Out of the blue, I can't zoom anymore. I can "rotate", but not zoom. Has anyone run across this before? (WinXP, latest non-beta version of Vpython) -gary |

I'll pass along the following note I received from chu-ching huang <cc...@ma...>: ------------------------------------ Dear prof Bruce Sherwood: The latest VPython, VPython4 beta16, has been integrated into our LiveTeXmacs, based on Knoppix-5.1.0. There are many exclude features on LiveTeXmacs: 1. VPython is compliled from source directly on it. In other words, updating VPython is very easy since it owns all the necessary development files and dependent libraries; 2. Python-2.5.1 and Python modules, SciPy, VTK, Mayavi2, SimPy, ScientificPython, SimPy, pygame, Pmw/BLT, numpy, wxPython, PyGeo and Twisted added too. Almost tested and work except pyGeo. 3. Other CAS added, for instances: SAGE, maxima, octave, R, Axiom, Pari and yacas etc. The image file, LiveTeXmacs-1.0.6.11.iso, (a little big, about 1.6G) can be burned in DVD format or installed on a 2G USB-stick (just as I do). The download site is: ftp://diffusion.cgu.edu.tw/pub/TeXmacs user: ftp without password Best regards, chu-ching huang |

There is now a link on the vpython.org Linux download page to the new packages Brad Longo has built for Fedora Core 7, both stable and beta versions. Thanks much, Brad! Bruce Sherwood |

I just got done with the fedora 7 RPM for the beta version of vpython. I tried it out myself and it works. Let me know if anyone has any issues with it. The file for it is here: http://www4.ncsu.edu/~bjlongo Brad Longo |

Last night I made an rpm for visual-3.2.9, gtkglarea, and gtkglarea-devel. I put them on the only place I could to make them available to the public, and that is here at http://www4.ncsu.edu/~bjlongo. I have the source packages and debuginfo as well, but I haven't posted them. Let me know if you want them and I'll make them available. The rpm will not work with other linux users because your packages will have slightly different names. If someone wants the spec file all you have to do is change the names in the Requires and BuildRequires sections. If you don't know how to build an rpm, but you are willing to edit the file I can make one for you. Soon I will make an rpm for the beta version of vpython. I will let everyone know when that is available. Brad Longo |

[] > Is this option essential for vpython??? This whole problem has nothing to do with vpython, or only insofar as it uses libboost_python for building. It is a libboost_python problem. Libboost_python uses (by default) unicode, and therefore it needs to be linked together with the same flavor of python, UCS2 or UCS4, that it was built with. From the original post it seems clear that there were two pythons present on the machine, the one from SAGE which believes in UCS2, and the one from the linux distribution which believes in UCS4. The libboost_python was built against the UCS4 python, so it cannot be used with UCS2 python. In other words, if you want to build vpython with the python from SAGE, you first have to build libboost_python with the same python. After reading up on this story, I still find it incredible that the python developers consciously decided to allow python to adhere to one of two incompatible persuasions, UCS2 and UCS4, so that compiled modules (extensions) must adhere to the same persuasion as the python they were built with, or they will crash. What is worse is that you don't see from the outside which persuasion your python was built with, unless you run something like python -c 'import sys; print sys.maxunicode' or you search for UCS2 or UCS4 in symbol names in the binary executable. AFAICT, UCS2 is still the default, i.e. you get this if you don't use any --unicode configure flag. -- Martin |

I have no idea how/why your two different Python 2.5's behave differently. I do notice that the Sage download, which bundles together a large number of packages, includes numeric rather than numpy, but you seem to have numpy installed. And in any case the error message concerning Unicode. Sorry! I hope someone else has a clue. There is indeed a known bug in the autoconf machinery for creating the vpython convenience script. On the download page at vpython.org there is a suggestion to use a script like this (which you presumably figured out for yourself): cd /usr/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/visual/examples /usr/local/bin/python2.5 /usr/local/lib/python2.5/idlelib/idle.pyw Bruce Sherwood Jaap Spies wrote: > I tried to install Visual with the python version coming with SAGE: > http://www.sagemath.org/ > > > "make install" fails to make an executable vpython: > 1) there is still a ${prefix} in the file vpython > 2) IDLE points to the wrong place > > But running vpython then fails: > >> Python 2.5.1 (r251:54863, Aug 12 2007, 13:20:03) >> [GCC 4.1.2 20070502 (Red Hat 4.1.2-12)] on linux2 >> Type "copyright", "credits" or "license()" for more information. >> >> **************************************************************** >> Personal firewall software may warn about the connection IDLE >> makes to its subprocess using this computer's internal loopback >> interface. I tried to install Visual with the python version coming with SAGE: http://www.sagemath.org/ "make install" fails to make an executable vpython: 1) there is still a ${prefix} in the file vpython 2) IDLE points to the wrong place But running vpython then fails: > Python 2.5.1 (r251:54863, Aug 12 2007, 13:20:03) > [GCC 4.1.2 20070502 (Red Hat 4.1.2-12)] on linux2 > Type "copyright", "credits" or "license()" for more information. > > **************************************************************** > Personal firewall software may warn about the connection IDLE > makes to its subprocess using this computer's internal loopback > interface. How would one 'store' views so that a particular camera view be loaded at start? Obviously Center and Forward of the scene object provides direction but how does one specify an initial zoom scale? Chris |

Is there any plans to implement pick events with labels? It would be lovely to click in a label and allow that action to be available. Lovely for drill down and editing, amongst other things Chris |

This is very odd, though I think I've heard of it happening before. I don't know what causes it. The first thing to try is to uninstall Visual and then reinstall it. If that doesn't work, uninstall Visual, uninstall Python itself, then reinstall Python, and finally reinstall Visual. Though it's probably irrelevant, you need to have site-packages on the Python module search path, not site-packages/visual, and it seems to be there. Windows Media player also choked on the file so I downloaded/installed the CODECS (same site as the simulation) and all is well. -- jv > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Bruce Sherwood" <Bru...@nc...> > To: "vpusers" <vis...@li...> > Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2007 3:11 AM > Subject: [Visualpython-users] Planetary ring formation > > > >> In the contributed section of vpython.org is a link to work by Michael >> Cobb who used VPython to compute the formation of rings around Saturn >> caused by gravitational resonance with the moon Titan. Dear all, it was the missing 'boost' (configure missed it) after downloading from boost.org and a very long session I was able to 'move' libboost_python.so to /usr/lib (libboost_python-gcc41-1_34_1.so.1.34.1) and copy the boost-includes to /usr/local/include/boost/. Hitting 'make' again and 'make install' and I was able to run all the demos in /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/visual/examples without any problems. Now it's time to study vpython more in detail. Thanks! Why is this not working? Why can't __init__.py find crayola? They are in the same directory! TIA, JS |

I have downloaded the video (90MB), but when I try to play it, I get a message from something called AutoUpdate "There is no sotware update from Real to support this content" with details: content type : "ICM.FMP4" I am running WindowsXP Help, please Peter Borcherds ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bruce Sherwood" <Bru...@nc...> To: "vpusers" <vis...@li...> Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2007 3:11 AM Subject: [Visualpython-users] Planetary ring formation > In the contributed section of vpython.org is a link to work by Michael > Cobb who used VPython to compute the formation of rings around Saturn > caused by gravitational resonance with the moon Titan. I will go after boost first. Thanks. Henk |
