How would one go about setting up webmin to communicate with another webmin securely, across the net? By using an SSH tunnel.. ? In other words, I have a "master" webmin that uses other webmins to monitor servers, now I want to monitor a server that's not "in-house", but I don't want to send unencrypted messages/data across the world :-) (Using 1.290) -joho |

Better way is to choose some another company for webhosting. the data is transferred internal at the hosting company, and the ftp server is reachable only from within the hosting center. ok, someone in the same subnet may be able to listening to the stream, but this problem could be solved by encrypting the tgz (see ESR backup). i certainly would prefer ssh access to the backup space but ftp is what i get and the hosting package is very good otherwise. Why not to use dd and count feature? I have a script which creates defined "small pieces" of a large file. Then you can do everything you want with them. BTW - FTP backup is very unsecure. Do you really want to give me all your data? Better way is to choose some another company for webhosting. Of course this would not work on FreeBSD as /usr/lib/sendmail does not exist (at least in FreeBSD 5.X.) The correct path would be /usr/sbin/sendmail. The tricky part is the way the remote transfer comment (ssh, rsh or some FTP script) is called by the tar comment. Basically it gets fed all the data as input, and so doesn't have much opportunity to split it up. If I was creating a totally new backup module I'd have more flexibility, but since the Filesystem Backup module works by calling the tar and dump commands I have to fit in with the way they do things :( - Jamie |

You might want to try logging into Webmin, going to the Usermin Configuration module, clicking on Usermin Module Configuration -> Read Mail, and setting the 'Send mail via connection to' option to the hostname of the mail server on your network, or just localhost. By default Usermin sends mail by running the /usr/lib/sendmail command, but this may not work for some reason (ie. file permissions). - Jamie |

Hi there, I have the following problem; If people sent email from within usermin / read mail then the mail just dissapears. I can't find anythinf in the log files. I am using sendmail and I found out that if I log in as root or send mail from webmin / read users mail it sents it nicely. So it seems to be a rights problem. But what should I change? sendmail on freebsd 4. Thanks, Roger |

hi jamie, great! while you are on it, i tested a lot of backup programs which = support ftp transfers. as i realized, the holy grail seems to be (which = = noone has found yet, i mean, it's the holy grail ;) ) to make a backup = (and restore btw) to a remote server without firstly creating the whole = = archive locally (so that you don't need +50% free hdd space) it could work like this: 1) start multiple splits backup 2) when backup part$1 filesize=3Dx 2-1) pause backup 2-2) move part$1 to remote server (then delete it) 3) goto 1) for restore, this is what i wrote to one of the developers of a commerci= al = solution (which doesn't offer it): =3D=3Dcut-- - i have a multi-volume tgz backup on an ftp server - i have not enough room on the target server (the one on which the = restoration of the data will happen) to download first all archives and = = than extract them so what can i do here? ideally i would download the first volume, do a gunzip -c -S "" ./backup.tar.gzaa |tar -C ./ -xf - when the first one is extracted i delete it, download the second and so = = on.. but after the first archive everything comes to a halt with gunzip: ./backup.tar.gzaa: unexpected end of file tar: Read 8667 bytes from - tar: Unexpected EOF in archive tar: Unexpected EOF in archive tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now =3D=3Dcut-- which seems to be a limitation in gzip - maybe bzip handles it better.. anyway, thanks jamie, that you took on the problem, PAT On Mon, 07 Aug 2006 02:43:13 +0200, Jamie Cameron <jca...@we...> = = wrote: > On 6/Aug/2006 14:54 Pat Erler wrote .. >> hello, >> >> in my hosting plan i have backup space which i can use with ftp, >> unfortunately not with ssh. are there plans to add transferring backu= ps >> with ftp to the webmin filesystem backup? or, which custom command co= uld >> i use from within the module to transfer my backup file with ftp to t= he >> backup server? > > Hi Pat, > That would be a nice feature, but is tricky to implement as the > tar and fsdump commands are designed to call ssh or rsh for remote > backups.. Hi Pat, That would be a nice feature, but is tricky to implement as the tar and fsdump commands are designed to call ssh or rsh for remote backups.. However, I may be able to hack in support for a command that behaves like ssh, but uses FTP. I'll see if this can be done in the next Webmin release.. - Jamie |

Are you trying to set this globally, or on a per-user basis? Each user can set his own default from address by adding an entry to the address book, with the 'From address' column set to Yes. - Jamie |

Just now getting back to this... I've now got Webmin 1.290. Anyone have an idea about how to get my CD/DVD burner to even show up in webmin? (See original problem description below.) Hi i cannot change the From: address for replies. when i use Determine automatically it defaults to server, if i manually enter the value it defaults to server. This is the devel 1.224 version of usermin. is this because i have turned off the auto responder? my customers do not always change the From: address so i see some bounces when novice external users reply to the auto responder messages. is it possible to allow changes to the From address to be remembered?
