I too have a wall street with 512 MB of RAM. Had to remove one of the RAM boards to be able to install 10.2 without crashing and even then I had to keep the mouse in motion or the system would lock in the middle of the install as it appeared to enter sleep mode and die or actually more likely shut off the LCD. Once installed, I replaced the second RAM board and run now with 512K, not happily though. I get crashes where the screen blanks out and then sprouts, sometimes colored and sometimes monotone, lines on the left side of the display. The system appears active at this point and I am attempting to get myself set up to telnet into it and try to run one of the screen setup routines from the startup sequence to see if it restores operation. I doubt that Apple will see the wisdom in supporting modified older machines, but it would be a wise thing to do. My Lucent card works wonderfully with the latest Wireless driver, still no Appletalk printing, but all else is fine. -- Richard Yensen, Ph.D. Director, Orenda Institute Baltimore, Maryland FAX:(410) 664-5111 ry...@or... |

Since installment of the driver, I have to restart to see my PCMCIA memory card appear on the desktop. Logging out and in doesn't help, nor can I have a window that shows the memory card drive. Another striking thing is that when I log in, regardless or not I've the PCMCIA network card installed, the system preferences opens up, showing the wirelessconfig control panel, even if it was not active upon restart. The wirelessdriver prefpane is in the login startup items for some reason. MacOS 10.1.5 ard |

Sounds like you've got a build compiled in debug mode. I'll be issuing another build soon with AppleTalk support and I'll make sure that one runs clean in console mode. In the meantime, you could rebuild it from the source or get someone to do it for you. I'd offer, but I'm really busy this week. -Rob -- "Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur." Martin, I have one of the first wallstreets (292MHz) and I have been able to get it to boot and run with 386MB of memory, in 10.2.1 but it likes to crash with the extra memory installed. I actually could not get through the installation process with the memory installed. So I took it out and installed 10.2 and upgraded to 10.2.1 and then reinstalled the memory. This worked for a couple of days, but the crashes got to me. I am now running with 192MB and no crashes. I also observed that my laptop would overheat, so I am now much more careful with it now since I don't think the fan turns on at the appropriate temperature. Some of crashes were related to this since the extra RAM makes it get warmer easier. I also still get wake from sleep crashes, so this problem has not been resolved yet. You might be able to get your extra RAM to work, but it is definitely picky. The good news is the wireless driver works great in 10.2.1. Thanks. Steve, The problem you have is that the netgear card you bought probable isn't supported (it's acutally a MA401RA, new revision). They have changed the card name. But you can add it to the plist and it will work. Check out the article the Yuriwho wrote on 9/1/02 called "Cam my Cards be Supported?" It tells you how to do it. -Rob __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New DSL Internet Access from SBC & Yahoo! http://sbc.yahoo.com |

Hi, I have a Wallstreet II (300MHz) with 512MB of Ram. No problems installing Jaguar or with the wireless driver. B/W I understand that it is possible to have 1GB in the wallstreets it has to do with the way the memory is paired. It needs to be 2-2-2 not 2-3-2 (i think) but they was an apple knowledge base article or developers note about it. -ROB __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? After you add that to the proper config file, it should work (though WEP is currently nonfunctional). -Doug |

My Wallstreet has 384MB, but I had to remove the 256MB card in order to perform the Jaguar installation. The installation was flawless after. After the installation, I was able to put the 256MB back in. It is recognized and works just fine. Thanks for the painless install process Apple. I've run into the same symptom/problem trying to compile xfree86-rootless package, but I haven't tried doing the memory swap. I should note that my PB has a Crescendo 500MHz G3 upgrade card. I seem to remember a firmware? update from Sonnet that allowed for more than the original memory ceiling. I don't know if that is involved or not. Wallstreet G3 w/ 500MHz Crescendo G3 upgrade Mac OSX 5.1.2 384 MB (128 + 256) Orinoco Gold The current wireless beta patch seems to work fine on my setup. I think I even have 128-bit WEP working (judging by changing the WEP code and having it stop working). - Ed |

