Hi guys. @ Newtor - Actually, A1.9.5 is up there now... the installer has changed a lot from the last ISO up to now. ----------- Just wanted to give everyone an update. The installer is shaping up quite nicely thanks to the bug reports/tickets on vlcore.vectorlinux.com I think we're mighty close to being ablet o put this thing out for public testing. The latest ISO as of today is A1.9.15 which I have just tried along with the latest installer. Installation goes as smooth as can be for me... but then again, I wrote the thing, so it may have developed a relationship with me for all we know ;) There is one un-tested area still in the installer... Importing user accounts. The code is there, but no debugging has been done on it as of yet. I hope to get that polished up by next week. Anyway, This email is about the latest ISO. I've found a couple of hickups in the ISO itself. 1) The resulting installed system enters a endless configure/reboot loop 2) The xinitrc included in the skel points to an xfce session, which retults in kdm just looping around because it can't find it 3) KDE freezes on startup on my VBox VM. 4) The os-prober package is missing from the resulting installation. we need it there for grub configuration. @ Vector & @ Uelsk8s I have added my .gtkrc config files to the svn dep dir http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/trac/vinstall/browser/deps Put these on the initrd in /root/ it makes the installer look a lot better @ lower resolutions. Again, everybody thanks for the bug reports. If you have not yet signed up, please do so @ http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/trac/vinstall |

Hello, Using VMWare 5.x, I've just tested the A1.9.14 iso install via GUI. Overall impressions of the installer is that it is looking much nicer - great job. However, I had a couple hiccups along the way. 1) LILO did not (could not) install and grub remains grayed out, and 2) I was unable to complete the installation due to an unknown issue. The unknown issue was that at the end of the GUI installation is asks which 'services' I'd like to enable. I picked some extras besides the default, and moved on. I then moved to the 'completed installation and restart' step; I clicked 'reboot' button and received an error message to the effect that 'reboot is not yet ready' (or some such thing). I tried moving back a couple steps to move forward again but the 'reboot' button remained (rather than switching back to a 'next' button), and I could no longer move forward in the steps because the 'reboot' button was still activated (IOW, if I clicked the button I received the same reboot error message I mentioned above). I went ahead and used the JWM(?) reboot option, and booted back to cd but to the TUI installer this time to finish installing LILO. I installed lilo successfully. However, I chose bootsplash-high and ended up with a very standard lilo (i.e. standard console text; white-on-black - no biggie). After finishing installing lilo I rebooted again and came to the ncurses 'finishing configuration' step of the installer. I went through these questions - some were redundant with the GUI installer - and finished/rebooted. It then rebooted back to the 'finishing configuration' steps again. Again, I answered the same questions and rebooted. Same - back to 'finishing configuration' questions. This is where I left off. I also noticed in the GUI installer there is an instance were 'password' is misspelled - 'passwrord'. I believe is when entering the user account password, but may have been for the root password. I'll try installing again via TUI later on, but thought I'd pass this along now. Cheers, newt P.S. I apologize if this is not the appropriate protocol for submitting bugs/comments for devel/alpha releases. I'm new to this 'newslist' and 'alpha-testing' thing. If I should proceed differently, please inform me of the correct protocol. Thanks again! Monday, July 6, 2009, 3:06:16 AM, you wrote: RL> I have uploaded a new iso for testing. I have uploaded a new iso for testing. I think it is complete enough for community testing. This includes all the changes M0E wanted as to grub and a few others. I would like a few others to try this before i do a general alpha release if possible. the iso is here: ftp://ftp-osl.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/Uelsk8s/test/VL6.0-SOHO-A1.9.14.iso If you find any problems that would prevent a community test please report with ideas to fix. The import user button was grayed out. I had users from a previous STD installation, it did not prompt of importing any, and since the button was grayed out I could not manually import. Also noticed that the installed user section seems to show only the upper half. As far down as the top half of the import user button could be seen. Clicking on the icon box to select a user icon, that looked well, but when I finally got to KDM, nobody had any icons. I was able to put user icons using KDE's system configuration, though. The user icons, by default, are turned on in the kdmconfig, I did not see if it the icon path was set though. Time zone does not get set as configured by user in installer. Looking in /etc/localtime file, it reads that "time zone needs to be set -- see zic manual". Run vasm, setup from there, then /etc/localtime shows the timezone as setup from vasm. On Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 3:17 AM, Masta MCF <mas...@gm...> wrote: > Update. I have fixed the cdrom source detection problem. Grabbed iso version 1.9.13 in the test dir, but that one still has old grub and there is no grub in the iso itself... so I need that updated. Trying to figure out the passwords issue now. |

I will address the cdrom issue if I can get an iso with the latest installer binary in it. I just noticed the root password issue yesterday I will look into it On Jul 2, 2009 1:36 AM, "Robert Lange" <vec...@ya...> wrote: OK I for one am in agreement if the auto partition scheme isn't just about perfect lets sideline it way to risky. To get more testing beyond our little circle here there are two critical things that need fixing in the installer. The first being that the installer fails most of the time to read the package files from the cd media that it was booted from. It will install fine from an iso image on a hd partition but thats a bit much to expect from a casual tester. The other is that both root and user passwords are not being saved during installation. One can log in as root and enter with no password, as user the entered password never works. I think some more time needs to be spent on those two areas then we can expand our horizons with a larger testing group. Just my humble opinion. Hi all Here is the latest news to the installer. I have decided to drop the automatic partitioning option. I know everyone was getting pumped up about it, but I feel there are too many risks involved, and we simply may not be able to support all the complaints about how the installer borked somebody's hard drives and ended up not installing after all. The main reason behind this is that my test results are a hit and miss. It would work 2/3 times, and then I'd end up with some weird results. I do believe the embedded gparted utility will suffice for now for custimized partitioning. I will keep the code in there, just in case we want to revive it in the future. ANOTHER CHANGE I have unleashed grub as a bootloader option. This one is kind of tricky... although, a lot easier to setup than lilo is IMO. The iffy part is that it is grub2, I couldn't get any support for old grub @ #grub in freenode, so I thought grub2 would just as good as any. I have tested in VM and grub does work for me... so it is time for you guys to start testing I managed to get the installed system to boot and everything. I'd like to get you guys to weigh in on these decissions, good/bad/suggestions... shoot. @ Uelsk8s I need a new ISO with the following things in it. + Include the packages in http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/svn/vinstall/deps in the ISO + Include the new grub2 package in the initrd (i need the grub command available during installation) + I noticed on first boot, there is no default xsession pre-selected. So if there is no xterm, x fails... we need to either pre-select something and/or add xterm so that the failsafe session starts up. That's all I got for now... I await new iso and bug reports. |

Hi Rodrigo A couple of things - not sure if they're intentional or not... libgphoto2 is included, but no gphoto2? Same with xine - xine-lib is in the list, but no xine-front-end? Also, mplayer-plugins are listed, but not mplayer. If my past experience is anything to go by, the plugins don't work unless mplayer itself is available.
