Hi guys, I have been working on the SOHO package list, getting the smallest is our priority now. I installed soho a3, removed packages from a list made by nightflier (tyvm) and then I did some clean up by myself. The goal is to get one app per task, making kde apps a priority. Here is the output of ls /var/log/packages: CImg-1.2.9-i586-1vl60 ImageMagick-6.4.1_10-i586-1vl60 MPlayer-1.0rc2-i586-11gsb PyQt-4.4.4-i586-2vl60 QScintilla-2.3.2-i586-2vl60 SDL_Pango-0.1.2-i586-1vl60 I have focused a lot on this department in the new istaller. The speedy branch con configure both. I have currently disabled the grub option because it needs more debugging/testing. Also need to find out if we want to go to grub2 or legacy grub. This is wats stopping me from grub atm, because the syntax of the menu.lst has changed. But I do feel much more confident on this installer On Jun 10, 2009 11:29 AM, "kc1di-qrp" <kc1...@ro...> wrote: uel archuletta wrote: > We need to set some clear goals for this SOHO release! > > from my perspecti... > <mailto:m0...@gm...>> wrote: > > Installer Update: > I think I have fixed the issue ... > <mailto:Vec...@li...> > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/vectorlinux-devel > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Crystal Reports... I Think a Clear goal is vital. With that said I believe we should also consider changing the boot loader to Grub at this time. I'm getting more and more requests for grub. It seems to be the standard for most distros now and most newbies are better acquainted with it.. not that lilo is in any way inferior. If we keep Lilo we should develop an easy to use GUI configtool for it that is very straight forward. Just my two cent's worth. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Crystal Reports - ... |

I for one think we should not waste time fixing something destined to be trashed. With that in mind, I think we ought to concentrate on developing a new release based on new tools, since slack has upgraded to 64b. It might take a bit longer, but it is the best way to go IMO. I'd hate to think of the instability that will be reflected if we put out a 1/2 SOHO with text-only installer right after a STD with GUI installer, which is why I have to agree with Uel. It is imperative that we have one goal in mind, and that it is very defined. Whatever that goal may be. |

We need to set some clear goals for this SOHO release! from my perspective we have 2 options: 1) Use the old installers This will allow us to get SOHO out soon and we will be able to use the test ISO i made to build upon. 2) Use new installers This will significantly extend the release date of this SOHO. It will allow us to have better installers with more options. the text based installer will have to be rewritten to handle the new format of the ISO. Lets figure this part out ASAP so we know where to focus our manpower. Installer Update: I think I have fixed the issue with the bootloader. I'm linking you all to the full log output of the installer so you guys can see what the problems with the iso are so far. And also linking to the resulting lilo.conf just for giggles LOG: http://nopaste.com/p/arnJAPcX0 Lilo.conf: http://nopaste.com/p/aPlUAuS51 We are so close to testing stage.! |

That's great... I could use some help. Unfortunately, vasmcc does not have such a bug list. The project has kind of stalled so I could have time to get the installer going. My thought was to eventually move vasmcc to pygtk rather than gambas. The reasoning behind this is that there are other python programmers in the vl community. Moving it to python might just encourage them to contribute a module here or there. And also gambas has a never ending list of bugs in their gtk component. I just started with python and pygtk about a week ago, so this is way down the kline for me. I would suggest you dig right into the installer code. I have heavily commented most important functions. The speedy branch is the latest and greatest. iVL is the old one that shipped w/ 6.0 std. The structure has completely changed... so I started developing the speedy branch instead Btw guys.... new gambas is out with yet more bugfixes for gb.gtk. can we get a package? Just to keep everyone in the loop... We have made a huge jump, and are about to make another one in the installer department. I've narrowed down so far to major showstoppers for the latest installer... you can find these listed here http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/trac/vinstall/query?group=status&milestone=vinstall-ng-1.1+(codename+'speedy') Once rbistolfi gets the source updated there, I hope to be committing code directly there rather than google code. Although, a chron job to back-up to google maybe once a day wouldn't hurt... but that's a whole nother subject. At any rate, this is where the installer stands. As you can see in the first bug entry, is where I need help. Uel, Vec... we need to figure out what to do about kernels... do we just copy the one from the running system on to the target ? or just install the one provided in the iso as kernel-version-i586-1vl60.tlz? This is the most critical issue at the moment. Stay tuned for more |

If you do that... you should consider shipping w/ text-only installer since the old gui is quite buggy and has not/will not be debugged. I tired your a0.1 iso last night.... couldn't get kde to start. The iso I tested is at ftp://ftp-osl.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/Uelsk8s/test/VL6.0-SOHO-A0.1.iso ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Crystal Reports - New Free Runtime and 30 Day Trial > Check out the new simplified licensing opti... > > _______________________________________________ > Vectorlinux-devel mailing list > Vectorlinux-... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Crystal Reports - New Free Runtime and 30 Day Trial Check out the new simplified licensing option that enables unlimited royalty-free distribution of the report engine for externally facing server and web deployment. http://p.sf.net/sfu/businessobjects _______________________________________________ Vectorlinux-devel mailing list Vec...@li... https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/vectorlinux-devel |

I have a test ISO up built on a higher compressed 6.0 light that includes Vecs kde4 test packages. There seems to be some leftover kdm cruft in one of the bulks causing poblems but otherwise it works alright. The main reason for this ISO was to see what we can fit in 700mb so we should install it and generate some pig lists and play with what can be removed. If someone that has the link to the ISO can post it it will be appreciated. IMO we should wait to switch to xz and the newest installer after this SOHO release. I think they will only add more work/time at this point. The reason I'm begging for trac is because the installer will need serious testing/debugging... my time keeps getting cut shorter and shorter as I struggle to keep my job / find a new one, so organization is key to make the most out of my time On Jun 8, 2009 12:09 PM, "Rodrigo Bistolfi" <rbi...@gm...> wrote: Woha nice to see you again easuter, welcome back :) And Sriram is here too... we are putting a Dream Team together :D > Any way we can get this on trac (hint : rbistolfi) so that we can organize > better and keep good... If important information is posted here and worth to keep, we can add it to the wiki. I have been trying to log our work in the wiki. I know it looks like time lost, but if we can document our work, people will be able to pick it up in the future if we get busy IRL or something, or we may want to delegate some part of our work to new collaborators.
