I successfully installed WirelessDriver 5.1b for Jaguar on my Lombard=20 running a Farallon Skyline card using the following procedure--but not=20= until spending half a day doing it. I used a combination of two different procedures offered by other=20 contributors on this list earlier, neither one of which worked for me=20 by itself. I had a number of other roadblocks I ran into. The=20 combination of the two earlier procedures and my own fixes for the=20 roadblocks I ran into today are all incorporated below. Some of these=20 things may be obvious to more experience people, but to the=20 non-mechanics like me just trying to get the old card to work with OSX,=20= these are the things that I needed to know. I suggest something like=20 this go into the FAQ until the installer can be fixed. Procedure 1. Remove your wireless card (the following procedure _did not work_=20 when I attempted it with the card still in the slot). 2. Download and/or copy and expand the WirelessDriverBeta5_1.tgz=20 archive. 3. Install according to directions. [Standard installation doesn=92t place one file correctly so fix as=20 follows.] 4. Open the folder called "Installers" 5. Right-click "WirelessDriver.pkg" and select "Show Package Contents" 6. Open the "Contents" folder that appears and expand "Archive.pax.gz" [Be sure Archive.pax now appears in your Home directory (~). My=20 standard Stuffitt utility handled gunzip automatically but not pax,=20 thus:] 7. Open the Terminal and extract the directory from the pax archive by=20= copying or entering: pax -r -f Archive.pax 8. "WirelessDriver.kext" is the only file in that archive, and it=20 should now be in your Home directory. 9. Enter the following commands in succession, entering in your=20 Administrator password when prompted: sudo mv ~/WirelessDriver.kext=20 /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext [This moves the file to where it should have been to start with,=20 bypassing the security features that blocked the initial installation]. sudo chown -R root.wheel /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext [This gives the newly moved file the correct ownership/permissions.] 10. Shut down. Be sure your wireless card is NOT installed. 11. Restart 12. Now, insert the wireless card. Card light should be blinking at=20 this point. [When it was a solid light at this point, it subsequently didn't work. 13. Go to System Preferences:Network and set up your configuration=20 appropriately (the en1 should now be on the list). 14. Click on the WirelessConfig pane at the bottom and set up there. [I was unable to get encryption to work, but a closed network=20 configuration worked] Hope this helps save someone some time down the road.= |

Simple reply: Are you referring to the "Network Port Configurations" where you put a check into the checkbox? I presume you are, which is a bigger problem, but if you are just not seeing the Ethernet Adaptor (en1) choice in the pull-down menu, that checkbox might be the reason. --Marc February 7, 2003 @ 2:02 PM On 2/7/03 6:07 AM, nico dreher at nic...@hg... wrote: > I have already tried several times to install WirelessDriverBeta5_1 on my > PowerBook G3 (Lombard) running Mac OS X 10.2.3 but I always get the same > error: > When I install it I get to see WirelessConfig panel in the System > Preferences but there is no Ethernet Adaptor (en1) showing in the Network > panel that I could select. > > nico |

thanks for the details, most of us like to guess what hardware a user has in his system. Read my last posting Nico, you may find it helpful. Its also helpful to read the list rules and at least spend 10 minutes reading documentation included with the driver. Also I read a few posts from a list befor I submit a question to it. Its a good practice as you may fin= d the question your asking has been answered 10 times already. greg > I have already tried several times to install WirelessDriverBeta5_1 on > my PowerBook G3 (Lombard) running Mac OS X 10.2.3 but I always get the > same error: > When I install it I get to see WirelessConfig panel in the System > Preferences but there is no Ethernet Adaptor (en1) showing in the > Network panel that I could select. > > nico > > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > This SF.NET email is sponsored by: > SourceForge Enterprise Edition + IBM + LinuxWorld =3D Something 2 See! > http://www.vasoftware.com > _______________________________________________ > Wirelessdriver-support mailing list > Wir...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/wirelessdriver-support |

I have already tried several times to install WirelessDriverBeta5_1 on my PowerBook G3 (Lombard) running Mac OS X 10.2.3 but I always get the same error: When I install it I get to see WirelessConfig panel in the System Preferences but there is no Ethernet Adaptor (en1) showing in the Network panel that I could select. nico |

