John Where are you entering the focal length? The Astrotortilla GUI does not require it. You can enter Scale Min and Scale max to cover the entire range of FOVs that you might encounter. It would add a few seconds to solution, but noting drastic. A solved image will display actual field of view dimensions. From that you can calculate f.L. if you know your camera sensor pixel size and pixel dimensions. Bryan

New user. I get a "Failed to Solve" message in the end. It took a photo and goes trough the process, so it communicate with the camera. The problem seems to be not communication with the mount. I set it up using this : https://www.lightvortexastronomy.com/tutorial-setting-up-and-using-astrotortilla-for-plate-solving.html The connection is ASCOM scope and then Celestron.

huh. Thanks very much for the link. As I read that thread the 41xx indexes may be appropriate for my 3.5 degree FOV. The 4100 set is an alternative index set for wide FOV imaging, not recommended for anything narrower than 3 degrees.

I noticed today that astrometry.net had solved my image with a 4111.fits vs the 42xx I have in my directory. I googled and found the 41xx set at http://data.astrometry.net/4100/ . I put them into the data directory and now i get 10 second solves. That's great but does it make sense? what are the 41xx fits files vs the 42xx files?

I started the Scale Low / High at 1 and 2 (degwidth) As Kevin notes, once AT solves an image, it will reset the Min/Max to bracket the image more closely. Of course, this means you have to reset the Min/Max when you change equipment. Also, note that I use astrometry.net 0.8. This removes the FAST_CWD error (at least for me). Peter - sounds like you and I are int he same boat. I was able to get AT to solve a number of photos from 2 different setups. If I set my min/max at 0, 180 after the first solve (maybe 150 seconds), AT over writes the min/max and the second time it solves it much faster. Important to note I am only doing this by reading jpegs not live. That comes when the skies clear. But still getting that FAST_CWD error. Kevin

Hi Bryan, latest update is that I could finally solve some of my photos, however, it took ages to solve. One photo took over 500 seconds and other one took ove 900 seconds, while your test photo of the M86 took just over 33 seonds to solve. Anything in the settings I can improve to get faster solving? My PC has 8 cores and 16 gig of ram with an i7 chip...(so this is not slow processor problem) on Windows 10? Thanks for your input Peter

I have been struggling with this for the last few days. Bryan - I have followed your tutorial and can get M86 to solve in less than 30 seconds. The problem I am having is some of my photos will solve and some will not. It has been crappy weather here for the last week, so all my testing is being dopne with files. A few work, more than a few do not. I have been try8ing to compare files to see what works best - any thoughts on what it is - contrast or? I have determined the number of stars found is...

Hi Bryan, the latest up date of my story, I have now been able to solve your M86 photos an 33 seconds after I changed the custom options from the sigma information to the downsample2 overwrite info and the scale min/max to 1 and 2 respectively. Now I will try to solve some of my photos. My smallest deg is 0.23 and my max is 1.6 degrees...with different scopes and cameras. So I set the min/max to 0 and 2 degrees respectively. I'll keep you posted> Thanks Peter

Bryan, I tried to run the M86 image and it did not solve in just over 5 seconds. I also read your instructions which comes together with the M86 image and I found one instruction telling me to run the set up of cygwin within the AT program files. When I tried this I got again error messages (see screenshot). So I am not sure if I need to run this set up or not and while I used the first indicated window for the dowload (as per the screenshot photo) I tried many different locations on this download...

I wonder if I have I problem when installing AT as there is always this message. (see enclosed photo). I have downloaded cygwin files seperately for the formats I need and tried to install them all over the places for AT to find it but my plate solving is ended within 2 seconds with no results. Dave, The ansvr install is still a little old but if it's working then stick with it. A few hints: The speed improvement is likely due to the Scale Refine = 0.1. After the first solve, it adjusts the Scale Min and Scale Max parameters to the image width +/- the scale refine (so in this case, +/- 10%). Note that the Scale parameters are only for the width of the image. Keeping those numbers close together will speed up solve times dramatically. The downsample can help if you have large images. It...

Hi Peter & Bryan Getting back to Peter's original question, I followed the instructions under the Astrotortilla FAQs for installing a newer version of the solver (see "How do I install the astrometry.net plate solver?") and this runs without triggering the Fast_CWD warning. You just need to change the file location of the bash.exe file in the AT setup. Under Win 10, mine was C:\users\Dave\appdata\local\cygwin_ansvr\bin\bash.exe --login -c "%s". I have not tested this extensively but it certainly...

Hi Bryan - I think that my machine with limited RAM benefits from having minimal indices - tonight I hope to try AT on my fast desktop machine with 16Gb and a core i7, to compare performance.. I noticed today that different images appear to solve better with different configs, however rather than continue playing with these, I will concentrate on getting it running with BYEOS and solving in real time. Cheers Dave

Bryan Many thanks indeed for that - I have just tried your settings on a couple of JPEGs and and they are now solving in 12 to 18 seconds (still using a single index file)! I am using an Asus Ultrabook (Core i7 with 256Gb SSD) however it has only 4Gb RAM which is hard- wired to the motherboard and cannot be expanded in order to maintain the small form factor of this PC, but with your settings it is giving excellent results. Dave I do not think the error is critical. However, unless your PC is VERY old, 2.5 minutes is quite long. My soultions take 20-40 seconds. I do not restrict the index files. Here are my setttings. Scale refine 0.1 Search radius 45 --downsample 2 --overwrite --noplots

Hi Peter, I am a very new user of Astrotortilla (5 days) and get the same Warning message using the 64 bit version of AT on Win 10. I have, however been successful at solving photos using settings as suggested on various internet sites. I then determined which index file(s) provided these solutions (a single file in all instances for me) and removed...

The FAQ section states the following: The current AT installable astrometry.net solver build is very old. It is recommended to install the build made by ADG Software from http://adgsoftware.com/ansvr/ and install without starting the server. You can copy your existing index files to the location where it installs the astrometry.net solver as a cygwin environment. Typically that is under application data folder, on Windows 10 it is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\cygwinansvr and use that as the...

The solver lives in the Cygwin world and doesn't understand Windows paths. Since your data is under the cygwin_ansvr -directory, you should be OK with "/usr/share/astrometry/mydata/" as the index location path. //Antti

  • otisme otisme posted a comment on discussion Bugs and issues

Appears to me there's a bug related to "Didn't understand this config file line.." If I point to data.save the original folder for index files in astrometry.net solver, I get that didn't understand message curiously giving the file as "data.save instead of "data.save" in other words the interpreter is missing an apostrophe....no solution found yet

Review what index files you are using to make sure they cover the field of view of the images Convert one of the FITS files to JPG and see if AT will solve. If it does, then the FITS header may be incomplete / corrupt. Go through the tutorial from a few years ago. Good luck! Bryan

I have tried a number of images and cant get Astro Tortilla to solve any of them. They solve quickly when I upload them to Astrometry.net but when I test on Astro Tortilla (no mount connected, camera set for "file open dialog" and pick any of these same files. It goes through all the .fits files, takes forever, and fails on each .fits file. Any suggestions?
