However, given the number of people in China, this is not totally suprising. I wouldn't be suprised if there are more of this kinda effor somewhere. But going this far takes a lot of effort and is truely respectable. We would have been much better if we knew this earlier (much ealier). There is one thing that I think we did right: openess. Let people know we are doing it and let people join us (hopefully). I'd say it is too late now for the two thing to be incorporated. This isn't the same as we did in the beginning of the project when we merged with ken_lee (thanks again to wandys). Actually, I more or less think this is normal and they scratch different itch. Our stuff can be used as online help and we have more coverage (much more actually). I think we did a greate job to do that. Of course we can make pdf version of the user manual as well but it would still be feeding a different need. One greate thing about Linux and open source is choice. Then let there be choice for Vim document translation as well. Anyway, I'd say we continue whatever we are doing and do it well. Let there be debate if needed. ps. Well, wiki is a thing meant to be open. And i make our wiki as open as possible. Anonymous edit allowed everywhere. CVS remains as the authortive committing method. 'Static' html versions also remain as the authortive translating results and can be synced automatically from cvs as usual: http://vcd.cosoft.org.cn/doc/help.html http://vcd.cosoft.org.cn/doc/usr_toc.html Wiki is for casual/anonymous contribution, to attract more ppl to get interested and hopefully join in. So that it's supposed to get updated more often than cvs. With all that said, i dont think it neccessary to sync b/w cvs and wiki. We can incorporate changes from wiki, after reviewing and polishing them, to our cvs repository [every week/month, or when we are about to make a release (beta?) ]. FYI, our wiki has since been working pretty fine. Some guy has translated 'if_perl.txt' and another guy has started to work on 'visual.txt'. Not 'small changes', huh? So we can invite them to join in as core translators (with cvs committing permisson). Regards, |

The other PM wandys has recently set up a WiKi page on http://vcd.cosoft.org.cn, which I don't really know how to use yet. The following are more question from my self to wandys: 1. Is there a way to synchronize the CVS and WiKi pages automatically? From both sides? 2. On the Wiki page, is there a way to identify who made what changes? Bear with me if they sound silly. It's just.. totally..amazingly incredible... The timestamp showed in that pdf is 2003/04/16. I checked the News section on our vimcdoc site and found that we finished the User part at 2003/05/29. Not sure whether s/he ever incorporated (some of) our works or s/he just did all the stuff all by her/himself. Took a glance at it. The translation, imho, seems more polished and feels smoother...than ours. But it's just less known than our works and i dunno when the author released his/her doc to public. Should have been much greater if we had known this earlier and worked together with him/her. So.. too late now? No? Invite him/her to join us? Any idea? Regards, -- Alecs K. |

There used to be a bunch of awk script written by the old vimdoc team, which will convert .txt to .tex files and then one can use pdftex to do the job. However, the package was outdated and won't work properly for the latest docs. I tried (hard) to write some script (perl & python) for the same purpose but works terribly. Not easy for me anyway. Of course one can use acrobat or something like that to do the job but it is not optimal. Another consideration would be to use htmldoc to convert the html version (using the black&white printable color schem). It actually works fine - I used it to generate a pdf version of TAOUP. Did more search. And now came up with this approach: First use html2ps[1] to convert html to ps, and then use ps2pdf[2] to produce the final pdf doc. This way we can have those hyperlinks in the pdf document [from the hyperlinks in the original html documents]. But the problem now is that i cannot make it work well for Chinese encoding/characters. I found some minor bugs in 'vim2html.pl', fixed them and committed to CVS.) Fixed: 1. Can not recognize 'Ctrl-]' as a keystoke (e.g. in usr_01.txt) 2.