Further clarifications: I have now installed the driver - and uninstalled it, following the instructions on sourceforge to the letter - no fewer than eight times. It just isn't working. I still experience the same problems. The computer seems to recognize that the card is there, but fails to light it up in any way. - EN1 won't show up under Network/Show: - Wireless Config pane shows up completely grayed-out - Card names show up completely grayed-out under the toolbar card icon. I was hoping there was a simpler answer, but now here I am down on my knees before the august and generous members of this list, proffering the results of the Troubleshooter script (below). Please help. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Last login: Thu Feb 6 20:21:39 on ttyp1 /Volumes/WirelessDriver\ beta\ 5.1/Utilities/TroubWelcome to Darwin! leshooting\ Info.command; exit [slab:~] mackreed% /Volumes/WirelessDriver\ beta\ 5.1/Utilities/Troubleshooting\ Info.command; exit ### system info ProductName: Mac OS X ProductVersion: 10.2 BuildVersion: 6C115 Darwin slab.local. 6.0 Darwin Kernel Version 6.0: Sat Jul 27 13:18:52 PDT 2002; root:xnu/xnu-344.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC Power Macintosh powerpc ppc750 ### wireless driver files installed drwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136 Feb 6 19:58 WirelessDriver.kext drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 102 Jul 27 2002 IOPCCardFamily.kext 2003-02-06 20:21:55.682 defaults[413] The domain/default pair of (loginwindow, AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary) does not exist ### wirelesscard info | | "VersionOneInfo" = ("Lucent Technologies","WaveLAN/IEEE","V$ | +-o pccard@13 <class IOPCIDevice> | | | "device_type" = <"pccard"> | | | "name" = <"pccard"> | | +-o pccard156,2@1,0 <class IOPCCard16Device> | | "IOName" = "pccard156,2" | +-o pccard@13,1 <class IOPCIDevice> | | "device_type" = <"pccard"> | | "name" = <"pccard"> ### network info lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 16384 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000 gif0: flags=8010<POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST> mtu 1280 stf0: flags=0<> mtu 1280 en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet6 fe80::205:2ff:fed7:9cec%en0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x4 ether 00:05:02:d7:9c:ec media: autoselect (none) status: inactive supported media: none autoselect 10baseT/UTP <half-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex> 100baseTX <half-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex> ### wd command line tool status /Volumes/WirelessDriver beta 5.1/Utilities/Troubleshooting Info.command: WirelessConfig: command not found logout [Process completed] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- yrs, mack los angeles fa...@we... |

So far, however, I've been completely stumped: - EN1 won't show up under Network/Show: - Wireless Config pane shows up completely grayed-out - Card names show up completely grayed-out under the toolbar card icon. The cards lights are lit up the same way they light up when the card is in = a PC laptop. Perhaps it needs to be specifically supported in the driver? Just throwing out ideas here :). Thank you! OK it looks like you installed the driver properly but the driver=20 either doesn't load on startup or it doesn't recognize or work with=20 your card. If that is the first case start up the computer. Then open up the=20 terminal and type in sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext It should force load the WirelessDriver.kext . After you have done that=20= open System Preferences and click on the Network Pane. Click on the=20 Show pull down menu. And select Network Port Configurations. You should=20= see three ports now. Built-in Ethernet, Internal Modem and (if the=20 drivers works properly and the card is recognized) en1 port. Make sure the en1 port is on then click on the Network Port=20 Configurations and select en1 from the pulldown menu. Enter the=20 settings for it and when you are done Apply Now. If you still don't see the en1 port after you have loaded the driver=20 manuelly maybe the card is not working with the drivers even though it=20= looks like it should. Permission problems will prevent the beta5_1 driver from installing correctly. (I think its a permission problem, have no idea why else the folder would not copy into the intended place). If you install 10_5 onto a 10.2.3 system and things do not work as expected try this: 1. download WirelessDriverBeta5_1 dmg or the tgz 2. extract. this will create a new directory or a disk image. 3. in the folder "installers" find wirelessdriver.pkg 4. Right click (or ctrl click) on this file, select "show package content= s" 5. Open the fold "Contents" 6. Copy the file "Archive.pax.gz" to /tmp or simular. 7. cd into the directory you copied Archive.pax.gz to. extract file: gunzip Archive.pax.gz 8. extract the directory from the pax archive: pax -r -f Archive.pax 9. Move the directory created by the above command to the proper place: mv -r WirelessDriver.kext /System/Libary/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext 10. Adjust the ownership: chown -R root.wheel /System/Libary/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext I had to change my linksys wireless hub to use channel one. I had it and the other wireless clients using channel six. |

