Hello Christiaan, thanks for the speedy reply. It took ME some time to reproduce my error... 1.) What I did wrong was substituting "für" with "f{\"ur" so that was the problem. It would have been right to use "f{\"u}r" instead Still: when I put in a macro "zfg = zeitschrift f{\"u}r Geschichtswissenschaft" it doesn't work. (it just keeps "zfg" in either footnotes or bibliography) I am using jurabib, is that the reason? I'm currently not sure... Another thing linked to your answer: you suggested to use a different encoding. For whatever reason so far I've not been able to get anything "Texed" right when I use sth. else then "applemac" as encoding. And if I change the encoding of bib-files to sth. else than the main-document I am worried (and feel lost anyway). I am using OSX 10.4.1 German with Texshop and Bibdesk. Any hints or suggestions? 2.) I am not sure if Your idea to change the translations will help: I'd need them when I quote German literature etc. and would need the English version when quoting English sources. In jurabib there is a function to put in a "@language"-field which should sort out these things by itself. I've to ask the jurabib-list about this.
