1) Probably a question for Alistair so if no one else can help I'll repost next week. I have a (potential) client who will be setting up bilingual English/Spanish teaching resources and whose staff are mostly bilingual. They probably lack technical expertise in things like XML files etc. but will be more than capable of translating educational terminology etc. So, is there a idiot's guide to using Alistair's localisation features for Bodington? 2) Another requirement of this client is to be able to quickly and easily set up new buildings each with its own administrative zone. At present creating administrative zones is something that involves bringing Bodington down and running a script of some sort on the database. So, to make life easier for my client (and anyone else who wants to host a shared Bodington installation for multiple clients) I'm thinking of adding zone management functionality. Adding a zone would create the zone itself and a set of groups in the same way as the Bodington installation code but doing it at runtime. So, can I check that people are O.K. with this plan? The idea would be to add a create zone link to the manage page of floors, suites, plain rooms which is visible only with sysadmin access. The create zone template would simply ask for a zone prefix and zone name and would then create the zone and create group structures at the location where the user invoked the functionality. Does this seems alright? Is anyone already working on something similar? Jon |

I've come across what might be a bug in Java 1.5.0 It first showed up when I upgraded our system to 1.5.0 and file uploads stopped working with mvnForum behind a Guanxi guard. They worked fine if mvnForum was not behind the guard. At first I thought this was a problem with Guanxi and contacted Alistair, but I now know the problem actually lies in Java (humble apologies and cakes to Alistair). When an mvnForum user tried to upload a file, he/she was presented with a null pointer exception. This was generated in mvnForum (actually in net.myvietnam.mvncore.fileupload.FileUpload) at the following code: HttpServletRequest req; public static final String CONTENT_TYPE = "Content-type"; String contentType = req.getHeader(CONTENT_TYPE); I put a bit of debugging code into the mvnforum and guanxi code and was able to show that the 'content-type' header was arriving at the guard OK and was being passed through to the mvnForum class when the guard rewrote the request. According to the Java docs, the string passed to request.getHeader() is case insensitive. However, the exception went away when I changed the code to read: public static final String CONTENT_TYPE = "content-type"; Seems the definition of case-insensitive isn't quite what you might expect. I've just finished committing some code to the questionnaire tool to bodington HEAD, which was specifically to address the issue of 'partially anonymous' questionnaires, specifically being able to have an attributed non-respondents list. When creating a questionnaire, you now have the option of 'partially anonymous'. This insists on a deadline, which acts as the end-point for submissions and the start-point for reviewing of results. As results get submitted the fully-attributed non-respondents list dwindles. The point of the deadline is that anonymity can not be leaked over time by comparing received results against the non-respondents list - the resource owner gets all the results at once when the deadline is reached, so they can not easily attribute results to (known) individuals (deducible from the non-respondents list). The other two 'anonymity' options are fully attributed - you can see exactly whose result is which and fully anonymous - you just see how many have and haven't responded. -- + - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + | Alexis O'Connor, VLE Developer (http://bodington.org) | | OUCS, 13 Banbury Road, Oxford, OX2 6NN, UK. | | Tel. +44 (0)1865 283661 | + - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + |

Perception 4.2 is up and running, but not accessible outside of Leeds. What a bitch! A lovely new server, but I made the mistake of installing Windows Server 2003, IIS 6.0 and SQL Server 2005, a step too far in advance of QuestionMark. After six phone calls to their technical helpdesk, I ended up on first name terms with their advisers and telling them how to install the damned thing. From goolies, ghosties, things that gang bump in the night and Microsoft server-side applications, dear Lord preserve us! All I have to do now is to shib it. Then I can stick its (no apostrophe) WSDL file in the jUDDI suppository and wee Brian can work his magic... Aggie -----Original Message----- From: bod...@li... I take it the XP group hugs and pair bonding phase must be complete. All phases of SOCKET are on target and the codebase is taking shape on our internal CVS suppository. WSDL to WAR is go! Network re-configuration and tooling-up has kept us busy for a couple of weeks, but we're back on the wire. Our new Dell 2850 - "The Beast" - is ready to spit fire. We have an IIS server up ready to load Perception. The servlet factory is just about to produce. We've got a nice servlet filter/XSLT presentation layer on the bubble. We have about 39 sample services for rpc-style testing. A periodic table application is waiting for the document-style testing. A JSF/Spring/Hibernate admin app using Matt Raible's superb Equinox 1.2 is well underway. We're shoving Apache Derby on jUDDI's rear end (ooh err, missus) for maximum portability. That happens to me all the time - because I forget to send in mail from the same mail account I subscribed with. You tend to get quite a prompt error message so I just repost from the correct account and it gets through with no problem. I suppose I could subscribe with multiple email accounts but they all filter through to the same inbox so I'd get multiple copies.