Hello, I am having problems using the LinkSys WPC11 with my notebook (Macintosh PowerBook G3 Series M5343). The links for the troubleshooting script on wirelessdirver.sourceforge.net are not working, the utilities dir is without files, I'm using the included scripts bundled with the driver installer. I have read the FAQ and other documents. The laptop is running 10.2.3 (6g30) on a 400MHz G3 with 192 MB of memory. I installed the driver (b5.1), turned computer off, installed wireless card, turned laptop on. The wireless config installs under system preferences, but all options are shaded. Going to the Network preferences, i see only the two original interfaces listed, internal modem and internal Ethernet. Selecting 'new' does not offer any new interfaces to add. I noticed a file does not exist where the FAQ section describing how to remove the driver mentions it should.=20 "/System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext" Any idea what I may want to try next? The card should work with the Wireless drivers. First install the=20 10.2.3 update. Highly recommended because of better PCCard support.=20 Then the Wireless driver b5 for Jaguar. I used Pacifist to install the=20= driver because the original installer is broken and installs the=20 Wireless.Prefpane in the wrong folder. With Pacifist can I install the=20= drivers where they should be. Anyway once you install the driver you have to add support for your=20 card as it is missing. To do that you have to open up the terminal and=20= type in this in the terminal. Each command is followed by return. cd /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext/Contents sudo pico Info.plist Enter your password when asked. The last command opens up the=20 Info.plist file in a terminal editor. Restart the computer and the Network Preferences should prompt when=20 opened that you have a new en1 or en2 port. Setup the en1 or en2 port=20 in the Network preferencens for your Airport settings and you should be=20= able to start surfing with the wireless card. If the Network=20 Preferences doesn't show up the card port then maybe the wireless=20 driver haven't loaded. If not open up the terminal and enter this=20 command. sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext Again enter the password when prompted. I have a Proxim RangeLAN-DS Support which we purchased for visitors to use if they had a (Windows) laptop and wanted internet access. Mac drivers are not included, and I hoped this Wireless driver that you made would allow me to use it on my Lombard Powerbook. If you can find a way to support this card, that would be awesome, Thank you! Anyone out there getting Rendezvous to work with there wireless card and the wireless driver? Works for me on a regular Built-In Ethernet connection, but not on my Ethernet Adapter (en1) wireless card. Larry |

I and some others now have Linksys cards working just fine in our non-Airport-Extreme-ready systems. You just need to edit the AppleAirPort2.kext Info.plist file to add an additional personality for pci1737,4320. Read about it on my weblog at http://www.kfu.com/~nsayer/mac/ |

I am under the impression that the Wireless Driver for OSX is only for PC cards/laptops and not PCI cards/desktops. Is that true? Are there any PCI cards, or other solutions, that are OS X compatible? I know that Proxim=B9s Skyline series has a PCI card which appears to be a =B3carrier=B2 for their PC card so that you can use the laptop card in a desktop? If that=B9s the case would the Wireless Driver for OSX then work? I have a B&W G3 which cannot use an Airport card and I really want to run O= S X on it and have wireless. Any thoughts? Thanks. I am using a Orinoco Gold card on a Wallstreet using a Netgear M314 and using WEP with no problems. Expect that the control panel does not pull the WEP setting from the prefs file, but WEP is working RB --- begin quoted text -Mailer: Apple Mail (2.551) Subject: [Wirelessdriver-support] How does wireless driver support Cardbus on Lombard laptops? I have a Orinoco Silver card, and have never had problems with 5.1beta (except that I can't use WEP with my NetGear MR314 router... but that's another story). Hats off to the authors and the numerous folks on the list who assist others. This question has to do with how the 5.1 beta overcomes a major problem with the Lombard laptops and 10.2.3 with respect to Cardbus support. It appears that Cardbus is not fully supported on Lombard in version 10.2.x. I have been reading may such issues on Apple's support forums, and I have officially received the following reply from Asante: ------------- Ron, The PowerBook/G3 Series (Bronze Keyboard) Codename: 101, Lombard CPU: PowerPC 750 CPU speed: 333/400 Mhz This failure has been verified by Asant=E9 in Apple's Labs. This is an issue with the Operating System (and Apple un-officially agrees with this assessment by Asant=E9). The CardBus card is not supported in the Lombard series G3 with OS/10.2.3. The issue here is a CardBus issue and not a problem with the up-grade card in this laptop. ------------- I have been trying to get an Asante 10/100 Friendlynet card working since Jaguar was released. They say it's a cardbus issue (supposedly confirmed by Apple, but there are no tech notes to support it). I say they are full of crap because my Orinoco Silver card (cardbus) works just fine. However, a lot of folks with Wallstreet and Lombard laptops are having a lot of cardbus issues. So the question is, is there some sort of fix for these cardbus issues in the wireless driver code? Thanks in advance!
