About

Teaching scientific software online. CoCalc is a virtual online computer lab: it takes away the pain of teaching scientific software. Every student works 100% online – inside their own, isolated workspace. Follow the progress of each student in real-time. At any time you can jump into a file of a student, right where they are working. Use TimeTravel to see each step a student took to get to the solution. Integrated chat rooms allows you to guide students directly where they work or discuss collected files with your teaching assistants. The project's Activity Log records exactly when and by whom a file was accessed. Forget any complicated software setup – everyone is able to start working in seconds! Since everyone works with exactly the same software stack, any inconsistencies between your and your students' environments are eliminated.

Overleaf comes with a complete, ready to go LaTeX environment which runs on our servers. With Overleaf you get the same LaTeX set-up wherever you go. By working with your colleagues and students on Overleaf, you know that you're not going to hit any version inconsistencies or package conflicts.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I like having realtime collaboration for everything, including file editing, Jupyter notebooks, terminals, X11, etc. Fully usable in web browser.
  • It's completely browser-based, so it can easy run on lower-end systems. Live-editing feature allows multiple users to work on the same code simultaneously without needing to refresh. Mobile version is also better than most other similar apps. It also allows installing of different python modules and packages, which makes it suitable for all kinds of projects.

Cons

  • There are many exciting features that still haven't been implemented.
  • The interface is definitely not the best. It is also difficult to organize or browse through the notebooks when you have large pieces of code.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Overleaf is an online LaTeX editor, which makes it easy to write LaTeX independent of the device You are using. The free plan offers all You need to write beautiful and very precise customizable document layouts. You would have all Your projects in a user friendly web interface, where You can organize them in folders and assign labels. Another pro in my opinion would be that they offer special prices for students and groups of students.

Cons

  • Version Control for longer than one session is only possible in the paid plan, as well as Git/GitHub or DropBox integration. If you are starting from scratch, You will have to invest some time in learning how to equip yourself with the necessary packages and get handy in typing the basic commands. The best way of doing this would be to get hands on your project with the help of one of the templates overleaf offers (CV, formal letter, paper, book, etc.).
