The output buffering I didn't know about but looks like it would solve my main concern with what I was thinking. I still think it would be nice to have the API functions make the actual call to the error_handling function with the page controlling the process by either supplying an error handler, or passing a boolean that indicates whether to return an error code or call an error handler. Either of these could be passed in (with default values) or could be globals that you could set. The details could be implemented many ways. See my other email for why I think the API functions should handle the actual error_triggering. I also notice that PHP allows you to register custom error handlers and trigger your own errors: http://php.benscom.com/manual/en/ref.errorfunc.php But you only get generic error constants and without being able to have ERROR_PERMISSION_DENIED, etc. I'm not sure if it's flexible enough for what we need.