I also saw this reported on Macintouch Tuesday morning and as I posted there as well, it's not true--at least not for me. I'm running OS 10.2.1 on a Wallstreet PB with 384MB (256MB on it on the bottom RAM card). It's the same RAM I've had since way back when and it's not been a problem. BTW, I'm running a G4 500Mhz Bluechip upgrade. No problems--and 10.2 is way faster on the Wallstreet than 10.1.5 was. I've installed the Wireless driver beta4 on my PowerBook G3 FireWire (Pismo) running Mac OS X 10.1.5. The wireless config pref panel shows up, but everything is greyed out. The network pref panel shows no 'en1' or 'en2' option. The card is a NETGEAR MA401, which is listed in the supported cards page. Any help greatly appreciated!! Steve The troubleshooting info script output is below. It seems to see the card since it can identify it; then it says "WirelessDriver: Couldn't find a WirelessDriver service in registry - is the card loaded?" The card is in the slot, and the green light is on, so it looks loaded to me. kmodstat says [localhost:~] sderose% sudo kmodstat -n com.apple.iokit.IOPCCardFamily Password: Id Refs Address Size Wired Name (Version) <Linked Against> 49 0 0xf74b000 0x1e000 0x1d000 com.apple.iokit.IOPCCardFamily (1.1.3) <11> [localhost:~] sderose% [localhost:~] sderose% sudo kmodstat -n org.noncontiguous.WirelessDriver Id Refs Address Size Wired Name (Version) <Linked Against> [localhost:~] sderose% The second one looks awful suspicious.... When I try to follow the config instructions, there is no 'en1' or 'en2' in the network preferences pane; I only have "Built-in Ethernet", "Internal Modem", and "irDA Modem Port" in the Active Network Ports list. The Built-in Ethernet is in use and configured for local DHCP via a LinkSys router to DSL. Any ideas on how to get this up and running? Unfortunately, at 233 mhz, the system was still sooooo syrupy-slow that I elected to spend the past two days retrograding my machine to OS 9.2.2 only. I have Jaguar running on my G4 tower, and it=B9s just great there, but my between lack of support for my mode/printer port and the prfoundly irritating sluggishness, my once-mighty Wallstreet was just not meant to be a Jaguar-based machine. Hi, Every Apple Tech doc I have ever seen has consistently stated that the WallStreet models will only support a maximum of 192 megs of RAM. With that said..... I had 384 megs in mine with 10.1 and 384 with 10.2. It still sees all of it. And if I can find a "low-profile" 256 SODIMM, (for a decent price) I will have 512. I think that the issue is more about the RAM chip then the OS or hardware. Hi there, I have a D-Link/NetEasy DRC650 WirelessLAN and a Belkin F5D6020g WLAN card. The first should be the same as the DWL 650, the latter I don't know. The D-Link card showed up on the desktop of a friend's G3 PowerBook immediately after insertion. So did the Belkin card. Couldn't test the cards as there was no access point available, though. I have also tried to run them in a desktop PC running Windows ME. The PC recognizes the PCI-adapter card with the TI1410 chip, but not the wireless cards. Same thing happened with a PCI adapter card with a Ricoh controller. I then connected a Belkin WLAN USB Adapter to the PC's USB port and this works just fine, except for encryption. Both the Belkin and the D-Link card are WEP128 compliant. Could they be used to replace the internal Lucent Orinoco Silver card (WEP64) of the original AirPortBaseStation? There was a how-to in c't 24/2001 computer magazine, replacing the silver card with a gold one. Regards Wolfgang |

I do not usually respond to technical forums but this was such a good story I could not resist passing on my experience. I had just upgraded to a new install of Jaguar on a fresh newly formatted IBM ultra ATA 30 gig hard disk on my PB G3 400 (Wallstreet) with a Skyline wireless PCMCIA card and WirelessDriverBeta5_1 installed. The 802.11b connection to both an Airport hub and a Lynksys wireless router worked first time flawlessly. I had formatted the 30 gig hard drive with the Jaguar install CD with no OS 9 drivers. The hard drive worked for a couple of days and then stopped spinning up. The techs at the local Mac shop thought a number of things. They thought that the ultra ATA 30 gig needed too much power. They thought that the hard disk ribbon was bad. They thought that my PB G3 was too old to handle a hard disk with 10.2 only drivers on it. However, the WirelessDriver WORKED until the end. I put the old Fugitsu 6 gig drive back in my PB G3 that had both 9 & 10 drivers on it and OS 10.1.5. Since WirelessDriver5_1 actually worked under 10.2 I upgraded to 10.2 and installed that. It looked like it should be working but the EN1 option did not show up. I uninstalled WD5_1, rebooted, installed WD4, rebooted, and still no EN1. So, since I had read somewhere (in the docs?) that WD5_1 could install "over" WD4 I did that, rebooted, and was presented with two WirelessConfig entries in my "Other" System Preferences Pane. Disregarding that issue temporarily I clicked on Network and sure enough EN1 was now an option. I moved it to the top spot above Ethernet and selected it. BAM! Full speed ahead... - pi - |
