevin W.
